Hey, Andy, I know you peruse online stuff. I wanted to know you have meant a lot to me for some 30 years now. There've been so many heartfelt encounters with your music, I could never thank you enough. Once I rode a train through Swindon, that maligned city where you live still, and I could not contain myself for joy at that thought that I was passing near you and your home. I love you, man! Thanks for all you've created. You have been a constant force in music, damn the charts!
it's like i remember big chunks of what i am or was when i hear this and other xtc songs...the best of all time...the king of rock! them and joe jackson-haha! and bob mould and sugar...forget about it...days of the new-that kid was brilliant-where'd he go,right?
To partially quote from earlier comments - a fine video - for a truely great song. I think Andy P stated that the single not being released was like having a stillborn child, it meant that much to them.
Wrapped In Grey-the lyric where the lyric goes "In others the canvas were dealt" has a Beach Boy esque vocal phrasing.. actually, lots of that in this song.
If anyone knows the chords please post them I have been trying to get someone to cough them up for years and I dont have the chops to figure them out on my own sadly
The message in this song makes you feel so warm, especially when you're let down by "the loveless ones", when you're appalled by the pretentious pessimisism and cynicism peddled by many artists or when you've forgetten that Art is essentially life-affirming.
Even some XTC fans are underrating Andy. Particularly when the lyrics are taken into account, he may really be the greatest songwriter in the pop history.
Hmmm.... inspirational montage of images, truly an antidote for us woken dreamers who refuse to buy the "world wrapped in grey". More power to you.. :-))
Holy CRAP, what a really excellent video! I mean, the song is brilliant, too, but WOW, this was just beautiful! If XTC ever finally releases a DVD of video's, this would be SUCH a cool one to include (even though it's not an official XTC video). NICE JOB, and THANKS!
Andy said that Gus Dudgeon (the producer) wanted to make them sound like Elton John ... well, he almost succeeded on this track (listen to the bridge); hoppefully, Brian Wilson influence was stronger ! lovely song, and video too.
Brilliant video! You did justice to a brilliant song. Andy IS truly a genius, truly the second generation John Lennon, and this song proves it! Thanks!!!!!
Hands down my favorite XTC track - unparalled song writing brilliance. This cut though in limited release actually made the KFOG playlist. I remember the DJ saying it had the best last 10 seconds of any pop song he had heard
OMGOODNESS I have never had anyone make me a video! THis is so cool, I laughed, I cried, I loved it! This was ammmmazing! Hip hip Horray! that was funny to see me in it 2. THANK YOU TIMES A MILLION! ~Kathleen

This is one of best records no one's ever heard of. A shame this could be featured in any advert or movie & I am sure it would gather interest

@rmk4362: YES! I've always said "Nonsuch" owes a great deal to the Beach Boys. My favorite album of all time.

Yes Mine, it's from XTC's great 1992 album, "Nonsuch" produced by Gus Dudgeon who was also Elton John's long time producer.

one of the most underrated songs of all time
If The Beatles had written it, it would have been huge.

I'm so used to listening to the whole album at a time that I instinctively start "Ugly underneath" in my head when WIG ends on that high note.

Yeah, ever since I heard them in places
both big and small in NYC, I always thought
of them as successors to the Beatles of
invention and experimentation (Tomorrow
Never Knows, not Long and Winding Road:>)
dwalkmusick 4 years ago
Their later years have a "Beatlesque"ness. But I just think their earlier stuff has manic thang that is central to appreciating what they're about.
flanissimo 4 years ago
Oh, yeah, exactly. I loved Andy doing his howls
and growls, always melodic but, as you say,
manic! Even early on, though, their voices sort
of paralleled the Beatles (Andy/John and Colin/Paul)
sort of blending soft with harsh voices in true
harmony. Speaking of which, a great deal of the
later stuff sounds to me a lot like Brian Wilson
& company, no?
