Unfortunately, though the boilers on steam engines are rather efficient (80+ %), by the time the power is transmitted to the rail, it is about 3%. Diesels have a greater efficiency and were far more reliable (steam engines spent a great deal of time in the shops) and way less labor intensive and thereby became a no-brainer replacement for motive power. External combustion engines were never very efficient.
That is called a feedwater heater, kind of like a preheater for the water coming from the tender on its way to the boiler. Basically the energy saved (by raising the water up a few degrees) by preheating the water is that much less that have to be taken from the firebox; the energy would otherwise be wasted heat.
I really don't care for the whole train/steam obsession - but I r e a l l y enjoyed the winter landscape with the steamtrain soundscape. Being an expat Northerner in the southern hemisphere subtropics this was such an excellent space-time-travel sequence!
Fusco: this is an excellent piece of film/video. Steady, solid shots, with no shaking or wasted zooms and pans. Good framing and constant focus. Simple, straightforward editing. I congratulate you and thank you for such good work.
boy is she smoky. I'm surprised the EPA doesn't have a heart attack when they see these things. I'm sure 10 years from now some liberal president is gonna outlaw steam locomotives.
That is a wicked engine. We take these types of things for granted nowadays but just imagine these things back in the 1800s and how powerful they must have looked to the people with all that sound and smoke.
Watching the train pass Gouldsboro station, I just had to smile, thinking back on my childhood at the station in my small town where the Maine Central Railroad passed by every day after school. great video...
1:51 is the most amazing shot I have ever seen and heard!! :D :D :D :D 9000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000/5 stars
@rustyshackleford1996 because while it would be nice to run those locomotives they are just dissplay locomotives.they were ither to far off to start rebuilding or they are just there for dissplay and waiting who knows some day maybe they will.but right now restoring three locomotives(#26,#3713,#565,and soon to be #2317)Right now is not the best of times to start a new locomotive.
The lonsome bone shivering sound of the train whistle... there is nothing else like it. I grew up aside a rr track in the 1940's.... I could here the rumble of a 100 car freight miles off, and that lonesome whistle!
steam engines are usually STATIONARYor in other words they dont move .steam locomotives move and yes on rails steam engines were like used at the inclind plains at ashly,PA to haul the cars up the mountain
i have no clue what all this is about with these two people but i think this video is fantastic i love 2-8-2s they rock!
oh and if the debate is about what i think it is a steam engine is usually stationary and steam locomotive moves.diesels have horn steam locomotives have whistles dont know if this has anything to do with it but just puttin in my part
Terrific footage! couldn help think of that HO CN Steam locomotive I got one Christmas when I was a boy. Too bad the dam thing never worked properly at all...I had even bought three or four cars similar to the ones here...
Beautiful video, Joe. I remember we chased this day as well. It was -4 degrees leaving Scranton and we saw them when they lost the air in the line under 81.
1000/1000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i love it watched it 9 times already :), im a big fan of 3254, never seen it in person tho, weird also, i live rather close(if 2&1/2 hours away is close)
Beautiful and professionally done video. You've managed to capture one of the few remaining recreations of a bygone period of our history. I tip my hat to you!

Nicely done video, I can tell you have an HD camera. However the train looks very dark on my display with little detail on the cars or engine being visible as they pass. The day looks dim and the snow is grayish. Is that my monitor going or is it the YouTube conversion darkening it?
The rolling stock of the steam era (and since) were seldom in a shiney, just-out-of-the-box immaculate condition. It would have been vitually impossible to keep them that way. I think these passenger cars look authentic
