Shalamar are a joy. I loved this song, with this lead vocalist. Of course, they went on to do great songs with Howard Hewett but this and Right In The Socket are still my favourite Shalamar songs.
Top Class! wow I'm playing guitar on this along with Leon SylversIII on rikenbauker bass!I later I went with motown and Ozone there was a ballad Stay Close To Love I co wrote with Leon and Kevin Spencer on This lp
I have to agree with @stilettogroove : I like Shalamar as most of the people commneting here, but it's got to be said : Leave the past in the past ! I even think that other major funk group of the old days (such as Earth,Wind & Fire, Kool and the Gang, Chic's Nile Rodgers, Imagination's Leee John...etc...and others...) should have stopped touring since the nineties; that was it, it was over already in the nineties for these guys; it's long ago that it was time for'em to stop touring(my opinion)
@zdzbzrz But that's like saying artists have to stop working after the peak of their success. That's weird. For instance real musicians love to be on stage and perform regardless of their success and age. An artist can not be on top of the world during his whole career. But of course i get your point. It's just a little romantic. ;) You don't want to destroy the picture in your mind and sometimes i feel as well.
I use to love this song...LowKey still do..I think all parties involved had their own contributions to the Group...Everyone was a Major Force!!! It would be Nice to see a Reunion with all parties involved!!! But Man did I have a crush on Jeffrey Daniels!! Geesh!! Lol!!!
This brings back great memories. I am the keyboard player in this video. I havent seen this in 30 yrs. wow! Some good times. Cheers to Gerald, Howard, Jody, Jeffrey. Remember, i was the salt in "salt and pepper". lol
Really? Is that you jamming the Rhodes on the left? Sounds hot! I wish songs like this could be made today. And with all the Rhodes emulation equipment (Nord) and the new Rhodes product, why not?
@JimmBailey Why do you need a reunion major FAIL? As a Watley fan the last thing i wish for is for a reunion, SHE IS FIIIIERCE, the dudes not so much. Shall we say Leave the past in the past?
@stilettogroove: I hear you. However, since this song AND the band SHALAMAR is indeed "the past," that's largely the reason I posted my comment here and not on Jody's page. And since the other dudes are still around, that's largely a reason for a reunion.
Yes, Jody is clearly fierce, but so is Howard Hewett! Shalamar would not be great without the combined vocals of both Jody, Howard, and Jeffrey Daniels.
@steeljake52 I saw a documentary on this group yesterday(TV ONE) and there was alot of in house bickering in this group the lead singer thought he was more important than the rest of the group and wanted more money from the record company and never got it.
Love Shalamar. My childhood is connected to them and why I went into music. I made it in the biz and groups like Shalamar inspired me to do so. Great group and only wish groups didnt all eventually break up. I wish one day groups will realize its the business tht breaks them up, not the love they have for each other. Before the fame and money groups are close and have love for one another. Then the fame/money cmes. Thats why groups break up. I MISS SHALAMAR! Miss you Jeffery/Jody/Howard!L.G.N.M
Thanks for your positive comments . I know I can speak for Howard ; when , I say none of Shalamar's members want support from people who leave vulgar and offensive messages associated with our music . PS. The only record to sell more than this one was " Second Time Around " . The most important member ever was Jody Watley . Whether , I was the lead vocalist or Howard . There's no debating that .
Shalamar were a fantastic group. A majority of the time when you listen to the radio all they seem to play is their slightly later stuff like There It Is, A Night To Remember etc. They are great records but for me this record is probably their best.

The problem with X-crement Factor is their are no musicians anymore. All this manufactured crap is just pretty boys and gurls singing (ish) and prancing around to session musicians. I hate the "music" today. Most of it is talentless crap! No substance, just a few notes and repeated filthy lyrics. GARBAGE. Not much of anything decent after 1993!!!! The young artist's today should sit down and LISTEN to the musicians from the 70s--mid 90s----they were (and still are) REAL MUSICIANS.
@lkaa2 I agree with you to some extent that music today is not great and uninspiring but to say there was no good music after 93 i have to question..what about groups like Lo-key,Portrait,Vanessa Williams brought out a brilliant album in 95 Jodeci and many more which came out of the swing beat era.ie Blackstreet(Teddy Riley).Oh those days from the late 70's to mid 90's were the best for music..If you want good music with live instruments go to a good praise and worship church....
and this is why i dont like unsung, why they didnt elaborate on gerald on the show, i think it would have been more interesting than feauturing mikki free its a shame that shalamr was just a made up studio group but without howard the group would not have been that great jody was on top for a minute i think she was the hardest worker out the group you can tell-says uzipolo-king of decatur
I'm still alive guys . I wasn't that much older (smile) . For the record . Shalamar's earnings were used to bankroll Solar record's early endeavors. I felt we should have a profit sharing agreement . The company disagreed . I left . Was labeled , hard to handle . See me now on DTOWN / Universal Records . Thanks for the interest . Live video on Utube Make That Move 48K
Glad to know it. I was in love with this record, and used to sing along with your vocals all day long and pretend that I was the lead singer in the group. This song was a hit with your vocals and no on can take that away. This recrod always sounds good to me!
@peabo12 Well, I was just thinking ... maybe it is not the music. Maybe It is us who have changed. Can we change back, or rather change again, to respect one another in our public and private aremas? Maybe then, our music will reflect kindness, consideration, thoughtfulness, and other positive attributes that make living life possible.
yes. today's DJ's favor rhythmic music, repeating endlessly for minutes, the original beauty of classic songs like this one is wasted. These should be treasures we'd never forget.
oh wow really love this song why arent todays stupid DJ's keeping these songs alive???? disgusting how they are consigning these great songs into oblivion thank God for YOu Tune!!! who will be the big DJ to revive this fab music in New York city big club lets do it!!!!
Man, we think of all the great producers during this era of music but Leon Sylvers was a true genius!! Watch the TV One Unsung episode about Shalamar. It's sad that when groups are on the cusp of true greatness, they fold!
This is amazin' footage...old stuff like this gives me the chills! I love it...dat's crazy dat U rarely heard from Jeffrey Daniel, but the group was originally built around him!!!
Gerald "Punchy" Brown, was an incredible singer and dancer! Oh what could have been! Gerald, Terry, and Robert were polished and professional entertainers in Cincy. Shalamar, with the basic dance steps and cheap outfits, didn't fit Gerald's style. He was a classy performer. Cornelius and Griffey wanted a kid who would do what he was told. Enter Howard H.
jodie aint no damn lesbian she suppose to have a child with howard and she was married to andre simone but she have a sister called midori thats a porn star i never heard of jodie being lesbian she could be i dont know
i looked and looked for the lead singer of this song on soul train in the mid and late 70's(about 50 episodes) and i dont se him no where what season was he in,,but this song is great i really like this song for real uzipolo-king of decatur
He was replaced by Howard Hewitt -I used to have the album and there was a song on it called "Cindy" and that brother tore it up, but I do not know his name , or why he left the group??
gerald brown is the third guy thats my uncle from cincinnatti he left the group because they had hit songs and was not getting paid .....and uncle gerald had a family to take care of and couldn't keep coming home empty handed !!!
Man bigink-thanks for the info-I was such a fan of your uncle-I do not think that Howard Hewett was better than him with Shalamar -he changed the sound-Gerald had a powerful lead pressence-awesome talent-the world missed out!!by the way, my name is Gerald too!!-no wonder he was so good...lol thanks bigink and tell Gerald-he still has 1 fan out here that appreciated his talent!
lol definately i will let him know ....he sang a few jingles , sung for a skyline chili comercial (ohio based food chain) and still dables in music , im not up to speed on his latest projects but when i get with him and find out i will post
technically yes ....but in the music biz when you cut a record. the record company usually gives you a small advance toward estimated royalties. the money depends on how well they think you will sell. if you flop you will owe .. if you sell great !!! "the catch is" when its time to settle up.. they will deduct your promotional cost, money spent on tours limo's hotels costumes etc.. from your royalties ! so you can have a hit and still only break even ,or owe need a second album to get ahead !
Yes the keyword is "Advance"=Loan...This happend to Leaders of The New School and in the end they owed Elektra millions as the story goes. Artist should all own their music if possible. MJ got over on the Beatles...lol.
your absolutely right !!!! but now a days u dont even need a label, the internet got the music game by the balls.... all you need now is promotion money !!! and sell your music online
Man that other brother can sing and dance his ass off, not Jeffrey Daniels, we already know he can dance, Im talking about the other guy! he was before Howard Hewitt?
Oh yes! I have no complaints about either member of Shalamar, that brother Gerald Brown brung an energy of his own to the group that was unique, but Howard Hewitt's vocals took em to even higher hieghts, and oh! Don Cornelious introduced singer O'Bryan on Soul Train back in the day, a few of his hit songs were, You & I ..LOVELITE..Gigalo, look em up, dude was bad man! Peace!
I was there the first night they opened the MCI Center. Wizards vs Sonics. First tickets I bought with my own money. Even though I was 100% against the name change I went anyway to show my support. I was excited about starting a new chapter and moving on. Well that excitement lasted only until about the 3rd period when I decided that I was not feeling the new uniforms or the new building. In fact I came to the realization that I HATED both. So I left early in the 4th period.
My family is from Washington DC, Oxon Hill and Alexandria on my fathers side and New York City on my mothers side.
I HATE the Wizards and the Verizon Center.
AS far as I am concerned the Capital Centre and The Bullets still exist. I have plenty of games on videotape and watch them all the time. Jordan, Magic and Bird are not retired in my world. They are all still playing.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh! To be 1978, 18 years old and dancing in the club again! It seems like it was only last month. Has it really been 30 years???????? Pure disco here, and I LOVE IT!!! Thinking about the pure joy of the era and this great song being a part of it brings me to tears. Thanks so much dijssel5 for taking me back to a happy place.
I love this group. But I was a kid in the 70's. So who was the original? Who owned the group? I always thought Howard H. was the the brians behind the group. So Jody was an original! Wow! Love her!
Jody Watley & Jeffrey Daniels were Soul Train dancers recruited by the head of Solar Records in 1977. They had two other lead singers before Howawrd was recruited in 1979 Jody and Jeffrey left in 1983 during a UK tour and were replaced by Delissa Davis and Mikki Free. Howard left in 1986 and was replaced by Sydney Justin a former football player. I was 8 when this song came out and I used to love this song. Jody is working on her autobiography and we'll finally know why she left the group.
One of lifes classic groups. Saw them live and they didnt do this one! My favourite as well - danced to it when it first came out and would still dance to it now
probably because this is gerald brown and not howard hewett - i bet he was pissed when howard replaced him...they wouldnt have so many hits without him and howard wouldnt have so many solo ones without shalamar
Nope...Howard was actually not an original member of Shalamar. I think this guy's name is Gerald Brown. I think they went through a couple of different male lead singers before the wonderful Howard Hewitt came along. I actually remember seeing them perform this song on American Bandstand....lol.
Howard came on immediately following Gerald's departure...in some "live" performances, Howard had to lip sync to Gerald's vocals on this song. Then later, listeners heard a completely different voice when Howard was finally recorded on subsequent songs. I'll bet people were mad confused then...lol. Of course he hated that, but it was exposure. I used to have a performance of when Howard synced these vocals, but I don't remember which show it was.
That's what I wasn't quite sure about! Maybe Howard was there "singing" Gerald's part or maybe it was Gerald. I was really young, but I just remember them being on AB.
Howard was a local singer in LA and Jody and Jeffrey knew about him. When Gerald decided to leave the group, he got a call from the Solar Records and they asked him to audition, and after he sung Peabo Bryson's Feel the Fire, they gave him 500 dollars and sent him to New Jersey for a taping of a show where he lip-synched Take That To The Bank. Howard's debut was on their 1980 album Fun and single Second Time Around.
Why did Gerald leave? What happened to him? also what happened between Jody and Howard's relationship? Still, just fab! Thanks for your info, and thanks for sharing!
I'm not sure, but I think it had to do with the age differences between him and the group. I never knew Jody and Howard had an relationship. Jody is working on her autobiography so we'll finally find out what happened with the group. Jet Magazine did a where-are-they-know article about them and when asked would they reunite, Jody said she wouldn't be into it. Howard on the other hand wants a reunion even though, he, Jeffrey perform with the former Presient of ther label's daughter in Jody's spot
Thanks, I appreciate you enlightening me. I heard that story but no one knows what really happened to Gerald. As for Jody and Howard what I meant was a falling out as far as a working relationship. I would love to read her autobiography. Howard seemed to get a lot of the spot light but her vocals are what I remember most about the groups sound. I like em' all. I saw that reunion. And it wasn't the same without Jody's vocals.
Sure. Jody has said that she left because the label wouldn't allow her to be write and sing as much as she liked too. Her voice made the group special. They did reunite in 1996 when Babyface asked them to sing on his rendition of This Is for The Lover In You and though it was a good remake, the video should have featured them more instead of LL though he rapped on the song. Jody could have been the leading lady especially since it was her song.
Exactly what happened to Gerald Brown? It took me 30 years just to find out he LEFT the group. Why did he leave? Is he still alive? I thought he had a great voice. Very unique and masculine.
I'm not sure if he's alive. I heard that he was older then Jody and Jeffrey and the age difference was the conflict between them. You're right about his voice. I'm suprised that Solar didn't sign him as a solo artist. He would have blown up and the label would have made more money. Come to think of it, Solar hardly had any male solo artists.
Man, the tight instrumentals, just listen to that! Kill anything out there now... They were probably just session guys too! what are they doing now? Probably sampling some clip on Xbox in their bedroom or some dippy shit like that!
Scary looking at this 30 YEARS on, looks like old pathe news reel now. I remember the dynamite beat, funky clothes, smoky atmospheric lights, energy, sweat and smell of Soft 'n' Free wet look hair products in the soul brothers and sisters hair like it was only last week at my local disco. Time is a bitch!
disco music total!!!!!!

I used to love this song. I was 8 years old when this song came out, and I have loved them ever since. The 60's, 70's
and 80's had the best music, fun and good to grow up as
a happy 80's kid. Real music and entertainers by far from
today's crap!

Jody must have been right out of the SOUL TRAIN studio on this 1978. She stop dancing on the show in 77 did`nt she?

Disco died and rap is still alive?!! NOT FAIR. And that coming from someone whos prolly spent 90% of lifetime record money on hip-hop.

Hip-hop has died as well. What passes for Hip-Hop today is mostly pure junk.
peabo12 2 years ago 5
@peabo12 Well, I was just thinking ... maybe it is not the music. Maybe It is us who have changed. Can we change back, or rather change again, to respect one another in our public and private aremas? Maybe then, our music will reflect kindness, consideration, thoughtfulness, and other positive attributes that make living life possible.

bjlopez1130 2 years ago
Gerald "Punchy" Brown, was an incredible singer and dancer! Oh what could have been! Gerald, Terry, and Robert were polished and professional entertainers in Cincy. Shalamar, with the basic dance steps and cheap outfits, didn't fit Gerald's style. He was a classy performer. Cornelius and Griffey wanted a kid who would do what he was told. Enter Howard H.

He actually left the group for a number of reasons...some I probably have to keep to myself.
toonesb 2 years ago
So he got no royalties?
rockjohnson80 2 years ago
technically yes ....but in the music biz when you cut a record. the record company usually gives you a small advance toward estimated royalties. the money depends on how well they think you will sell. if you flop you will owe .. if you sell great !!! "the catch is" when its time to settle up.. they will deduct your promotional cost, money spent on tours limo's hotels costumes etc.. from your royalties ! so you can have a hit and still only break even ,or owe need a second album to get ahead !
bigink190 2 years ago
Yes the keyword is "Advance"=Loan...This happend to Leaders of The New School and in the end they owed Elektra millions as the story goes. Artist should all own their music if possible. MJ got over on the Beatles...lol.
rockjohnson80 2 years ago
your absolutely right !!!! but now a days u dont even need a label, the internet got the music game by the balls.... all you need now is promotion money !!! and sell your music online
bigink190 2 years ago
did who get royalties?

Man that other brother can sing and dance his ass off, not Jeffrey Daniels, we already know he can dance, Im talking about the other guy! he was before Howard Hewitt?
XConYoungBlood 3 years ago
Yes, the guy before Howard Hewett was named Gerald Brown. He was there for a short time in the beginning.

He was a bad brother man! I missed him, wow! the music had so much energy in thos days didnt it? I feel cheated now with this music today brother!
XConYoungBlood 2 years ago
Also..Don't Bro.Gerald Brown look like O'Bryan?
XConYoungBlood 2 years ago
Not sure who O'Bryan is..but the up tempo songs were hot back then, yes.
Howard is a very talented vocalist.
Download the Shalamar songs on "The 12" Collection" album on iTunes.
Gotta love the Fender Rhodes in this song.
But you have to admit, Jody is the one....Jody Hotley!
Niner6 2 years ago

I love this group. But I was a kid in the 70's. So who was the original? Who owned the group? I always thought Howard H. was the the brians behind the group. So Jody was an original! Wow! Love her!
seelois 3 years ago
Jody Watley & Jeffrey Daniels were Soul Train dancers recruited by the head of Solar Records in 1977. They had two other lead singers before Howawrd was recruited in 1979 Jody and Jeffrey left in 1983 during a UK tour and were replaced by Delissa Davis and Mikki Free. Howard left in 1986 and was replaced by Sydney Justin a former football player. I was 8 when this song came out and I used to love this song. Jody is working on her autobiography and we'll finally know why she left the group.

Ey, I don't see Howard Hewitt in here. Was he not a member during the early days?
themightycelestial 3 years ago
Nope...Howard was actually not an original member of Shalamar. I think this guy's name is Gerald Brown. I think they went through a couple of different male lead singers before the wonderful Howard Hewitt came along. I actually remember seeing them perform this song on American Bandstand....lol.
tisha812 3 years ago 3
So cool. Which lineup up did you catch on AB?
Howard came on immediately following Gerald's departure...in some "live" performances, Howard had to lip sync to Gerald's vocals on this song. Then later, listeners heard a completely different voice when Howard was finally recorded on subsequent songs. I'll bet people were mad confused then...lol. Of course he hated that, but it was exposure. I used to have a performance of when Howard synced these vocals, but I don't remember which show it was.
raylo76 3 years ago
That's what I wasn't quite sure about! Maybe Howard was there "singing" Gerald's part or maybe it was Gerald. I was really young, but I just remember them being on AB.
tisha812 3 years ago
Alot of people don't know but jody watley and jeffrey daniels were discovered on soul train as dancers. I'm not sure about howard.
darkgreen0311 3 years ago 2
Howard was a local singer in LA and Jody and Jeffrey knew about him. When Gerald decided to leave the group, he got a call from the Solar Records and they asked him to audition, and after he sung Peabo Bryson's Feel the Fire, they gave him 500 dollars and sent him to New Jersey for a taping of a show where he lip-synched Take That To The Bank. Howard's debut was on their 1980 album Fun and single Second Time Around.
MUSICENCYLOPEDIA 3 years ago
Why did Gerald leave? What happened to him? also what happened between Jody and Howard's relationship? Still, just fab! Thanks for your info, and thanks for sharing!
seelois 3 years ago
I'm not sure, but I think it had to do with the age differences between him and the group. I never knew Jody and Howard had an relationship. Jody is working on her autobiography so we'll finally find out what happened with the group. Jet Magazine did a where-are-they-know article about them and when asked would they reunite, Jody said she wouldn't be into it. Howard on the other hand wants a reunion even though, he, Jeffrey perform with the former Presient of ther label's daughter in Jody's spot
MUSICENCYLOPEDIA 3 years ago
Thanks, I appreciate you enlightening me. I heard that story but no one knows what really happened to Gerald. As for Jody and Howard what I meant was a falling out as far as a working relationship. I would love to read her autobiography. Howard seemed to get a lot of the spot light but her vocals are what I remember most about the groups sound. I like em' all. I saw that reunion. And it wasn't the same without Jody's vocals.
seelois 3 years ago
MUSICENCYLOPEDIA 3 years ago
Exactly what happened to Gerald Brown? It took me 30 years just to find out he LEFT the group. Why did he leave? Is he still alive? I thought he had a great voice. Very unique and masculine.
OlaDaylax 3 years ago
I'm not sure if he's alive. I heard that he was older then Jody and Jeffrey and the age difference was the conflict between them. You're right about his voice. I'm suprised that Solar didn't sign him as a solo artist. He would have blown up and the label would have made more money. Come to think of it, Solar hardly had any male solo artists.
