I'm a Brazilian 53 years old and I keep on enjoying this classic so much. The sound of the guitar is unique, no matter the simple lyrics that are also enjoyable anyway.
no it is not the glorification, its the exact opposite. its contardictory and written by the perspective of the common man. just because mark is saying that its so easy to be a rock star doesnt mean it is (for him at least). hes making fun of the excessive lifestyle in the 80s, and also poking fun at untalented artists like pop and hair metal that are only in it for the money. knopfler is extremely anti-industry and doesnt care about money. he plays for the thrill, not the fame.
I wish MTV was like it was back in the 80s and 90s it really was music tv back then. but now its all talk and not much music I really miss oldschool MTV.
Anyone know HOW was that 3d made back in the day? With what? No windows, no mouse, not even MS Paint??? (my cellphone today can render faster probably)
you know, when i first heard this years and years ago, i use to think it was first zz-top. it took me a year for someone to tell me who it really was.
i kno what u mean man i first heard this and i had no idea who it was by, then i discover its by dire straits and it blew my mind, such a different sound then what they traditionally play.
well its not that it doesnt sound like them...i mean listen to zz top for a while and i mean hell...it sounds like a zz top song. to this day i mean i still want to believe its them even though i know it isnt.
according to mr knofler the song is the result of overheard mutterings of a delivery guy outside an electronics store. the film clip acknowledges this. Supposedly mark was watching film clips when the delivery guy walked past making comments about what was happening on screen. The chorus and the line "whats that? hawaiian noises" are what the guy said verbatim
Basically he's saying that muscians get easy money on mtv (i.e. money for nothing) and the get "chicks for free" i.e. they don't have to work for it. All from the perspective of a department store worker. (I think anyway, not 100% sure)
at least ill always know this was the first music video on M.T.V. and know its nothing but shit any one can talk bad about someone and talk fast but nobody can play guitar like mark knopfler
Only in the '80s was it considered cool to wear a fucking suit with the sleeves rolled up on-stage at a "rock" concert. Sweet video effects by the way, nice to know that's not the cutting edge anymore.
Love the guitar opening of this song, still remember the first time I heard it on the radio driving home from work one day. Somewhere in an interview Mark Knopfler said he used this guitar sound as he loved the sound that ZZ Top had with their guitars.
Same here, twenty years later, I'm fat, balding and wore out, but that pounding drum crescendo blowing the doors open for that naked axe grind still stands the hair on end.
I don't know where you saw this as the first video on MTV, but the first video shown on that day in 1981 was by a band called The Buggles, "Video Killed The Radio Star"
peahesruane,i guess the "little faggot" verse isnt politicaly correct.the faggots are so emotional that they should cant stand to hear such horrible words.
The word faggot is an incredibly offensive word. I'm not against them using it in their song, the 1st amendment gives them the complete right to do that. the music is great but the lyrics are horrible
matchbox555 2 years ago
i dont think you understand the point of the song
Antwan1500 2 years ago
yes i do
the point of the song is the glorification of materialism and inequality
people making money for nothing while others work hard
that typifies the moral darkness of the 1980s "greed is good" culture
thats why i hate these lyrics
anyone know where i can get an instrumental version ?
matchbox555 2 years ago
