I know I left my comment for this clip a few months ago but I would like to write another again. Arlene Francis was just amazing. I wish she had been born some decades later; we could see her on TV as a great actress. "Would it hit anything between the waist and the knees? Bennett, I don't wear one!" Other lines are really funny to hear. I think she was elegant, witty, charming; she did have class which young women today totally lack. Thanks for posting this clip.
Arlene is one of my favorite people, Her cleverness and sense of fun were contagous and added so much to every program. I still smile as I see that angelic smile, that will forever light our lives!
I love how she says "rrringing". That's very cute and beautiful...She seemed to be a very intelligent, educated woman... And her laughs and smiles make me laugh and smile too. She was a very beautiful woman, and of course very funny.
Thank you very much for putting this on, WML is a great show.
The setup for the joke at 2:17 (spoken by Arlene's husband Martin) is that minutes earlier Arlene had asked if the article in question(diaper pins) was expensive. She got a response of No. After some confusion, Arlene thought that the product was an expensive purchase and asked by she got "No" response earlier. That is when Martin inferred that for Arlene, an expensive item is over $3,000 (quite a lot of money 45 years ago).
I worked with Arlene Francis at WOR radio in 1987-88. She and I both left when WOR was sold by RKO-General to Buckley Broadcasting. She was a great lady- she taught me so much about New York and life and fame. I used to walk her home occasionally from the radio studio to her apartment, and was always amazed at the reception she received from the public- how everyone loved her.
My elderly parents just watched a dvd of these shows that I downloaded for them.
There's hasn't been a happy marriage for a very long time, but to hear them both laughing and reminiscing about the days back when these first aired remined me of how they were with each other 30 years ago. I've got a lump in my throat just thinking about it. Thank you so much for posting thse clips of a time, not so very long ago and still in many people's hearts.
You know, I've just shown this video to dad. He used to watch this show... and lol the coolest thing was to observ tears in his eyes... like a connection to the past and the good moments it might remind him of.
LOL Adorable times.. wish somehow I could go back too. People seemed happier than today.
This is terrific! Thanks so much for this, WMLandPassword. What a truly classy and talented lady Arlene was--refined and regal, but without a hint of haughtiness about her! We need more like her today.
what a terrific piece of work. thanks so much. i'm so upset that GSN (at least in my part of the country) has removed what's my line from its line up. this is a fantastic video. thanks so much!!!
Thank you so much! Now when I need my Arlene fix I can watch this beautifully constructed 'best of' video!!
Arlene is my all time favourite contestant. No one else can compare to her wit, charm and glamorous, yet girl-next-door appeal. Not to mention her comedic timing!
I am among Arlene's "new" fanbase. I discovered What's My LIne?and I can't tell you how much I adore her! She's just too cute and funny and a lady. I want to be like her! I wish I had known her: she must have been the life of the party.Thank you for posting these videos!
I know what you mean! Thank you so much WMLandPassword for posting this! I love WML, and yes Ms. Francis is the person who first made me fall in love with this show! Good-looking, mature, funny, smart, and I love her voice...the kind of lady I'd love to be when I grow up! Although I've come to love them all, John Daly, Bennett Cerf (classic!), Dorothy (too bad she passed away a bit too early, may she RIP), Martin Gabel, all the guest panelists...Ms. Arlene Francis is still my favorite!
I agree - I absolutely adore John Daly and Bennet Cerf was adorable! I love Dorothy and many of the regular guest panelists, especially Martin Gabel, Tany Randall, and Steve Allen, but by far, my favorite of all time was Arlene Francis! She really made the show for me - charming, funny, an all around beautiful person!
The first word that comes to my mind when thinking of Ms. Arlene is STUNNING. My first memory of her, believe it or not, is in "The Thrill of it All," playing a perpetually sunny, elegant, matron expecting rather late in life. Later on, I just regarded her as 'Miss WML'- perhaps the most necessary fourth of such a witty, erudite, and classy panel show. Love every response from this lady- always witty, sharp as a tack, but also warm, engaging, and smiling. Thank you for this.
I wonder what Arlene's son would think of renewed popularity amongst us younger (I'll count myself as 'relatively' younger;) viewers. I'm sure he'd be proud. His mother was one-of-a-kind. I adore Arlene, too.
I love Arlene to pieces!!! This was great, some of my absolute favorite moments (but there are so many you could fill dozens of video's ;D) she's always so witty, bright and absolutely HILARIOUS!!
And an author to boot. Besides the cookbook, she also wrote a book called _That Certain Something: The Magic of Charm_ in 1960. I'm keeping my eyes open at second-hand book stores for that one. And her autobiography too.
Arlene at 3:45 > 4:58 This occurred in an autumn 1963 episode, a few months after she nearly died in an auto wreck and suffered all sorts of injuries including a broken collar bone.
Bennett seems embarrassed that Arlene acts as drunk as a skunk -- but this might be alcohol self medication for pain?? reaction to pain meds?? reaction to alcohol and pain meds??
To 'soulierinvestments' about Arlene at the 3:45 - 4:58 mark: Ironic, given that as often as not in that period Dorothy Kilgallen was the de facto "train wreck" on the show. Yet Arlene outlived Dorothy by some 36 years.

In the clip with the bell maker she is positively plastered and it's just priceless!!! I think Bennett and Dorothy knew as well and thought it was great fun

Today, we remember Arlene Francis for her years in What's My Line? That constituted only a part of her busy life.
She worked as
one of the first, if not THE first woman host of a TV game show
the first woman to host a morning TV information show "NBC Home"
the first woman to guest host "NBC Tonight Show " for Paar (and between Paar and Carson)
a member of 1964 New York World's Fair Board of Directors
a radio show host
NBC Radio Monitor correspondent.
