The wtc construction was basically a tube within a tube; the core with the elevators and the outer walls. They could blow the inner core and use the outer wall to screen the explosion. Obviously they would not use conventional demolition charges.

It makes sense the fire in the North Tower might've intensified upon the South Tower being hit....a lot of air rushed out of the building and easily could've fed the fire.
