  • Keith plays 5 strings OPEN G and his genius is so ibtense that nobody can take a guitar with an open G today and NOT sound like the Stone haha gotta respect that old cat from black country england

  • yeah watch the concert at the apollo for chuck berry. Chuck wanted to modulate the key of the song they were playing and keef freaked big time. So yeah keef has played for 50 years and co wrote about 500 tunes, but he couldnt do a simple key modulation that most 2nd year guitar students could do.

  • maybe if keith richards was some what a good guitarist

  • sounds like dodgy music youd hear in a club played by 40yr old grandads

  • The way this man play Keef style is fantastic, music always win something new.

  • It's always kind of funny to see Eric's playin' style bash into something like Hendrix or Keith Richards, cause he always puts such a finasse to his technique, lol....

  • I think red is better than yellow.

  • I love it (8) =) and Eric johnson is GOD playing the guitar xD PD: There're better than he xDD

  • That was supposed to sound like Keith? Little more to it than just Open G. Or maybe less. Way too many frills on this. As the great Alexis Korner said, "A lot of the time, what you leave out is more important than what you put in."

  • @bigdubdavis This is not Open G. Check his hands if you dont believe me. It's not meant to be a copy of Keith Richards, just with his influences. EJ is EJ but here he shows a person he admires!

  • Keef has almost 50 years of great tunes to his name the man is a master songwriter and of immeasurable influence to possibly millions of guitarists including Eric Johnson so just chill out. I prefer Keiths style anyway thats not to say ej is bad in any way.

  • Keith Richards is a God and I love EJ too. It is very much like Eric to pick the style of a major contributor as part of his 'Art of Guitar' series. His taste is impeccable and he is very thorough in his analyses. I love all of EJ's videos.

  • Indeed, Eric Johnson is a fine and well rounded guitar player. His techniques and skills are well beyond those of Keith Richards. I enjoy Eric's work! That said, Eric Johnson, although a great player, cannot be compared to the great musicianship and songwriting of Keith Richards.

  • About as dirty as ive heard E Johnson(better) . Keith is the riffmaster and has a helluva songwriting catalog. EJ is too clean,Richards is nastier, everybody else rocks but keith rolls, thus his longevity

  • Can we stop squabbling about who is better and who is worse and enjoy the music? If you don't like it, just click on the red X in the upper right corner, ffs!

  • @Foodie88 bravo all players are great no bad ones just enjoy the music spot on

  • Weird listening to someone ‘playing Keith’s style’ and turning it into muzak.

Eric Johnson may be a big shot ‘guitarist’, but as a maker of music he isn’t fit to suck Keith’s old socks.

And before you ask: thirty years of playing guitar. I can do technical things Keith would never dream of doing. But neither I, nor Eric Johnson, nor most of the people slandering Keith on this thread, will ever hold a candle to him as a musician.

Some people need to develop their taste a little.

  • I don't understand how someone so great like Eric Johnson could do something in the style of someone miles below him in talent.

  • @ztbsk8er It's just because this is based on that well known Open G lick that Keith Richards used a lot. That isn't so bad, isn't it?

  • @Foodie88 No man not at all, but I was just trying to praise Eric Johnson for being such a great player compared to other classic guitarists.

  • @ztbsk8er Hehe well I agree, but Keith Richards isn't really a guitarist. At least not as Eric Johnson is, alongside Satriani, Vai, Timmons and Gilmour to name a few.

  • @Foodie88

keith is a great guitarist, albeit a rythm player.

  • @ztbsk8er keith richards is a great player they are great their is not all time great they are all great in diffrent ways i have rythem players who cant play a solo but can play better chords than lead players

    they all just great

  • @rogerthehat I don't know many people who are great lead players that are poor rhythm players or vise versa. It happens (maybe in the case of K Richards) but normally you either have a sense of rhythm or you don't and the ones that do tend to be good lead players also.

  • @rogerthehat thier a quite a few it shocked me they can play fast runs up and down the neck but when i comes to holding down the rythem some of them just fall flat when it comes to rythem

  • @ztbsk8er haha, shows wht this guy knows, lol.

  • @jcandstonesfollower Lmao are you saying that Eric Johnson isn't waayy more talented than Richards? Get your ears checked dude.

  • @ztbsk8er yes, thts exactly wht im saying, the human riff, the president of rock and roll. the face of guitar music, the best body of work, the most skill and technique exerted over the course of half a century. im pretty much saying tht, but u already knew tht, rit? wht ur refering to is his lead playing his talented showy guitarsmenship, tht ill agree too. more showy, more chances to see his lead fancy licks. they are very nice. but ill take keef any day. ;) keef is a guitar god.

  • @jcandstonesfollower Keith contributed to the Rolling Stones who are one of the most famous bands from the 1960's 70's era. That is all that I see him as. As a guitar player? Mehhh....

  • @ztbsk8er and jimi hendrix was jus a guy who liked making sounds with his guitar... when u take everything and diminish it down to its most basic concept, it gives no respect to the player really. jimi was much much more, and so was keef.

  • @jcandstonesfollower Lol dude I respect your opinions but personally I don't think Kieth Richards was any better than your average 40 year old dude working at a guitar shop. Sure he was a fraction of the rolling stones but I don't ever recall hearing any spectacular guitar work on any rolling stones album.

  • @ztbsk8er sympathy for the devil solo was him, along w the bass, it aint easy to play brown sugar, midnight rambler is as good as it gets to guitar riffs, yes i said riffs in tht song, lol. gimme shelter, both guitars, him.. ventalator blues man, bitch, cant u hear me knocking, all down the line, heart breaker, shattered, and the acoustic stuff, some of his solos, oh my gosh!! his tunings he played around w are epic. most 40 yr old dudes still cant figure out wht te guys doing.

  • @jcandstonesfollower Dude, do you even play guitar? Sympathy for the devil is as basic a guitar solo as it gets. Simple pentatonic scales and nothing really technical to the playing. He came up with a few cool sounding riffs (simple riffs with little complexity). He isn't a bad guitar player, but he is nothing special at all. That's just my opinion dude. What is spectacular/impressive guitar work to me? Check out John Mayer neon acoustic. Or SRV version of little wing. 2 examples of great play.

  • @ztbsk8er dude, the opening move, is epic. its all one picking motion ive seen from no one else. and not simple. at all. i know wht ur talkin about w SRV. dont get me wrong, i put him ahead of keith along w many others. an im gonna check out tht john mayer tune.

  • @jcandstonesfollower Tell me what you think of Neon. Pretty epic eh? Mayer's def a good player.

  • @ztbsk8er i saw it, it was pretty sick man. i know of john mayer, and have watched lots of his stuff. but ive never heard tht tune, great picking for sure... i put him and jack white at the top of todays best players for sure. great player.

  • @jcandstonesfollower Agreed, don't forget about my man derek trucks though. He is another great modern player.

  • @ztbsk8er yes. agreed.. his slide playing can be spectacular sometimes, jaw droping to say the least.

  • @ztbsk8er

Are you kidding me? "... miles below him in talent." Forget about the Bible of great songs Keith Richards has penned, there is no one great way to play the guitar. Clearly, you really don't know anything about guitar playing. "No, do it like this!"

I'd love to hear Mr. Johnson's reply to your inane comment. Get a clue.

  • @straysailor HAHA! "Bible of great songs keith richards has penned" That's a band effort. I'm not talking about who's in a more famous band, I'm talking about who's the more skilled guitar player. Eric Johnson is more skilled on a guitar in every way over Richards. Get a clue? I've been playing guitar for over 7 years and own several thousand dollars worth of guitars, clearly not because I don't have a clue.

  • @ztbsk8er

Wow, seven whole years? Y'know, you're right, what a dufus Eric Johnson is for giving Keith Richards guitar playing the time of day, although those timeless songs are fueled by guitar parts that were written by Richards - not Mick Jagger, not Charlie Watts, not Bill Wyman or any of the other members of that band.

  • @straysailor Right, he was a huge part of the BAND, but he's not a crazily skilled guitarist like Eric Johnson. And yes I've been playing 7 years. Started at 13 years old and I'm 20 now. My original comment may have sounded like I was bashing KR but I was more so trying to praise EJ. I'm not hating on him or anything.

  • @ztbsk8er You're justifying your ability to speak on music by how much money you spent on guitar gear? Apparently, you think you can buy credibility. Keith Richards and EJ can both make a $10 pawn shop Korean clone sound ten thousand times better than you ever will. Perhaps from the extremely narrow minded, juvenile perspective of technique, Johnson has more ability, but with regard to music, even EJ kneels at the temple of Keith Richards, and does so with humility and respect.

  • @jspartacus Haha you're a joke man. "Keith Richards and EJ can both make a $10 pawn shop Korean clone sound ten thousand times better than you ever will". You've never even heard me play guitar-We shall see about that. I won't argue with you any further over who the better guitarist is. Clearly it is Eric Johnson. I don't care what band Kieth Richards was in. I don't see what you're trying to say. Kieth has more musical knowledge than Eric? I think not my friend.

  • @ztbsk8er

It's clear that you don't understand. It will be more clear in your mind when you realize that music is not sport. No medal, no podium etc... It is obvious that EJ is giving tribute to KR in this tune. And I do appreciate it a lot (it's a surprise or me) ! Specially considering what you noticed: their (EJ & KR) different (opposite) approach of the guitar playing ... Tks Foodie88 fo posting.

  • @paravent We all have different perspectives of guitar playing and music. That is just my personal opinion.

  • @ztbsk8er how is this guy in any way shape or form miles above Keith Richards in talent. He is an amateur at best compared to Keith Richards.

  • @bwilks91 Wow, I'm so sick of responding to idiotic comments like this one. I won't even bother. Eric Johnson an amateur? Get a clue.

  • @bwilks91 Yes, get a clue dumbo.

  • sick
