MMA is alright but any good martial artist needs a foundation, discipline, proper technique, etc. Any style of martial art (forms/kata) is where this foundation comes from. Also consider that not everyone becomes involved in martial arts to fight.
mma guys use what they use because that's what works best in that arena. there have been a few kung fu guys that tried their luck, and didn't do so hot. that isn't to say kung fu (or any other art) is useless however.
tma is alot more than just fighting though. so it takes a long time to get good at them. mma and other arts such as jkd...get down to business. the approach is really the biggest difference IMO
