Leaving history aside, it's indisputable that Islamic governments are intolerant. Charles 336 mentions Turkey as an exception. He forgets how the Turks naplamed the Greeks on Cyprus, and that the Turkish press is state-controlled. And Turkey has at least had a long history of involvement with the West. As for the rest of them....

We don't need more movies showing our culture negatively. I did not get offended with 300. but Satrapy has defenitely taken advantage of political situation in the world to sell her not vey well done autobiography. She is so insignificant that I see no reason why people should care about her life.
so why are you writing this? if you really think what you're saying you shouldn't even open this page. and then, why are you talking about 300? it was just a graphic novel. art, you know.
I was probably about the same age as her when all this happened. I too am writing a biography, so I wanted to see how someone else would tell the story. I thought she did a stand up job.
Plus, she is a friend of David Sedaris, and he's always promoted her.
To Sakimonk: There is no such thing as a moderate Muslim country. There never has been and there never will be. Name one that isn't run by NATO. Islam and democracy are incompatible. Democracy is liberty and Islam is submission, and never the twain shall meet.
That's not true ... once Islam was much more moderate than Christianity. And you could also say that democracy and Christianity are incompatible - things like that are nonsense.
It's not the Islam itself that surpresses people. There are always fundamentalistic guys who do things like that ... in every religion and culture. Many Muslim countries aren't as developed as our ones - or just don't get help from other countries -, that's the point why it's easier to surpress the people there. Not religion.
Look, I'm no fan of Islam, but that's REALLY over-simplified. The other people responding to you are right. The Moors in Spain and the Ottoman Turks for example were indeed far more open-minded than most contemporary Christians. And before we Westerners start disappearing too far up our own arses let us not forget that there are many fundamentalists in America that would dearly like to create a Christian theocracy in their own country.
It's funny that you mention the Moors and Turks, because both of those people were nomads with a history of taking other groups into their hordes. But in the course of time, as Islam worked its evil influence on them, both groups became what they are now, intolerant throat-cutters.
Sorry, but that's just not true. Think about the Middle Ages - the Turks (also the Arabs) had an Islamic culture for a long time and where much more open-minded than our Christian countries. Their knowledge and tolerance were much more developed. It's not their religion that rose the intolerance they now have to deal with.
Every religion carries the possibility to love and peace within - or to hate and war. Again: Just look at the history of Christianity. All this cruelty although Jesus told to love our enemies! So tell me: Can you blame religion?

i can't wait to see this tomorrow night! i read the books a couple of years ago and it's amazing to see it come to life like this. it looks incredible. :D
They are rebelling against an EXTREME form of Islam forced on them by an Ayatollah which is Shia anyway. In no way would it be the same if they were in a moderate Islamic country with a democratic system but there just isnt one and the closest you can get is Britian or America at least you dont get oppressed because of your religion there or to have it forced on you.

*sigh*?? :) you're funny. Of course it's being sung by a French but they don't always speak speak with such a weird accent....And sorry if i'm not good at speaking English I JUST wanted to answer a question.
