@DEREKJENNINGSBASS you are an idiot if you think that you have to be good to sell lots of records. So, according to you, Justin Bieber is one of most awesome musicians of all time, isn't he? And why would Sonic Youth hate on greenday? They piss all over these "punk rockers" (aka GD)
...when they were on Epitaph they would brag about how 'punk' belongs on an indie, how they turned down major label offers, blah blah blah. But see, that's because Offspring (also on Epitaph) sold millions of copies, and naturally Rancid thought they would do the same. Well,it DIDN'T. So what does Rancid do? They sign to a major. What happened to 'punk' belonging on an indie? They went back to Epitaph, but, too late. They're now known as sellouts.
...Good Riddance, Wake me up when September Comes, Boulevard of Broken Dreams. How'd you expect your original fans to feel? Same thing happened to Good Charlotte. They come out on their 1st cd looking like NSYNC with guitars, get ragged on for being poseurs, WHINE about getting ragged on for being poseurs, so they get tatted up & wear Rancid shirts, then go on tour with...wait for it...Justin Timberlake!! Hello?!! Speaking of Rancid, now THERE'S a group that can be called sellouts...
I'm surprised at everyone getting their panties in a twist because people say Green Day sold out. How can Armstrong not understand why they say he's a sellout when before Dookie, he claims he never watched MTV cause it was nothin but pop crap, yet your band then makes videos for MTV and your band goes on there for promotions. Then, as if to prove they're punk, thet'll put out Insomniac, but when it fails to sell huge, they go back to writing KIIS-FM friendly songs like ...,
I love all these " punk" bands calling Green Day a sellout. Green Day is a band. A band plays music to, and for, people. Band signs to a record company$ so people can purchase music on vinyl, CD etc. Band in turn makes a percentage, record company and managers take most of it. The more records you sell, the higher the percentage. It would be nice to make a LIVIING at something you love, rather than living on your girlfriends couch eating beans and toast. I can't stand the word" sellout"
LOOK Why are we bickering....PUNK ROCK is something explosive, unpredictable and savagely honest. If you think a certain act isnt punk because the got popular your a freaking narrow minded, trendy little poser. long live the idea of rebellion and punk rock.
why are they saying that punks aren't suppose to earn a million dollars? isn't that a GOOD thing? jeez... and i personally dont care what genre green day is because i just love their songs
I am an antichrist I am an anarchist Don't know what I want But I know how to get it I wanna destroy passerby 'Cause I wanna be Anarchy No dogsbody Anarchy for the UK It's coming sometime and maybe I give a wrong time stop at traffic line Your future dream is a sharpie's scheme. If you know what real punk is, you'll understand what I just wrote. I hope Bille Jean and Gay Cool and Mike Cunt realize how shitty Green Gay is.
@wimpyliberalbuster32 sex pistols are just as bad as green day. i love green day but the sex pistols re made that song for guitar hero? neither green day or sex pistols are real punk.
selling out in my opinion is just a completely BS thing to say about any band, like they have the right to make whatever decisions they want. and besides, once they signed with reprise those first couple albums were similar to the lookout! albums. later on they matured and still deliver great music with mature subjects and lyrics. as for the pop vs punk argument, they take elements from both and fuse it into a more melodic style of punk. its really between the two genres. and they made it work
ARE YOU KIDDING ME? The only thing that was sold out with green day is all of the CD's at stores, it's not their fault everybody loves them and that's a lie saying that punk bands don't sell a million albums, Nevermind- Nirvana. Tell me how many of those records sold.

@DEREKJENNINGSBASS whats even funnier is that same year (1994) the offspring sold 7 million copies of their album smash while still on epitaph records...so the critics (sonic youth) can eat that one too
how on earth can people say that "real punk rock is just not commercially accessable." maybe hardcore isn't. but punk rock STARTED OUT as pop music. listen to The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, or The Circle Jerks if you don't believe me.
@mightyafrowhitey yea, that stuff was all over the Radio.Top 40 radio at that. Didn't The Ramones Beat on the brat stay at #1 for something like 37 weeks?
I think punk is whatever you define it to be, just as music is. Putting a set definition to a genre is like requiring all artists to use only number 2 pencils instead of number 4. What the fuck?
Anyway who gives a shit about the genre in the end? Just listen to some damn good music, dont give a flying ass what it is.

Green Day has been my favorite band since I was like 7 and I'm 18 now. They DID redefine punk. Just because they signed with a major record label and wanted bigger things for themselves doesn't make them sellouts. it doesnt mean they sold out just because they got huge. selling out would be if someone from a major record label dictated how their music sounds to get them more plays on tv and on the radio. green day have always made awesome music

Green Day was getting bigger and bigger and bigger so I don't think they had a choice but to sign with a major.
people they arent sellouts they needed money a while back and people copyed them and sold the stuff they bought back then and dosent every band sell shirts and shit like that huh over night punk school does and theyre a small band im my town so shut up green day is not a sellout band
I don't really like Green Day's music but I have a pretty good respect for people that do whatever they wanna do, fuck whatever else thinks. Bravo Green Day. :)
all the shitty critics saying they're sellouts anyone who's is in a band will know, that whatever music they write that sounds good to them and they enjoy playing, they will happilly keep it to show off, instead of going, no its not punk enough, and throwing it away, and put it this way if someone offered anyone a shit load of money and the oppotunity to play massive venues, we would cut the "noble" bullshit out and easily accept the offer
ISN'T DOING WHAT YOU WANT THE WHOLE FUCKING POINT OF PUNK? SO PUNK HAS A 'CODE' NOW THAT BANDS LIKE GREEN DAY SHOULD 'HONOR' AND TURN DOWN LABELS? ARE YOU PEOPLE FUCKING SANE? Excuse me, but this load of crap seriously irritates me like hell. So much for doing and expressing what you want, huh, Jeff Bale? WELL FUCK YOU. Goddamit, these musical all-knowing smartasses, who gives a shit about your opinion?!
I truly think Green Day are not sellouts what so ever. They're just doing what they love to do, and that is making great punk rock. And if they make money in the process of doing what they love it's their buisness. If people the ones who think they're sellouts and don't like them period. like Billie said there's the ******* door. See ya later!
@dracidus10. Man fuck you, ya u have a right to call me a "dumbass" id like to see you part of a punk scene. Id like to see u even play in a band. i can already do whatever the hell i want to, cause guess what, I live in AMERICA and have the right to do whatever i want to do
They are EXTREMELY good to their fans! As long as they stay that way, they aren't sell outs in my book. I've been to their shows and the shit they do is awesome. There aren't many concerts you can go to where they allow over 15 or 20 people up on the stage and dance like hell with the performers!!! They are a HUGE band and yet they still act like they're a local band performing at a club. THAT is what makes me love them so much =)
Why do you people consider any musicians signed to major labels and making six figure salaries to be sell outs? Besides, if they kept making the same records over and over again, your asses would all be complaining about THAT.
@bonfirejovi I agree with you, but The Ramones actually never had a number one, in the US or the UK. In the US their highest charting single was "Rockaway Beach", #66 on the charts. In the US their highest charting album was "End of the Century" something like #44 on the charts.
@jaketheman091 Exactly. Most people assume that Green Day are posers just because a lot of their fans are young, they sold millions of records, they changed a little, and they're a mainstream 2010 band. If you look at the members' history you will see that they have been there 'n' done that. But people change, tastes change. Once you become a father and a husband, you need to take control of your priorities and do the best for your family. So guess what? Million dollar a day? Hell yeah!
@n00bfayce Yeah dude. theyre considered "sellout"s, because even the most generic, young audience are solely moved by traits of the band, more so than their music. Green Day are just as important as other greats like Beatles, Led Zep, Beach Boys, or Greatful dead. Shouldnt whether you like grunge, dreampop, hair metal, speed metal, acoustic etc.
@joemeers92 Because Grunge had actually existed in the NW since the beginning of the 80s. And the term was actually coined in the mid 80s. Only when the media picked up on it in 1991 did everyone say "OMG GRUNGE"
@sonorama37 Um, Nirvana was FAR from "inventing" grunge....they came out at the end of the 80s, while many bands of the genre (Soundgarden, Green River, and the Fastbacks) made a name WAY before they even existed.
@jaketheman091 You compare grenday to Nirvana? I'm sorry for you you have no idea what punk rock is about and any true punk will say the same.I'm just watching this for kicks and laughs. Green Day are a POP band.
@scumgod13 If I told you that I have albums by JFA, Fugazi, Minor Threat, and Black Flag, AS WELL AS Green Day, is your mind blown? Seriously - I don't give a shit about what's "TRUE" punk rock, because I don't define myself in that way. I just appreciate any kind of rock music.
@jaketheman091 Well, I do too I love all Genre's of music from country to hardcore. but I'm not the punk Rock purist selling millions of records. If I could sell millions of records I'd do it in a second. But I wouldn't call it Punk Rock. That's asking people to hate you. Neil Young is my favorite guitarist then second is Greg Ginn.
GReen day is one of the best bands on earth today. theres no band like them. and every band has to start somewhere. they started out in the punk scene but when they singed a record deal, there not selouts they just wanted to be succesful but i bet they dont give a f**k bout the fame. they lvoe there fans and would do anything for them. Rock on green day. you guys are the best.
A lot of people give Green Day shit for signing the record deal. But when you really think about it, it was the best thing they could've done. If a band really loves music, they should try to make a life out of it. And that's exactly what Green Day did.
Green Day isn't 100% punk-they have a big Alternative Rock Sound but to say they're not Punk at all isn't right-they are a punk rock/alternative rock band
lot's of punk legends can see it-Iggy Pop, The Ramones, Joan Jett, etc.
IF YOU DENY THAT GREENDAY WERE PUNK YOU NEED SHOT IF YOU SAY THEY ARE PUNK NOW YOU NEED SHOT NOW THEY ARE ROCKSTARS PUNK ROCK DOES NOT HAVE ROCKSTARS THEY HAVE BECONE TOO MAINSTREAM BUBBLEGUM POP JUST LIKE SOO MANY OTHER BANDS I STILL HOLD GREENDAY WERE AN AWESOME BAND AND THERE FIRST THREE ALBUMS WERE PUNK AS FUCK AND THEN DOOKIE CAME ALONG AFTER THAT THEY WENT DOWN HILL AND FOR 21ST CENTURY BREAKDOWN THEY FELL OFF THE CLIFF SO :( GREENDAY REST IN PEACE. the caps are deliberate by the way!!
@greenday01989 um, no mean to start a meaningless youtube fight, but they are still punk. And every ablum has to be diffrenent for them to be ood musicians. If you kept the EXACT same sound, it would be boring, but they are still punk. Well... thats my thought about you, you are intittled to whatever you believe.
@xxStrangeLabelxx hate them fights like but well obviously theyd gbet boring like but really there is a difference from changing sounds, good example of that is bad religeon and they remained good, but greenday changed for money and they have sold out to the big corporate gods!
green day was approached with a lot of offers BEFORE and they rejected all of them until they accepted reprise because their contract gave them full control over their image, sound, etc.
they don't control how popular they become or how many people buy their records, even when they were signed to lookout! records, kerplunk sold like 50,000 copies which is huge for an underground band.
People don't understand that if 21 Guns was on their first album or Kerplunk no one would think twice about it being different, they are still the same old punk guys who hung out and did drugs.
I find it pathetic that people label them as sell outs. Bands like Bad Religion, Rancid, The Ramones, and The Clash were/are all signed on major Labels, yet no one seems to criticize them as much as Green Day. Being involved in my local punk scene I do get a lot of shit for even Considering green day a decent band. Punks are so god damn cliquey, The point of Punk rock is to do what you want and not give a shit about the societies opinion, that's exactly what Green Day's Doing.
@WoahSavanna love the comment, makes alot of sense..im in a band and i like green day...but people keep tellin me "theyr not REAL punk" im like wtf! XD
@WoahSavanna hey buddy, The clash, Ramones, and Rancid never did stuff for money. The biggest show the Clash ever played was in front of 300,000 people. Green Day has played in front of twice that, id say theve sold out.
@kilduff32 They didn't. Have you seen them selling their souls? Or just because you don't like their music anymore gives you the right to call them names? How about me taking my right to call you an "dumb-ass", just by following your kinder-garden logistics and understanding of reality? If you don't think I'm right calling you in that way, you should know better about what you're thinking about Green Day. PS:Try making a good punk record. When you'll make it better than GD, then do w/e you wish!
@WoahSavanna You are that close to being perfectly right. But, what's missing is that you didn't mention that punks aren't usually smart people that can understand the concept of originality of new and diversity. And when you get an hole underground scene dominated by such simplistic view upon every kind of art, you can get results that vary from the response to The Offspring, blink 182, Sum 41 and Green Day. Initially, all of them were genuine punk revival bands, but time changed them for money
I can agree mostly with what you're saying, but I'm in my local punk scene and have to stick up for myself. we are smart, and original. Some of the most intelligent people I've ever met are punx. most of the punx I know are incredibly open minded when it comes to people, religion, and mostly music. without originality how would Op Ivy be able to mix such genres like Ska and Punk together?
All the true punx I know follow there own beliefs not others, that my friend is originality.
@slashsslayer97 It's great that you can say that you don't like their new music as much, and still you sound nice! I wish more people were like you :)
I'm probably (?) one of the teenage girls that are "drooling over billie" but in the first place I'm a big Green Day fan, because I love thier music! It was their new music that I fell for and it's still that music I love the most. But thanks to Green Day I've also discoverd punk, and I'm telling ya: IT'S AWESOME! :D
@WoahSavanna3:25 is why Punkers label them as 'not punk' but ya know, its their life. Just because you sign your name on a label doesn't mean you are no longer a punk

all the shitty critics saying they're sellouts anyone who's is in a band will know, that whatever music they write that sounds good to them and they enjoy playing, they will happilly keep it to show off, instead of going, no its not punk enough, and throwing it away, and put it this way if someone offered anyone a shit load of money and the oppotunity to play massive venues, we would cut the "noble" bullshit out and easily accept the offer

Again, sorry, it just fucking pisses me off.
Evica72 1 year ago
I truly think Green Day are not sellouts what so ever. They're just doing what they love to do, and that is making great punk rock. And if they make money in the process of doing what they love it's their buisness. If people the ones who think they're sellouts and don't like them period. like Billie said there's the ******* door. See ya later!

THAT is what makes me love them so much =)

bonfirejovi 1 year ago 2
@bonfirejovi I agree with you, but The Ramones actually never had a number one, in the US or the UK. In the US their highest charting single was "Rockaway Beach", #66 on the charts. In the US their highest charting album was "End of the Century" something like #44 on the charts.

Green Day redefined Punk the same way Nirvana redefined Grunge. Both bands each had their own style of alternative rock.
jaketheman091 1 year ago 71
@jaketheman091 Exactly. Most people assume that Green Day are posers just because a lot of their fans are young, they sold millions of records, they changed a little, and they're a mainstream 2010 band. If you look at the members' history you will see that they have been there 'n' done that. But people change, tastes change. Once you become a father and a husband, you need to take control of your priorities and do the best for your family. So guess what? Million dollar a day? Hell yeah!
n00bfayce 1 year ago 3
@n00bfayce Yeah dude. theyre considered "sellout"s, because even the most generic, young audience are solely moved by traits of the band, more so than their music. Green Day are just as important as other greats like Beatles, Led Zep, Beach Boys, or Greatful dead. Shouldnt whether you like grunge, dreampop, hair metal, speed metal, acoustic etc.
keep rockin!

Question: How did Nirvana redefine a genre of music that wasn't coined until they arrived.
joemeers92 8 months ago
@joemeers92 Because Grunge had actually existed in the NW since the beginning of the 80s. And the term was actually coined in the mid 80s. Only when the media picked up on it in 1991 did everyone say "OMG GRUNGE"
jaketheman091 8 months ago
@jaketheman091 well acually nirvana almost created grunge
jettsta2401 8 months ago
@jaketheman091 Nirvana did not redefined grunge, they invented grunge.
sonorama37 8 months ago
@sonorama37 Um, Nirvana was FAR from "inventing" grunge....they came out at the end of the 80s, while many bands of the genre (Soundgarden, Green River, and the Fastbacks) made a name WAY before they even existed.
jaketheman091 8 months ago
@jaketheman091 You compare grenday to Nirvana? I'm sorry for you you have no idea what punk rock is about and any true punk will say the same.I'm just watching this for kicks and laughs. Green Day are a POP band.
scumgod13 7 months ago
@scumgod13 If I told you that I have albums by JFA, Fugazi, Minor Threat, and Black Flag, AS WELL AS Green Day, is your mind blown? Seriously - I don't give a shit about what's "TRUE" punk rock, because I don't define myself in that way. I just appreciate any kind of rock music.
jaketheman091 7 months ago
@jaketheman091 Well, I do too I love all Genre's of music from country to hardcore. but I'm not the punk Rock purist selling millions of records. If I could sell millions of records I'd do it in a second. But I wouldn't call it Punk Rock. That's asking people to hate you. A lot of people give Green Day shit for signing the record deal. But when you really think about it, it was the best thing they could've done. If a band really loves music, they should try to make a life out of it. And that's exactly what Green Day did.

green day was approached with a lot of offers BEFORE and they rejected all of them until they accepted reprise because their contract gave them full control over their image, sound, etc.
they don't control how popular they become or how many people buy their records, even when they were signed to lookout! records, kerplunk sold like 50,000 copies which is huge for an underground band.
it's not their fault if they get popular.

@WoahSavanna hey buddy, The clash, Ramones, and Rancid never did stuff for money. The biggest show the Clash ever played was in front of 300,000 people. Green Day has played in front of twice that, id say theve sold out.
kilduff32 1 year ago
@kilduff32 They didn't. Have you seen them selling their souls? Or just because you don't like their music anymore gives you the right to call them names? How about me taking my right to call you an "dumb-ass", just by following your kinder-garden logistics and understanding of reality? If you don't think I'm right calling you in that way, you should know better about what you're thinking about Green Day. PS:Try making a good punk record. When you'll make it better than GD, then do w/e you wish!
dracidus10 1 year ago
@WoahSavanna You are that close to being perfectly right. But, what's missing is that you didn't mention that punks aren't usually smart people that can understand the concept of originality of new and diversity. And when you get an hole underground scene dominated by such simplistic view upon every kind of art, you can get results that vary from the response to The Offspring, blink 182, Sum 41 and Green Day. Initially, all of them were genuine punk revival bands, but time changed them for money
dracidus10 1 year ago
@dracidus10
