  • this pretty good you guys but i mostly like the beat vids really gud

  • Comment removed

  • I would have liked her more that she said HUMAN instead of MAN XD;;; men don't represent all humans ._. and I thought that she meant it as in ... either she liked a girl or she liked a gay guy ... but it had nothign to do with her orientation, oops ^^;

But the song's good :D Utada Hikaru is a great singer!

  • Actually, she sang it for her husband. She thought that, if she was a man, she could understand him better. The video is an allegory, don't take it straight : ) The song itself has nothing to do with sci-fi.

  • @Kashiradesu O.O ... OOOOOOH!!! Makes so much sense now!!! It's that someone told me that she wanted to be a man because she was an android and wanted to understand her lover better ... but then it didn't explain why she said man instead of human ... and why she couldn't understand him ... but now I understand, thank you XD!!!

  • wow this is the only song of her's i have heard since KH!

  • she has many more songs out besides this, even some of her albums have made it to the US...oddly enough I found one at Wal Mart which seemed kinda random to me haha : /

  • @ItJustT HA! lol

  • i love this song and music video!!!!

  • the red eyes look like they would bleed^^

  • Everytime the camera shows her face at 3:50

I always think she's gonna slap him...

    xDD

  • Yeah Like the Song

  • also its easier for women to connect to people with their emotions than it is for men. hince "you really want to tell me something, but you cant"

  • This song is about utada and her ex, while they where together they had many arguments about really stupid things and she just couldnt understand why they would even fight. considering they are of different genders she felt maybe if she was a man she would understand but to no avail. they later settled upon a divorce.

  • what does she mean by that is she making a statement to her ex

  • best fcking song ever!!! utada is hands down the best!!!!!

  • Amazing,

better than any other cg video

  • that such a cool mv did it come out in the states?

  • i oddly like this song

  • you're not the only one lol

  • Same here!

  • Ahead of her time.

  • o.o.... that was freakin weird.

  • I had no ideo she had a video for this song and I'm a huge fan *O*

  • i love her

  • haha, I remember how the first time I saw the video when I was younger, it creeped me out sooo bad. It scared me. I still think it's kind of weird but I understand it now.

  • She wants to be a man so she can understand her lover better and so they both can communicate better. Jeez people, seriously?

  • Don't forget you are on Utube and the average IQ dips about 30-40 points so everything has to be spelled out in big letters or people will not understand.

  • you're right XD

  • awsome music video

  • shes nervous when she talks to him and wishes she was a man so she could speak freely and vice versa

  • wrong.

Women are treated properly in Japan. I live here, although im not Japanese, i can assure you that women are not treated un-fair. They can work anywhere, and can be extremely successful as well.

  • a week ago? hmm how could it be different from a week ago.

Women are very successful in Japan, and its been for longer than a week

  • i didnt say that it changed a week ago i said i learned that a week ago O.o and geez it was wat i learned its not like im saying that she died a week ago so dont get all offensive i just put in what i learned dont have a heart attack

  • well if you learned that a week ago, you'd think that you'd learn about the current state of women. And where the heck would you even learn that! Its complete garbage.

    Maybe think before you write.

  • Actually Cort, this song is about differences in communication styles. It's not always different between men and women, but sometimes it is.

  • the video scares me a bit haha but the songs ok

  • Kind of reminds me of Björk's song "Love is all around" - both songs are really great :3

  • Yeah, when I first saw this video I was immediately reminded of Björk, in a good way.

  • I like this song. I want to be a man...for real though. I have totally different reasons to want to be a man than her's. Utada wants to understand men (maybe a man that she is with) better and she believes she has to be a man in order to do that.

  • a man here does not mean a male but a human being... errrrrrrr u people are funny

  • Errrr, yes it does. I don't think you understand what you are talking about at all. By saying "You make me want to be a man", she is saying she wants to have the freedoms men do, to be free of typical female restraints. Being that she comes from Japan, that statement is especially powerful since the gender dynamic is terribly off balance. So, for the feelings she has, she can'st express them, and therefore says "You make me want to be a man" so she can be free to say them...

  • huh? you prob overread the song.

the video looks pretty postmodern to me. the sense of being in a post-industrial setting might imply that she is just a mechanic being?

and for a fact, utada did not grow up in japan.

  • And I think you under read the song.

One does not have to grow up in Japan to learn those values from a parent. Look at all the immigrants in other countries still carrying traditions and ideals of behavior.

I really don't think you understand this at all. Just because you can't see past the obvious doesn't mean there isn't anything below the surface. Try to remember that. And not to laugh at others because they can.

  • isnt the image of an android too metaphorical in such use?

so women are deemed as somewhat robots in japanese culture in utada's perception?

  • "We didn't need to say much to communicate

Now it's different; 99% is misinterpreted"

So you're telling me she lost her manliness and wants it back again? O_o

I don't think your theory flies...

  • That's not what I said at all. It has nothing to do with "manliness" and everything to do with the freedom men have to say what they think and do what they want to do...it has nothing to do with being an ACTUAL man. Gender is irrelevant in and of itself. It's about their freedoms and the things she wants to say to the guy she wrote this about, her ex husband.

  • There's no oppressor here >.> there's no bad guy, she's only trying to say she wishes she was a man so she could be able to speak in a way that -her- man could actually understand. She wants to learn "Man speak" if you will...

  • Errm, I think you misunderstand what I say. And as far as I've heard, this song was written about her ex husband who did all sorts of stuff she really could not say anything about and who she suffered in silence for out of "love" and just probably being a woman in Japan. Her husband WAS Japanese and so, even if she wasn't raised there, she lived there for a time with him. I don't know what to tell everyone other than the social climate between men and women in Japan is awfully different.

  • I'm sure everyone, when dealing with someone of the opposite sex who they love, has run into a problem of not being able to say something because you know it will anger or hurt them. "I really want to tell you something, but I can't" I do however think it is very important to take culture into consideration too, don't leave it out. Everyone seems to be doing just that though.

  • oh i see what your saying, is that why the MV has robots and junk?

  • Like I said, the song is simply about how Utada wants to be a man so she can communicate and understand her lover.

You really... REALLY over read the song.

  • This video reminds me of Gackt's for "Tsuki no Uta".

  • Who produced this?

  • Som futuristico bem longe ao nosso tempo, imagens incriveis, adorei.Sem contar que Utada é tudo de maravilha.

  • This song is better than all the songs on "This is the One" combined.

  • 見た事ない漢字ばっかで泣いた

  • Oh Good god plz don't become a man I think I like you more the way you are than the way I am Imagining the way you want to be.

  • agreed

  • haha funny^^

  • Lol, this song happens when you divide by zero... Interesting.

  • ...if a girl divides by zero becomes a man O_o???

  • Lol it just means the song is strange.

  • random, freaky and strange beat but i guess its like when u multiply a negative with a negative, u get a positive...

  • cool video

  • This song has such a weird sound, but I'm hopelessly addicted for that reason. It's just... GOOD!

  • reminds me of the Bjork video for "All is Love"

    love this song

  • I was so Happy When I saw this video on Vid Zone on my Ps3. I had never heard of it before but I liked it when I heard it. I never thought the would have any Utada but at least they had this one. Its kinda scary but cool.

  • What's vid zone? :o Do explain!! ^__^

  • Vid Zone is a programm on Ps3 that has loads of music videos, you can make a playlist of your favorite songs and download them to your mobile for free.

  • Scary music vid!!!! I love the computer work on it.

  • OMG..This is my third time commenting..truth of the matter is i cant get over this song....Theres to many words to say about this video..I still have more to say ...OMG...LOVE IT>>

  • for some reason, the expression Utada has at the end, conveys to me that she wants to SMACK the man in front of her. xDDDDDDD

    LMAO

i just always wondered, what if at the end, SHE SMACKED HIM ACROSS THE FACE, just as the music stops?

    xDDDDDDDDDDDDD

  • anyone notice how near the end the guy pulled out his rib and it made the girl? Total Adam and Eve moment!!! Alpha of humans!

  • wat does this song mean?

  • She's basically saying that men and women don't see things in the same light, and she wants to be a man just so she and who ever she's singing about can see things on the same terms, and stop the misunderstandings.

  • wow. This music video is so awesome. =) love the song aswell.

  • Very good!!

    Utada Hikaru... is wonderful...

Muito boa a musica, e o clipe sensacional... e a cantora dispensa comentarios!

    She's very cool!

  • thought i'd have seen her in a male form.. that woulda been cool.. was kinda waiting for that ^.^ but.. i love this song!! so much =3 its fun and kicks ass ; ]

  • awesome video and song! =^.^=

  • love this song!!! reminds me of how guys dont listen 2 girls and always try to tell us what to do like my dad!!

Please delete the extra spaces and replace the words with the actual symbols. I can't put the link as it is, so I have to put it this way...

    spread the word!

  • This song reminds me of Mulan

  • Yea..sure does....

  • o yaaa i does.

  • it was an intruiging video . i havent heard that song in years but i still remembered every word^^

  • I love the song, but ...

The chinese characters that pop up look so stupid. Especially, those are the (over) simplified ones used in communist China. We Japanese (also Taiwanese and Hong Kong Chinese) don't simplify the characters to the extent that is incomprehensible...

Utada has nothing to do with China, and so I don't understand why they used those characters that are not in use in Japan... The images on the video seem to have been made in a way westerners expect Asians to look like.

  • Does it truthfully matter? the song is awesome and thats all that matters.

  • maybe that was her intent

  • Ehhh, so what, she's originally from NYC, represent!

  • This video is very good, i love hikki, The effects are done so well!!!!!!

    amazing

  • This is such a fabulous video! (*o*)

  • beautiful song and video.

    hikki this amazing.

  • is it just me or does that city at 3:48 look exatly like mirrors edge one

  • I thought the same thing.

  • I really love the Biblical reference to Adam & Eve, and how God created Eve from Adam's rib. in the song, she writes about her frustration understanding her now ex-husband...

    "arguments that have no meanings,

this is just the way I am!

I really wanna tell you something but I can't

you make me want to be a man..."

    humans are so complex. sigh!

  • No, I love her new look!

  • with her new look (short hair, orange-ish) she kinda looks like crap... (its not on this vid, its on her '08,09 album)

  • First time I've heard this song by Hikki. Just like all of her others, I love it. Especially the video. Seems women and men shall never understand each other.

  • Yeah it's about her relationship with her ex-husband and how she wanted to see what it was like to be him so she could understand why he did things out of pride like most men do. Hence, the adams rib thing.

  • Hikki looks so sexy in a short dress + thigh-high boots. Gorgeous woman. I am in love. :3

  • damn i love her

  • I love this song so much!

  • I love Utada Hikaru this is her best song ever i love it 5*

  • i like this song but i like let me give you my love better....thanks to albel lol

  • this was the first utada song i heard.

ever since then, i have been hooked on her music.

    i absolutely loveeee it! :)

  • I think all those wires are programming Utada to become a man and what they can do.

  • Did anyone else notice the biblical refrences in the video(not lyrics video) The snake the rib.

    Just curious.

    I adore this video ^w^

  • I don't know why but this video is very sexy :)

  • she is amazing.

  • I love this song. <3 I didn't really like Easy Breezy, but I love all her old hip hop songs (from her debut).

  • right. =3

easy breezy was way too bubble gum pop for my liking. irregardless, she's the greatest artist ever. =)

  • I love this clip of her! <3333

  • this shit is the jam what program is this pm me back plz

  • Thats awesome..I like the electronic and robot type thing going on...The song is just awesome.Great Job Gurl...

  • *Is speechless*

    I couldn't think how to comment...it's such a good song...and the video...

  • Same here. <3

  • SO GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!

  • this is the coolest video i have seen in a long time, song is amazing aswel =]

  • this song is amazing it reminds me of the sort of music bjork makes.

the video is one of the best ive seen, ive heard shes making a new inglish album to be released in 2009 i hope its true.

  • I believe she said that Bjork was an inspiration for this album...D: not sure tho.

  • The thunder and the rain called you and you came

we didnt need to say, much to communicate

    now its different

    99%

    is misinterpereted

THE BEST LYRICS IVE EVER HEARD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!!!! I LOVES HIKKII!!!!!!!

  • It's supposed to be like Adam and eve? The man at the end takes off one of his ribs and makes Utada Hikaru. Like the bible.

  • Really love this song. This is the first song i have heard from her. After listen , i want to listen all her song .

  • God this video is stunningly beautiful. I don't know if the imagery is intentional, but the whole android thing makes me think of a representation of her wanting to be better than a woman AND a man, and so she's using android imagery. Like, maybe the only way she can really convey her feelings is to be totally without them? I know that makes little sense. You reach a point with people you love where sometimes it's hard to feel the same passion and caring for them because of the pain they caused.

  • Hmm, I never understood her being an android until now. I love the part especially where she connects with the man at the end, and they seem to become one.

  • I never thought of it like that.

    Good interpratation.

    =]

  • Aww thanks. Just my feelings on it. I'd be curious to hear everyone else's take on it.

This may or may not get an answer, but does anyone know of any other music videos with android imagery in them like this one? I like the aesthetic of cold unfeeling machinery being infused with very human qualities. It's very interesting and filled with much metaphor. Genre of music is unimportant. Don't be shy to suggest something. I'd be grateful. All that comes to mind is Bjork's "All is full of love"

  • You know acutally she said Bjork inspired her for this album

  • Woah. I don't think I could have come up with that at all. Great and insightful commentry.

  • I love this video. Its so cool. Utada is cool. Keep going Utada. I love you!!!!!

Nice for putting this on here.

    thankyou.

  • I adore Utada!

This song seriously stands out to me right now.

    10/10

  • ooooooohhhhh... its so corny

  • Love Hikki.............She Rocks!!!!!

  • I don't think this music video means she's lesbian.

If you paid attention to the start of the video, there were astronauts and gymnasts. I thought it had something to do with the sexism in Japan.

    Doesn't it seem so?

  • oooooooohhhhhh.......

  • other than when shes a creepy robot/machine she looks beautiful in the mv

  • I think the creepy robot thing is pretty awesome though. Really interesting to look at.

  • yeah, this is so epic!

  • Well I mean its awesome anything Utada is awesome but yea.. Ok I gotta stop commenting now D: its addicting

  • yea and i mean i get this video, she wants r communicate like men do so she could undertsand and thy can undertsand too.

  • ....she's married -_-

  • divorced....

  • i swear she got a divorce though..

  • well, that doesn't really mean she's a lesbian...

  • well, a lot of her LYRICS sing to guys..err..why would you want to watch her be lovey dovey with her guy?...weirdo

    >_>

  • yea i knwo that, but i just wanetd to knwo who your husband was, i dont give a fuck what they do.

cuz he is lucky as hell,

  • yes that bastard is

  • and what is the gayass rivalry thing between her and hamasaki ayumi, they are both in 2 different catagories of music?

  • there IS no rivalry...ayumi may be more "pop"-y but in the end, they are both generally "j-pop"

  • this message in this song ... I can really relate to sometimes ... most of time , I really too much relate.

  • utada is awsome i cant wait for her 2008 english album

wait did this album actually debut in america or in japan

so did she just make a english album or was it for america??>>

  • Album was released in America but it didn't do anywhere near as well as it deserved. The album is called Exodus, released under the name "UTADA" (rather than Utada Hikaru), and it's awesome. You can buy it from HMV japan :D

  • This was also released in most of europe and in the Uk. Devil Inside did well on the club chart, and this song got a lot of air play... the only problem being that nobody seemed to actually know who sings it.

  • 1:25 this also appeared in the Gazette's No.666!

  • このビデオは非常に元である! それを愛しなさい!

  • whoa luv her music!

i luv this song after listening to it for a while ^_^ i think she would look really good as a vampire from the Twilight series with her red eyes and really pale smooth skin xD she looks so cool in this video!!!!

  • can sombody explain the machanical input on this to me

  • I love how her eyes are red O.O they look soooo cool!!!!

  • wow! i thought she said it was about, how her husband and her were having arguments and she didnt know why and so she was wishing she was a man.

  • I think er syle was too powerful for our tase back then, and I think she should give it another go here!

  • that's definitely it :)

  • AHH I MISS THIS SONG!!!

  • me too... me too

  • I also think that the clips of the men were being downloaded into the robotic Utada creating a femaled male** The rib that was cracked out of the guy could've meant that she was being reborned into a man from the male rib.

So maybe she was being programmed then re-borned into or as a man.

    OPINION.

  • huh?

  • I love this. The symbolism is so powerful.

A good clip doesn't have to look good. When it shows the clips of men in the background like the astronaut etc. She wants to be a man. Too understand them, too understand her husband, why are women treated differently.

She said on an interview that it was about her sex like with Kiriya (Ex-husband)

    I love this! POWERFUL!

  • this is weird!

  • Well we all know that utada hikaru is an awesome singer...beside she's very popular in japan...i am a big fan of her...well i guess all of you too...well love this song too and ofcoures all of her songs...thank you for supporting her...

    DOMO...ARIGATO and DOI...DASHI...MASTE!!!

  • this song is awesome....utada hikaru really is a great singer....she's my idol...heheheh...well a great singer deserves a great voice....the song is great....
