Captures the fantastic quality that is so much part of the music...all those wonderful Hofmann touches--inimitable singing RH, imaginative treatment of the LH. I always felt that Schumann's piano works come alive best in the hands of an artist rooted in the Romantic tradition, a pianist who can bring to the music Schumann's boldness, color, excitement and febrile imagination--a pianist like Hofmann.
I have to agree that the Natan Brand live performance on Palexa is incomparable -- the most imaginative, febrile and at the same time tender. I love Hofmann and think this performance is pretty incredible, but I've never heard a pianist capture this piece the way Brand does. Most pianophiles haven't even heard of him. I'd just recommend listening (the Palexa set is amazing).
Well, I've known the Hofmann Kreiseleriana since it first appeared on lp; I just think that if you play it, and then Brand directly after, you'll find that in every category: interpretation, imagination, color, daring, lyricism, ardency, touch, and power, Brand takes the prize; he also plays the complete composition. Try it and then tell me you don't agree.
There are certain qualities Hofmann demonstrates which are simply beyond reach for anybody. You prefer Brand - fine... others prefer Sofronitsky or Horowitz - still fine.
What is not fine... - when you proclaim "Grand Prize Winner" in Kreisleriana racing competition ;)
Interesting thing here... Brand descends from Hofmann's teaching. But I agree. One shouldn't be so quick to judge because the performances discussed are all quite different beasts.
in my opinion hofmann is the best pianist of all times. but as a schumann interpreter he sounds like brendel would play bumble tee of rimsky korsakov, ha ha ha!
In a work that consists of episodes, this rendition does not sound episodic; there is a veiled inner string that holds the pearls together. Hofmanns small hands apparently did not hinder him from doing justice to taxing musical algorithms conceived for the piano. This interpretation sounds fresh, charming, and genuine.
what a curious interpretation! utterly his own.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
The most powerful and affecting Kreisleriana was Natan Brand's. none of the performances discussed measures up.

Brand is superb, but I wouldn't be so categorical about "none of the performances discussed measures up".
