Ugh yah a long time ago when we renovated our house I set up a media center, only to find out that my receiver only had 1 optical in so I had to use analog audio but I found that my receiver supports virtual 5.1 so I enabled that and it sounded just as good as real 5.1. But back then i had 5.2 :D
Was hoping you knew more about the remotes. I have a VERY similar setup, But I'm still using a mouse/keyboard. I have a Logitech Harmony Remote. What I want to do is buy an IR Sensor for the PC, so I can do what you are doing. But with the harmony remote...because my harmony also is setup for my tv, tivo, stereo....
Any suggestions of one that the harmony will "learn" ?
I'm using a HTPC with MediaPortal and a Harmony One and it works very well ;)
Just select a random PC in the harmony software (My PC was actually in the list! (Dell Inspiron 531 <- Try that one)). And it will work as an (Windows) Media Center remote. You can than configure MediaPortal to listen to Media Center remotes (It's an easy option in the MediaPortal Configuration utility).
I used the IR reciever which was shipped with my dell PC.
In this setup the roles are kind of reversed. You can set your harmony to mimmick any remote device, but it's the IR software that will need to learn the commands. EventGhost, Girder or WinLIRC (or LIRC in Llinux) will do the job.
You just need to set your video output resolution to 1920x1080 from your operating system. MP should pick up on this default resolution, as will XBMC I believe. That's it. Anything that gets rendered is already being upscaled.
Monochrome. The last version I was using required the tweaking of an XML file to remove the compatibility warning. Since posting this I moved on to StreamedMP skin and eventually migrated to XBMC all together. I'll be uploading a new video of that setup soon.
How can a Dvi cable be that long ? why not link the computer with ethernet to the HTPC near ur media center setup and then from the HTPC connect the dvi and/or Optical audio cable.
@daspand The cables can be very long, there's no maximum length necessarily and it depends more on the build quality and characteristics of the cable. That said, I don't have the HTPC in the living room for two reasons. First, PCs make a lot of ambient noise with the fans. Second, it's my main office/gaming PC as well, and doing those on the couch is cumbersome.
The program that maps the remote to the computer is Girder, but another free software that does the same will work: EventGhost. I'm using this in my new setup (check out my last video).
MP only runs when I launch it from the remote, using the exe I wrote. This only works in XP since Win7 changed how display priority is set. I'm still learning the ropes there, but am planning on writing my own software for Win7 as well. I'll msg you a link to the XP version but you run it at your own risk.
Question is, i have 42 inch tv also plug in to computer. and i have MEDIA CENTER remote - as well that works with media portal -
but the movies i downloaded from AXXO dont work on media portal - how do i do codec thing so it can play also ,, how do you setup to display the movie picture where you selecting the movie instead of folder .
Thanks for posting this, this is helpful for folks that are noobs at htpc, I'll be running an amd dual core 2.7 ghz, so should do HD fine, mobo will be hdmi so I'll go that route, I think I will try xbmc for pc because I wont be using a tuner card, at least yet..
GREAT SETUP~ can I ask what the specs of the pc are, just curious. So You recomend the snapstream rf remote? will any windows mce remote work? not sure I need RF.
PC isn't too powerful. It's an Opteron 175, Gigabyte K8U-939 mobo, 1GB RAM, ATI x800XL AIW, 500w PSU.
The Snapstream remote is great but yes, any MCE remote should work. RF is only necessary if you've got the HTPC located in a spot where line-of-sight communication isn't available for IR. As mine is in a completely different room, IR doesn't cut it.
Your setup looks great. What format are you using for your movie? I can get MP to play ISO files? Any suggestion . The most important thing for me is the quality. I thinking of streaming video to my HD 50" TV
also what HTPC are your using. I been looking for an extender. I need to stream movies, music etc to multiple tv. any suggestion?
what do you recommend as an extender? or should i have a HTPC for each of the TV?
I love your setup, I have been working on this exact thing for a few weeks now but have been unable to play my movies. Other than that it works like a charm. Any suggestions on how to get the movies to play?

So wait how does that work ? As in, how do you get mediaportal to run on ur HTPC ,which also happens to be ur main pc, alll the time ?
Also, u control everything with that remote right ? So how do u configure it to work with the PC (the remote) ?

My bad about that last comment ( didnt watch the part about the custom app)
So anyhow, can we get this app for free perhaps ? or if not then is thr any other app ?
