In Ukraine, there are millions of Eastern Catholics called Uniates. Like Maronites, they are not orthodox but firmly faithful to the Holy See of Rome, even if their liturgy is byzantine. They were exterminated by Stalin who gave them the choice between joining the KGB-run Soviet Orthodox Church or being killed. Milions were starved to death or slaughtered by the communists.
1) ok you are not orthodox cs the catholic church got divided from the orthodox for long time 451 after Christ, and for your information there were no catholic churches, the orthodox was first and the other came after. Second part 2....
The other important thing is that you are not ARAB, think about it my maronite brother or sister, even if u talk the language, the in our lovely country weren´t arab, they were aramaic origins and phoenician. I love the maronite, but i dislike when they say we are arabs, cs no christians are arabs!!.

MARONITE CATHOLICS are not Orthodox. Maronites are more than "just" Christians. They are Catholic. Maronites are protected under Canon Law as the "traditional part" of the Latin Church. Roman Catholics were modernized under the Vatican's Ecumenical Council II. But, the Canon Law protects Maronites from losing their tradition to modernized Roman Catholic parishes. Roman & Maronite Catholics are subject to and are both in obedience to the Pope.

i have very big sympathies with my Orthodox Brothers and Sisters from your part of World, how is the life over there? i'm happy to see that you people ever stay what you are, Orthodox and Proud! :)
why is that ? If you're talking about the middle east in general maybe yes, but Lebanon second largest Christian sect is othrodox, and greek orthodox to be more specific.. they have political and social importance, and are obviously proud to be Christian before anything.
They are modern Syriacs. The names Assyrians Arameans Chaldeans and even Phoenicians are the result of modern nation building.
There's a big difference between "syrians" and "syriacs". Todays syrians are arabs or they think they are. Thats a result of a wrong ideology called panarabism in syria. Syriacs are the aramaic speaking minority in those countries....
@assyrian2NV man you assyrian claim all syrians and chaldeans are assyrian, when are you guys gonna stop this hype? chaldean are chaldean, syrians are syrians. thats that with that. go read some history. im chaldean but half assyrian, but i always say chaldean.
@iraqiboy The term Syria refers to the Western part of the Assyrian empire, we call ourselves Surayeh for a reason the Ancient Greeks referred to us as "Syrians". The Chaldeans are ethnically Assyrian the name Chaldean refers to the Chaldean faith, in 1552 Mar Shimun Yohannun Sulaqa established the first Chaldean Catholic Church and he was from the Rabban Hurmizd church which is the Assyrian Church of the East. He was originally the "Patriarch of Athur" changed to "Patriarch of Babylon".
@iraqiboy And you always say youre Chaldean? Yet your nickname says "Iraqiboy". You're assimilating yourself into the Iraqi Arab culture which took our country, dont go coming to me and say that you are Chaldean when you DON'T EVEN KNOW what the word Chaldean means, if you call yourself SURAYA then you're calling yourself an aSURAYA which means a person from ASSUR or ASHUR. We are all one people; whether Assyrian, Chaldean or Syriac we all came from Assyria.
@assyrian2NV iraqi doesnt mean that im an arab, hence im iraqi-chaldean. i know what chaldean is thank you. so if am suraya therefor im Asuraya? which school you went to? so what happened to the people from babylon? they are not suraya? chaldean didnt come from assyria, they came from babylon. listen bro, we all suraya regardless of our ethincs group.
@iraqiboy What does Suraya mean you imbocile? Spell it in Assyrian, u use the Alap akhadaya which becomes silent ܐ̃ܣܘܪܝܝܐ. We drop the initial A in nearly every word since the fall of the Assyrian empire for example a-KH(r)ENE - OTHERS , A-KHARAYA - LAST, a-KHA(d) - ONE...In the Assyrian language there is the rule where certain letters become silent because of the 'Tliqta' and this usually occurs with the Initial Alep, Dalath and Resh. Suraya is actually a-SURAYA and our language aSURETH
@iraqiboy Clearly how old are you? You should know how to speak your own language by now, oh thats right you're IRAQI you don't learn to speak your mother language you'd rather speak Arabic. We are all SURAYEH meaning we are ASSYRIANS.
@assyrian2NV ya6a6le 6a6ee? yea i speak Aramaic. you can't base your debate on assumption. therefore, i wont reply to you, because u think everything is A to you.
@iraqiboy Ask yourself whats the language that 'Syriacs' use? Its called Turoyo, originally a-TUROYO, meaning a-TURAYA 'ATURAYA' or as we call it in Eastern - ATHURAYA. Call yourself whatever you want but don't deny your Assyrian heritage.
@iraqiboy You are ignorant, clearly you don't even know how to write in Assyrian if you don't know that we start off our words with Alap a-khadaya and end with Alap a-kharaya. This was carried through our Akkadian roots.
@assyrian2NV I take it from your name that you must be Assyrian. is Western Assyrian the language of Jesus? you see i have always had an immense interest in this language and the other Aramaic languages. Most especially the religion and the culture of this region, i would learn the language out of mere curiosity but as you probably know there isn't much out there in terms language guides or stuff like that, I swear i must have been Assyrian in another life.

This was carried through our Akkadian roots. Think of it, how do you say brother? A-khona or Khona? I'm teaching you the foundations of the Syriac language and you chose to ignore why? Because you know its a fact? A fact we started dropping our initial A in our vocabulary? Suraya or Asuraya?
@assyrian2NV You wouldn't use "a-meshiki" for a Christian, you'd say "Meshikhi" or "Messihi". Every Semitic language uses bi-iteral roots, or two lettered roots. The root, "A-Kh" uses Alep and khe(he). But in nearly all Semitic languages, "A-KH" means brother. In Hebrew, אח, Ach. In Arabic, أخ, and in Sureth, ܐܞܘܢܐ. It still has the root ܐܞ, which again, means brother. Henceforth, the "Assurya" for "Suraya" claim won't work. The Akkadians did not add a random alep, anywhere.
@assyrian2NV Turoyo is actually ܛܪܘܝܘ meaning, "People of the Mountains". Think ܛܘܪܐ, like mountain. ܛܘܪܐܢܐܝܐ, "Turanaya" It, through time, became shortened into Turoyo.
yes the maronites are syriacs (assyrians/arameans). the maronites or the maronite church derived from the syriac orthodox church. the founder of the church was mar maron. mar maron was a bishop of the syriac orthodox church.
Syriac christian sects churches: maronites(catholics), malkites(orthodox and catholic), jacobites(orthodox), nestorians(orthodox and catholic = chaldean church of babylon)
Saint Maroun lived during the 4th/5th-century in Antioch, an imperial city of the Roman Empire (today northwest Syria). It is known that he was hermit-monk, I've never come across any writings which state he was a bishop. I agree that Saint Maroun was of Syriac origin (Antiochene-Syriac church). Keep in mind that term "Orthodox" was not used during this time. The universal church was made of the Western church (Rome) and the various Eastern churches.
The split between the Western and Eastern churches occurred in 1054AD, although the Maronites never broke communion with Rome (the Maronite church is the only Eastern church that does not have an Orthodox counterpart church). So legalbeagle26 is correct when he/she said Saint Maroun never broke union with Rome. Also, for Syriacus to say Saint Maroun was a Syriac Orthodox, is not correct. The term "Orthodox" was used after 1054AD. Today exists a Syriac-Orthodox church & Syriac-Catholic church.
yes, i think the Maronite Church was basically Syriac Orthodox for a long while, and later joined with Rome in the Crusades era. they still have many traditions and culture in common with Syriac Orthodoxy, but they are Catholic.
@Chichkabeb There was always Catholics, Catholic means Universal (Body) and Apostolic means of the Apostles, even the Orthodox process this after they broke away and they still profess it, while Eastern Catholic's remained the same ever since! That's why Eastern Churches are almost Identical in their traditions!
@Syriacus I believe what you say about the Maronite Catholic Church being Syryo-Aramaic in origin and essence however you are wrong to say that Saint Maroun was a Syriac-Orthodox Bishop....
How can this possibly be if the Council of Chalcedon which is what split the oriental orthodox ( which includes: the Syriac orthodox aka Jacobites . Armenian orthodox, Coptic orthodox, Assyrian orthodox aka Nestorian, Ethiopian orthodox aka Abysinian and the Malankara orthodox church ) from the rest of the Church was held in 451 AD and Saint Maroun Died over 40 years earlier in 410 AD. You can not call anyone before the Council Orthodox because there was no split yet !
There are two groups of Syriac christians; (1) Antiochene (West Syriac) which includes Malankara-Orthodox Syrian church, Syrian-Orthodox (Jacobite) church, Syro-Malankara Catholic church (India), Syriac-Catholic church and Maronite-Catholic church. (2) Chaldean (East Syriac) which includes Assyrian Church of the East (Persia), Chaldean-Catholic church and Syro-Malabar Catholic Church (India). The Melkites are of Byzantine (Greek-Orthodox) origins, not Syriac.
Youre absolutely right aslout but there's one thing you should correct it...
The Melkites are of Syriac origin. These Syriacs converted to the Greek-orthodox Church during time. They have ethnically nothing to do with Greeks. They are Syriacs!
Even the term "Malkites" was given from other Syriacs in addition to the convertion, because Malkites means Malkoye and Malkoye translated means worshipper of the King (of byzanz). So they're simpy Syriacs who converted to the greek ritus
