I may have said 'op amp' in the video in reference to the audio amplifier that drives the speaker, but this is an LM386N-1 8-pin DIP.
I am curious to know the reason you believe it looks like a stupid mistake there are two tubes in this radio? There are many regenerative receivers that operate this way, but is not the only way it is done. In this case, the manufacturer of the kit designed the receiver using two tubes.
i am also in melbourne, after seeing it work on your vid i have decided to order one, i have been looking for another project, i have recently completed a ten tec 1254 shortwave receiver kit and now have the bug for building more, i am also a vk3 maybe catch you on air sometime cheers.
Sounds good with the Ten Tec.. I sometimes am on 438.600 FM talking to a couple of people, so you probably will catch me around there someday. Good luck building an IGen if you decide to get one going.
Overall I think it works good for what it is. Seems to pick everything up fairly well here in Melbourne Australia. As I commented though, I need to play with the coils to get it to cover the entire band, and yet want to try it on the 160m amateur band as well. I am sure there is room to experiment with it a fair bit. Bit of money for a kit, but it is a good and interesting kit to build and for me, was worth it.
The audio output is mono but could be connected to a stereo amplifier by using a mono to stereo cable. The issue is that this set works for medium and short wave reception only. I think there are designs for VHF that work on regenerative concepts, but I don't know of any personally I could recommend. Also not sure about FM. This one does AM and would demodulate an SSB signal due to the beat frequency the regen creates, but probably not good for FM.
Hi. Thanks for the video. It's great. Do you think is it possible connect this radio to stereo amplifier? They also sell short wave coils for this radio set. Do you think they work with 87,5–108 MHz? I am living in Finland and here broadcasting in those frequencies.
Two tubes in this radio looks like stupid mistake. No two transistors found for with op-amp?

No worries at all.
