Heaters were always breaking down. They were freakin ice boxes. Fun to drive unless it was snowing or raining. And it was always snowing or raining. Cleaning up and maintaining the oil spewing diesel engines and the final drives was a pain too. Inexperienced drivers would often throw a track. Never felt real safe with bangalore torpedoes and other engineer ordinance on top and stowed inside. Never felt safe away from it either. I definitely had a love/hate relationship with my M113
@PNWgroove you are right .they were ice boxes. we had detroit deisels in ours in mainz ger. i drove one for 9 months . final drive wasnt a problem unless you came down real hard on something . iwas with the third battalion eighth infantry .1986. we used to open the engine acsses pannel for heating and warming up mres . heaters never worked . they were in the right side font of the 50 cal turrent .fun thinking back on it
my MO was driver, much better seat than those hard ones in the back. Dont remember seat belts. No heater, used to burn mortar wax tubes for heat and light. Many a time sitting on top of the motor vent grill to stay warm. 1970-71
With our rifles between our legs, we were cold,covered in mud and hungry. You could hear very little over the noise, the vibration was so bad you had trouble sleeping. The heater was broken, which turns a steel box in to an ice box. If you leaned back against the steel it would chill you so you didnt. You leaned against your buddies to stay warm. But we were thankful to have our track, because it meant we didnt have to carry our gear and walk.
Aluminum is a lot stronger for Land vehicles. Though it didnt protect very much more.

@archiaskcommando
alumininum has a low melting pt, it melts easily (compared to other metals), and when it melts, it releases toxic fumes... : (

@melvinthedeathless toxic fumes? Any molten metal releases (very) small particles of it, steel is just as bad to breathe...
Lower melting point=easier shaping and casting, once a vehicle is on fire, the melting point is meaningless...
The alloy the Gavin is made of actually has a benefit, it protects a lot better against shaped charges...

shitty armor, no one stayed inside the vehicle, the soldiers would sit on top of it, but they made red-neck armor and all was saved, not

My lord, I beat Mike Sparks to a M113 (not a Gavin) video. Thanks for uploading.
