they did with Load and Reload - experimenting with metal, country and blues sounds. and they did get ALOT of stick for it (although I personally love Load; Hetfield has a great voice for those styles)

Well, ... And Justice For All has been noticed to be a creation of the Progressive Thrash Metal genre with bands like to Prototype to appear from such influence. Voivod sorta appeared later to that sound with Nothingface but had some progressive elements in their thrash sound since Killing Technology. Its similar to Death, who then later became more than a death metal band (creators of it too) but a technical death metal band too (as well as creating the genre as well)
