  • Hi Sue.. its not been that easy for a while.. I’ve lost touch a little these last few months.. I shall soon catch up and drop you a longer note.. mike

  • Just looking down your list of songs and listening to some older posts....this one was GREAT! That smile would make any Dirty Old Town brighter! That's the smile that has been missing from your most recent songs. Hope to see it sooon.

    Love Sue xx

  • hi sue.. thank you so much.. yes its been a while since i have felt like playing songs .. maybe i should find a song about smiling?? Regards M:)

  • Ay up.

This is a Salford song. Ewan McColl was born in Glasgow. He moved to Salford as a lad and after acheiving some success as a folk singer changed his name from Harry Miller to Ewan McColl. He was a committed communist and gained his political influence from his father. He penned The Manchester Rambler as a a tribute to those on the Kinder Trespass of 1932. I met Benny Rothman in 1989. He led the trespass, and went to prison for his beliefs. Best wishes from Mossley, Lancashire.

  • Thanks MrBB for all that.. I didn't know any of this.. I knew he held views to the left although his songs were always balanced and observant.. he just sang and wrote about social reality as he saw it.. cheers M

  • wow cool version of the song, i love the song!!!

  • always makes me think of Manchester..

  • wow so nice !, I only knew the version from the pogues

  • this is close to E McColl's original.. great song.. cheers M

  • Very appealing rendition of this great song.

  • Thanks ray.

  • It's written by Ewan McColl (Kirstys dad) I believe and I've always thought it was about Newcastle. Anyway wherever it's about excellent rendition my friend.

  • Thanks classican, I've yet to write up my notes but your right, EMcColl did write it. He was born in Salford and lived in the Manchester area. Still the song can apply to any industrial town/city. M

  • It's about Manchester I think, although I stand to be corrected :-)
