Anyone catch Bob's little wave with his hand as he walked out, that's a rare sight there, he really hardly did anything like that that I can recall, was just a straight march to the front part of the stage generally speaking.
If I am right, I think this is the show he did after his wife passed. I remember that he took time off from taping to grieve, so this could be it. Don't quote me on that , but I know his wife passed in late 1981. That might be the reason for the great show of support from the audience.
That can't be the reason why. First of all notice the design of the turntable, that padded design started around December 1982, nearly a year after his wife had passed. I don't know the exact reason why he got a standing ovation on this particular episode.
@devswartz Personally I'm hoping that Alex Trebek will go on until at least 2019 which would mark his 50th year in television, and I hope they host a big event episode at Carnegie Hall or something like that, and the audience gives HIM a standing ovation when he comes out.
This is correct. Johnny, Rod, and Rich up through season 35 had a little spot right on the corner of the stage. Now Rich has his own little platform just off the stage.
If this took place right after Dorothy Jo died, you would think he would have thanked the viewers for their cards and letters of sympathy. So maybe it's not that episode.

Les Moonves is a jackass that doesn't like game shows period. It'll be a cold day in hell before GSN gets back TPIR. Check with us on June 31st, when it'll be snowing too.
Near the end of the season, they occasionally take a week break (and I think around Christmas they do the same thing). However, for the most part, they tape every week.
Sometime either 1981 or 1982 they redid the stage with a new background for him coming out, no more lights around the borders and also the newer more modern theme.
for xmas 1982 it looked funny as the turntable had been refinished, but the rest of the set around the turntables hadn't been. Something you'd NEVER see nowadays.
Man, I loved how the last five-ten years of the show, he got a big standing ovation EVERY SINGLE TIME. I'm guessing this audience was juiced into doing it, too--not the case later on. Him and Oprah, man. They were the only ones who could command a huge, crazed standing ovation every single episode. We'll miss you, Bob.
Now you've made a jackass of yourself: you assumed something without any real facts. The show, indeed, has had its share of "differently-abled" contestants. There's even a youtube video of a wheelchair contestant playing switcheroo. Do a little "searching" before you make false accusations, how about?
Here's a dirty little Price is Right secret: These days the staff directs you to give Bob a standing ovation. At least that was the case when I saw the show a couple years ago. Two staffers were on stage giving everybody the signal to stand up and applaud.
I seem to remember Bob at one point saying that sometimes kids were let in, if it was for like "Make A Wish" or something like that. Alternatively, they might not have had that rule at that time.
Everybody loves Bob........

The way the music and the ovation happened, you'd think it was the final episode or something.

Of all the years, Johnny Olson announced, he only missed one taping on Match Game from 1977, I forgot who subbed for him.

Wow...the theme's on for a full minute at the top of the show. That's extremely rare.
I'm amazed it took him 10 years to get his first standing O, especially since he was number one from day one.

But his wife died in 1981...so I'm guessing he took a week off to mourn her death, and then he filmed it, and then this aired a year later...
