I love BIll Walton's face. It's like he was thinking, "I''m really not that surprised that he did that. Everyone forgot about Larry Bird". Haha love it
Thomas saying Bird's an amazing talent, but would just be another good guy if he were black, doesn't make sense. Which is it, is he an amazing talent or is he just good? Or are all black players amazing talents? I watched them all, and Bird was great bc he was great. He's not considered better than Magic, during their primes it was the debate but in NBA history Magic rightly occupies a higher spot. Saying Bird was hyped bc he was white is ignorant. He was great, white or black.
@danegan3000 Magic does not rightfully occupy a higher spot. That is nonsense. Name one category Magic was better than Bird in?
shooting: Bird
3pt %: Bird
FT%: Bird
clutch: Bird
passing: Magic had more assists but Bird was more creative. I've seen Bird make passes that I don't think Magic could make. Magic had that baseball pass which Bird didn't but that is it.
Fast break: Magic
Rebounding: Bird
Steals: even
Championships: 5 to 3, but Bird had the 76ers and Pistons to get by.
@coffeecat73 I'm not talking about rankings in things like free throws, I'm talking about ranking the greatest players ever. Fact is almost all people (in the NBA or not) will have Magic higher, me included. I watched both guys' entire careers, rooted for Boston in the rivalry, but my eyes tell me Magic was just better. Not significantly, but better nonetheless. 1st half of 80's it was closer, but Magic pulled away later.
Oh my! The place is goin' CRAZY!!! Great announcer for one of the greatest plays of all time. Lambeer needed to stay in place or take one step to the ball & game over. Instead what does he do? Fades back. 5th grade mistake.
@cbaldwinjr You could say same thing about Magic and Kareem. Magic Johnson is considered greatest Lakers of all time, allthough Kareem played longer for Lakers, was instrumental for Lakers success and holds NBA career scoring record.
Magic is black, but he was equally glorified as Bird. I dont think its the case of Birds ''whiteness'', but because he was truelly a great player, who inspired people with his basketball skills and passion. Thomas and Rodman were just sour and racist losers.
Greatest play I ever saw. Watching with about 10 friends, they all fell face down when Detroit was given the ball. I watched stunned and then jumped around screaming when DJ layed it in. All of my friends couldn't understand until they saw the replay. Un-real.
Isiah Thomas whined like a little baby after that. Saying nasty stuff about how Bird had no talent. Well, obviously, basketball is also a smart man's game, and Bird is WAAAAAY smarter than that dumb a s s Thomas
@Brickkicker55 You're wrong. Isiah said "Bird's a great player, a tremendous talent. But I have to agree with Rodman...if he was black, he'd be just another guy." And that's true. Hell, why is Bird more revered than Magic when Magic has more rings, more Finals MVPs, as many reg season MVP's, more Finals appearances, and beat Bird head to head two out of three times in the Finals? Couldn't POSSIBLY be one guy was the white guy in a black league and the other guy was just another black guy?
@gogodopamine You're not getting the crux of what Thomas was saying. It was the REVERENCE of Bird and how all this hyperbolic greatness was heaped upon him, not his actual game. Bird was the best player in basketball, but his whiteness was the driving force behind all of that media adulatory being heaped upon him. Kareem had dominated and didn't get that kind of praise. Jerry Rice dominated in football and didn't get that kind of praise. Barry Bonds NEVER got that kind of praise even before...
@gogodopamine ...steroids. And since Bird wasn't exactly the most friendly and available quote, it wasn't because of his personality either. So again, the point stands. If Bird had been black, he would've been just another guy. But because he's white, he is elevated onto this plateau. I mean, even look in Boston. Bill Russell has 11 fucking championships, but it's Bird with Ted Williams and Bobby Orr in their so-called "Holy Trinity" of sports. Deflect all you want, but its the truth.
@cbaldwinjr Another guy in the hall of fame. I understand the lionization of a white player in a predominantly black sport, in a predominantly white country. What Thomas said was stupid and racist. As for Boston, we all know its history and reputation. Ask any sports fan in any sports bar in the country and they'll say that Jordan Ruth and Gretzky are the "trinity".
@gogodopamine But it's NOT. History has proven what he said was truth. Any white heavyweight makes headway, people fall over themselves to cover them. Gerry Cooney, Tommy Morrison, Joe Mesi even. Hell, you've even heard people asking "does the NBA need a white American superstar???". C'mon...he had the ball sac to tell the truth. He never said Bird was overrated or not a good ball player...he simply said what is clear to anyone with their eyes open. His being white made his coverage different.
@cbaldwinjr Your not telling the truth. Rodman clearly said Bird was over rated because he was white. When Thomas was asked about it he said he agreed with Rodman. If you want to keep it real then let's be honest about the things that were said. Some white people unfairly over glorify white sports players but not anymore than black people unfairly say that they are over rated. There is bullshit from both black people and white people. I personally think Bird was amazing...look at his stats.
@Brickkicker55 Oh yeah, that dumb stereotype that Bird was smarter than everyone is insidious and way off base. He was no smarter on the basketball court than Magic was. Or Jordan was. Bird was simply a fantastic basketball player. THE PROBLEM became the ridiculous propping of Bird above all the other great players in the league. Look at it now, LeBron doesn't get placed above Kobe or Dirk or Rose or Durant in terms of coverage...but Bird DID in the mid-80s. And yes, it was because he was white.
@cbaldwinjr You're an f'ing idiot. Bird was smarter than Jordan. That's why he never had a worse than 52 win season even as a cripple and Jordan was 0 for 5 in even getting a winning season w/o Pippen. Bird never even played with the athletes Magic did and he was at 3-3 in championships vs him before Bias died. Bird was smarter and that's why he swept Jordan's ass out of the playoffs both times. No, we don't think Bird is GOAT b/c he's white. You think Jordan is b/c your black. So STFU n GTFO.
@cbaldwinjr This conversation is a little silly. Bird was propped because he had a very unique style and had his own charisma, which is what really matters if you look at basketball as an art form, which I have experienced it to be when its played with the right guys (or gals). Larry had a classical beauty to his game, it was filled with subtlety and cunning and he was so confident. MJ is touted as the "greatest" player of all time and justly so, but he got alot from playing against Bird
u know what is weird y was thomas inbounding the ball wasn't that suppose to the big guys like rodman, laimbeer, or mahorn. Or Call TIMEOUT! That costed them the series
I never get tired of this. However, the only thing that tops this was actually seeing this happen live in 1987. It was just nuts. Impossible, Unlikely, Incredible. And I beleive no NBA arena was ever louder since.
The announcer was authentic, not easy to find these days where professional talking heads are preferred.
1. Why was DJ standing at the top of the key when they needed a steal or quick foul?
2. Why did Lambeer stand under the opposing basket and not come to the ball? Pass was not that terrible Lambeer comes to the ball and had better position to begin with.
bird set the whole play up. he sees the man cut underneath (:13) but poaches to the top of the key forcing the inbound to the baseline where he knows its going & has the jump on it.
I love BIll Walton's face. It's like he was thinking, "I''m really not that surprised that he did that. Everyone forgot about Larry Bird". Haha love it
