I have a Lenovo T410 with the expresscard slot. I want an external gpu like you but I have no idea where to buy the components. I figure I need an external PCI express x16 which can be connected to my laptop through the expresscard right? please help :)
So you just have the video card plugged into the VGA out on the laptop, the one you ordinarily run just a cord from it and then straight to that secondary monitor?
does this not defeat the purpose of having a laptop? I thought laptops were meant to be portable, you may have well just got a desk top which is easily upgradable
@UNIXSOLJA Clearly you did no research at all before posting that comment. Try Googling "Vidock" and "eGPU" I wouldn't recommend people to your "tech business".
@UNIXSOLJA What I've done is given you proof that not only is this real but dozens of DIY tutorials exist as well as a company that produces PnP kits. As a Microsoft engineer you might want to keep up with the times. Just sayin'...
@christianjacobbright Your right! However Insulting my licensed IT service is no way to gain friends. Besides if you know a fair bit about comp certs you would know my cert is network based and not hardware. However I am a+ net+ and server+. I also said I could be wrong but, how is this possible? Was my question. No I didn't look it up. I have way to much to study right now.
Hi, I have a thinkpad T400 and the advanced dock. I tried to do same with a passive card : the ati h6570 with 2Gb (ddr3). But it doesn't works. The laptop always reboot after 4-5 seconds... What could be the right issue ?

@krisdeguy123 if you bought a graphics card that didnt fit and the PS cant handle it, then that was YOUR fault for not doing some research on the dimensions and power consumption.
I have a do not have an efficient graphics card ( intel HD 30000 however i do have some pretty decent other specs and i was wondering is it possible to hook this card up to my laptop even if i dont have and internal ATI graphics card
I really don't see the point of getting External monitors, i would only buy this hardware if it worked fully with my laptop alone (If am going to get another monitor i might as well buy a new pc and no vidock, a proper pc with a proper motherboard can always be upgraded!).
@utooberblooper well i actually went ahead and bought a A PE4L ePCI and an Nvidia Geforce 440 GT, and it's supposedly going to work with optimus to internal LCD>..
wow, I really want to make one of these but have no idea where to start. did you need software to get it to work, and would it work with a thunderbolt port? (i hear they're a bit faster than PCI)
@zian1977c some of us may like to carry things around and the ergonomics is awesome; laptops are powerful enough to play any game only to be hindered by integrated graphics.
do i have to have a desktop monitor to run the graphics card or can i have the graphics card plugged in and use my laptop instead of connecting it to another monitor
@TheFunnyMonkeyBoy no company is making external graphics card. This is a type of mod, expensive to say the least. You could always connect a nvidia card into the pci slot in that dock.
can i use this without using inline fuse? just use the dvi adapter then my old pc graphics card ati radeon xpress 200 then connect to my notebook.. will it work?
1 thing before I go ahead and mod my dock, how much more performance did you manage to get from your new setup compared to running the 4550 "natively"? The 4550 is so cheap now that I might just get one of those if the higher-end cards are too limited by the Pci bandwidth?

@Marijuana420rKo I've been planning to post some gameplay video and benchmarks actually. Next time I visit my family (where the docking station is setup) I'll post some videos.
For now I can tell you that Left 4 Dead 2 ran at a solid 60fps (with a few minor dips) in 1920x1080. It requires some tweaking since the PCIe bus is a definite bottleneck. 1 thing before I go ahead and mod my dock, how much more performance did you manage to get from your new setup compared to running the 4550 "natively"? The 4550 is so cheap now that I might just get one of those if the higher-end cards are too limited by the Pci bandwidth?
Thanks
Rune
eyeland420 1 year ago
@eyeland420 The performance gain was a lot. Unfortunately I didn't record the values from the 4550, so I don't have specific numbers. I'm able to run games in higher res, with more detail, and at a higher frame rate. 2D performance had a nice boost also. Scrolling in Firefox and other rapid 2D movement looked choppy with the 4550, but seems perfectly smooth with the 5770.
The PCIe bandwidth doesn't limit things too much. I'll post a comparison with Tom's Hardward benchmarks in a few weeks.
