Vechz was asked about a really weird trap that the one who was interviewing him couldn't figure out how he did it, and Vechz wouldn't answer. So the interviewer went in MCEdit and looked at it and apparently, a Creeper spawned on a pressure plate when the player was near the spawner and would detonate.

It's smart, but I think the proximity detector is better in my opinion because you can build it where ever you want and now you just have to be lucky the spawner is in the place you want or you have to cheat to get it where you want it. And you can build the proximity detector anywhere you want and it works just as well as your player detector.
The trap would just never go off, with the current design, since the piston would push the mob immediately. Assuming you're not worried about size, the pushing piston would have to be on a delay. Additionally, there's room for the mob to fall before the peaceful sensor can be bypassed. There would also be more room for the mob to spawn, making every other mob not hit the button at all.
Hypothetically, you could use a pit, but a handful of issues would need to be fixed.
there is a way better way to do this, its a smoke detector (you only see it when also about 16 blocks away, infront of the smoke you put a PP with a arrow on it, when you come close the PP turns on
@biesotter That will always go off then, regardless of what difficulty you're on. The point of Ethos' sensor is to distinguish between peaceful and other modes. So, it only works when hostile mobs are enabled :)
@ethoslab your upload rate seems to be slowing we are lucky if we get half an hour a day. i know some youtubers that upload 2-3 lets play episodes a day. please step it up etho.
Nice work with this player sensor, I was just going to say you can make them legit! Check out my "StoneR's Arrow Detection Idea's" vid I did a few months back. You can achieve the same radius effect and my one can also detect if you leave the area and deactivate, only issue is that the "detection system" has to be activated with an arrow (from where the player can't here it being fired) and then will only remain active as long as the arrow is alive (1min) but that can be used too..

Player detector: 1. Place a block, put a redstone torch on this. 2. Place a redstone repeater going into the block, and make an inverter go into the torch. The torch should now be off. 3. Place a pressure plate. 4. Wire up redstone from the pressure plate to the inverter.
Now whenever a player steps on the pressure plate the redstone torch goes on... Yay... Now to watch the ACTUAL player detector...

you should have made a bud switch next to the spawner, so that when it lights up it activates the bud switch. or does that not work because the spawner is only a particle effect and not an actual block update?

@llamasorus What do you mean? All this does is determine if a player is in the vicinity and then sends a redstone signal. it would set up an exterior trap or function.
there's already a 16 block proximity sensor that exists. it's more reliable though as it's doesn't use a mob spawner. sethbling has a video of it, it's called "Giant, Self-Detonating Creeper in Minecraft". it's more reliable and smaller however it's more likely to get patched than yours is and it's not silent like yours.
Hey Etho - Cool design! I was wondering if instead of a pressure plate you hooked the monster spawned up to a BUD switch. Then whenever the spawner activates the switch will go on, and if/when the player leaves the area it will go off. I'm not sure if this works (haven't tested it) but if it does I reckon it'd be pretty useful! Anyway thanks for the awesome content!
@martinstumpf It is possible, although very unlikely unless most of your map is lit up in the area. You wouldn't have any problems if you used a cave spider spawner instead with only a 1x1x1 space for it to spawn, although you wouldn't be able to use a crusher on it.
@martinstumpf to fix that, use a blaze spawner, it stops spawning only from 14, so you could have light level 9 in your spawner and it would still spawn :D
how would u make this a trap because it can only fire a certain amount of tnt then its out and u cant refill it. only good way is lava but thats slow and sometimes unpredictable its good and all but unless u only want a one time only trap its pointless. may kill you the first time but wont work second time round. sorta like a sand trap.
@Jeandebilo Yep but you can't get things like mobspawner or the mushroom biome grass on creative mode. In Single Player Commands if you don't remember the name you will need to search for ID but it will be on TooManyItems.
The worst thing is, I would love to see Etho go through the map he's making and die all these times, and also avoid all these genius traps... But it wouldn't be fun since he is the maker of it... Who am I going to watch play through his map?!?

@ethoslab, just imagine using these so the traps only went off when people had finally managed to get their prize, and were on their way BACK. it would only take some pretty simple redstone to do so.

@ZombieSlayr800 Pretty much yes. Unless they turned off monsters on the server, which would render this useless on the Server that you play on.

@ethoslab, just imagine using these so the traps only went off when people had finally managed to get their prize, and were on their way BACK. it would only take some pretty simple redstone to do so.

@yinge101 It is simple because it is laid out for you. You never would have thought of something like this. If it is so simple, go create something extremely complex out of redstone and post it on Youtube.
