I wonder... What would the Sinclair C5 have been like as a recumbent tricycle relying on pedal power alone? Having no motor and no battery would have made it a lot lighter...
The presenter just echoed my thoughts: even though this was a terrible vehicle, you've got to give Sir Clive credit for seeing into the future. Can you imagine what would have happened if the C5 had caught on?
hey guys, i think clive sinclair is a legend, check out this bands song and video about him it's funny as hell! Just type in electric disorder into the youtube search window!
yes mr britas hahaha love the c5 and chris i want a c5 na to put a brushless engine in it and lipo batts bet it would fly as its main disadvantege was the weight of the battery and as for people not seeing you just get road rage and chase that sucker down lol would be a rite laugh ne1 no were i can get a c5
And people talking shit about the C5 are dicks as well.
Go out on the streets today and there are many OAPs out riding on vehicles that obviously would never have existed, were it not for the C5. Its ridiculous to act as if Sinclairs idea of a small electric car like this never became a reality.
You lose sight of what was around when it was first produced. You cant rate it in this time - if it really was junk people would not have bought it, and it would have been like the MSX, and even that was not junk - just less popular.
yeah I know - but I did not want people born post 1982 thinking it was a tub of crap. like I work with a guy 22 years old and never seen one !! I guess I'm getting old.......
@richardmaudsley77 Well - you have to factor in price when making a bold statment like that, having had most of the 8bit micro's at the time I would agree with you that the commodore 64 was a better machine all round - but it cost 3 times the price. The 64 was only really value for money two years after launch,.
@UmpaEG well it was always go big or go home in school. I've gone C64 to amiga and never left (running a 1200 as my work computer, considering an X1000 when they come out)
What was with the BBC micro anyway? Never seemed worth the cost to me.
hehheeh thanks for posting, we bought a c5 when it came out and it was immediately put in our (big) garage (on our farm)
the tyres are flat and the battery *must* be dead, it was *never* used, it has a sinclair letter in the boot with a *telex* number on it :D how 80s :))) any tips on restoration would be appreciated. It shares the garage with a 1978 e21 bmw 320 six cylinder with a genine 48k on the clock, another rare beast :D and other 80s rust buckets :
the sinclair c5 is so cool. I have one and love driving it about. I even got pulled over by the old bill, they took pictures of it and even asked for a go.
Yeah, it's way cool and engineered to the best possibilities of its time... yet, what's the point of this device? It seems like a simple bicycle covers all of the same usage scenarios, and a human powered delta trike can even be superior due to lower weight and more ergonomic engineering freedom.
A 24-volt motor and a modern Lithium-ion battery is all it needs to be fast enough to be terrifying.

Well it was not a commercial sucsess - but to it a flop is a little hard.
It was just ahead of its time.
