@TheGreektiger Nope, he was born in 1964. Still speaks a lot of how good he was when becoming an MVP of world's second best basketball league when 40.
@CARLOSGURO Spanish say Gasol is the best european, croatians say it's either Kukoc or Petrovic, germans say the best one is Nowitzki, greeks say it's definitely Galis... I SAY IT'S SABONIS
sabonis in my mind is rite there with kareem and hakeem i mean 7'3 shooting 3 pointers, hes athletic, could pass, handle the ball, and had great footwork and a nice hook shot who could stop him!!!!!! i understand he didnt play in the nba in his prime but with all those injuries and still puttin up numbers i give him props
great video..thanks for making it & uploading to youtube. the quality is good too not choppy or blurred out clips like a lot of mixes ive seen. really thanks for uploading it so that people like myself who never got to see him play can at least watch these
fuck shaq Arvydas so so much better center than him. shaq is only 325 pounds of meat the only thing he was special in was dunking, putback dunking, alley dunk etc, etc. sabonis had a great jumpshot, excellent ball handling skills, post game, hook shot, awesome pass, and he was one of the most consistent shooters from the free throw strike. too bad he didnt play in the NBA in his prime cause he would of been something else, shaq would be probably working in mcdonalds
sorry but Shaq easily puts Sabonis to shame. His post moves and footwork combined with his superior size, strength, and vertical leap made him unstoppable. If muscle were all you need to score then Ben Wallace would be a top scorer. Sabonis entered the NBA at age 31 and his best year was 16 and 10. Decent but doesn't even compare to Shaq or any of the 90s' great centers at age 31.
Shaq was an unstoppable scorer, defensive presence, and great rebounder. Sabonis never reached his level.
if Sabas went in NBA when he was 20 and get 30+ minutes immediately (as average Europeans as Rubio gets today) Sabas would rewrote history and considered as one of the greatest alongside Doctor, Jordan and Wilt. People from USA have to learn that they are NOT the best and Dirk showed last spring...
@soulyrasheed You can't really say that because there's no way to know that. I don't dabble in what-ifs because nobody is psychic. The USA is easily the best at basketball. Just look at the unstoppable Dream Team. Dirk is good but he's just one player and he didn't show anything to the USA especially since he's not even counted among the best players of all time. There's only one foreign player I put up there and that's Hakeem Olajuwon.
I liked Rasheed until the game he threw a towel in Sabonis face . Sabonis was playing as well as he could at that stage of his carer and Rasheed was a man child but it made me sick to see that. Players say when it comes down to it what means the most to them is the respect of their piers and Sobonis is in the HOF , and that say's it all. Lets see if Rasheed makes it
@treyslap Thanks for the heads up; I checked it out. Good thing he didn't. Walton is very dramatic. I didn't like him until I read more about his relationship with Mr. Wooden. Same goes for Kareem. I'm a GSW fan so since their teams got the best of the GSW most of the time they were not my favorite players. Although I think Kareem is one of the top 5 GOAT. The Sky Hook for 10 years at least was the most unstoppable shots ever
@lammy227 he was drafted in 86, but his country didnt allow him to come over till mid 90's. he would have played with clyde drexler both in their prime
Players at Sabonis's age and with these injuries just don't play basketball, let alone play in the NBA. Sabonis was a productive player in the NBA until the very end. If he was this good at this stage, a prime Sabonis would be like a point guard version of Wilt Chamberlain.
if only sabonis played in the NBA when he was younger he is a legend now...but even though at 31 he is still skilled center...maybe be if he played in this generation..he would be the most dominat center..cuz now thrs no dominat center next to d howard...unlike on the 90s..shaq mutombo robinson olajuwon etc...
What was he doing between 89-92??? oh, he was playing for forum filatelico valladolid. It´s a lack of respect both to the team and the player to forget that... those were not trash years, for he was 25 when he arrived just the season after winning the olympic gold medal and was considered the best center in the world for lots of people (obviously along with olajuwon and others).
best european player ever only disputed with petrovic and followed by nowitzky, gasol, meneghin, epi, kukoc, smits..
Im From Lithuanian and i never sow better player then A. Sabonis even now when he left professional basktball. there is no more players like Sabonis, and never be for sure.
The problem a lot of people have is that most of what they've seen of Sabonis (and most of what's here, to be honest) is after he had numerous leg injuries, including 2 Achilles injuries and a number of knee and groin injuries. He couldn't move as well as he could when he was in his prime, and he was a 31-year-old rookie in the NBA. But he was 7'4", could pass like Steve Nash, and was a legit 3-point threat. The saddest thing is that we'll never know just how good he could have been.
@JimTheFly I saw him a lot in USSR. He was so great!!!! It's a pity that he did not play in NBA in his prime time. He would be much better than most of NBA centers. Do not forget, he shut down Robinson in 1988 after the career end injury when his Achilles tendon was ruptured severely.
Arvydas Sabonis was the best!!! he was not called 'The Miracle of Nature' for no reason!! the best Eyropean basketball player after the GREAT DRAZEN PETROVIC!!!!! greetings from Greece....
@REDorDead3792 That's true :) Thank you for your kind words. I think that Greece is a lovely country where lives good people. Good luck in European basketball championship :). Best regards from Lithuania!
@epicguo Yao is nothing compared to Sabonis, too bad he went to NBA after his numerous injuries, believe me , we saw him in his prime... He WAS the BEST center player in him time. Ofc Kareem, Hakeem was good in their time, Dirk is good now, but Sabonis WAS way better than Dirk, Yao or ant other center similar to his age.
If you want to bring up Sabonis' numerous injuries then you have to bring up Yao's. Yao in his prime had the entire offense running through him and was nearly unstoppable.
The problem is your entire argument is based on what-ifs. You'll never know how good Sabonis would have been if he played in the NBA in his prime. All we DO know is that he was an above average player in the NBA at age 31, though his play wasn't anywhere near the level of Hakeem, Shaq, or even Dirk and Yao.
@SolidSnakeRules Well he didn't get the chance, but he won against the dream team and overpowered David Robinson. Anyway, Sabonis is so praised because he's a center like no-one else. That's why many people say hes not the best center of all, but the best player of all time. As a big man he could pass like no-one else, he had a huge basketball IQ, shoot 3s, and his game was so smooth. No center ever could do that, and no player has ever been so complete. Not even Jordan.
@darthukas He didn't win against the dream team. Nobody did. He won against a team of college players led by Dan Majerle. The dream team was formed in 1992. Again, you cannot say a player is the best of all time when the level of competition he faced was not the best. There's no telling how good he would have been in the NBA, especially because the moment NBA players were allowed to compete in the Olympics they completely dominated every team they faced. They didn't even call a single time out!
i always thought that he was toe to toe with dirk as the beat european player , but now dirk has the ring so to me #41 is the best european ever in the nba
