well you don't necessarily need to learn japanese to play this game once you understand the style of gameplay its pretty much easy to play but if you want to understand the conversations between characters then you need to learn japanese if you are playing this just because of the gameplay then you dont need the japanese language

Well in the game you play as different characters from the game but most of the time you will be playing as light or L well when you are on kiras side when its time to kill someone at the end of game round you get to use the death note but you dont get to write any names lol
