@mwgfghost your cousin's band has a lot higher quality equipment than Bob Dylan in 1973. I'm sure ur proud of your cousin and The Cheaters, but never in a million years will they ever perform a Bob Dylan song better than Bob Dylan.
I love Bob Dylan, and I'm quickly learning to love Old Crow.
Let us not forget that Bob Dylan has done his fair share of sampling other artists' work. The tradition he carried from the folk and blues music before him is being carried forward by groups like OCMS. Power to them.
@BeatClarinet he doesnt sample peoples music, he writes peoples music, he has created thousands of song for bands, he is truly an amazing artist he not very talented at singin , but he can play music like crazy and write it damn good too
Calm down people, Dylan wrote the chorus but left the song unfinished. I hate when people say OCMS stole this song, this song is an amazing collaboration between two musicians and i'm glad generations so far apart could write such a beautiful song
@facefullofgreatness well 'stealing' carries negative connotations but essentially thats what it is. not that theres anything wrong with it. heaps of artists do it and often improve the song
That's actually was originally coined by T.S. Eliot with poets instead of artists. If you ever read a few T.S. Eliot poems, you know they are excruiciating so i wouldn't put too much faith in that saying.
Wish Dylan had done MORE songs like this! OCMS does it great justice and well deserving to be co-writers because they added some nice lyrics that work perfectly within the songs theme and chorus!
Sounds to me like they used a whole hell of a lot more than just the chorus. Sounds like they did a more finished version of an already fairly complete Dylan idea.
Mr Dylan had a working idea. He had a chorus and pieces of verses. OCMS filled it in. The song is known and acknowledged as a collaboration. I would believe publishing companies have dealt with the financial issues. As to the creative side...where else did YOU hear this snippet? How deep a geek to Dylan would you have to be? Not me, that's for sure.
@RJCunningham This band Has TONS of good original content. It just shows how shallow your music tastes are to base an entire opinion of a band off of one song, that the call a collaboration with Bob Dylan. I don't know why you would say these things about them, Unless you've listened to Alabama High Test, and Methamphetamines (My 2 favorite songs from them). I suggest you give these songs a play, and come back with your new opinion :)
@danrichards23 it's from a bootleg. it' was unfinished. of course it's going to sound rough. sounds like there's just one mic in the room. both versions are great.
The only person whose opinion matters regarding OCMS is Bob Dylan's, and he was known to enjoy if not prefer other peoples' interpretations of his songs (Byrds cover of Mr. Tambourine Man, anyone?). It isn't like Dylan doesn't get his share of royalties from the song.
BTW, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid is just an amazing film.
There are several genres of music in which it is commonplace for an artist to sample a phrase of a well-known recording and use it as an element in a new composition. A well-known example includes the sample of Queen/David Bowie's "Under Pressure" (1981) in Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby" (1990)..
As a rule the artist doing the sampling alters the song so significantly that they can call it their own. OCMS's Wagon Wheel does not meet that criteria; they call it a collaboraton w/Dylan.
@recklessrea4454 Well not to mention that there is nothing illegal about doing a remake of someone else's song just so long as you pay the mechanical Fees. 9.1 cents per song/per cd.

Honestly, I am a huge dylan fan, and have seen him live three times, but if it weren't for old crow medicine show, we wouldn't even be having this conversation. When I first heard the song I thought, that reminds me of Dylan. When I found out the story behind it, i thought the whole thing was just really cool. Credit to Dylan and OCMS. Great song.
@imramblindad Dylan obviously left his mark on the songthe original verse is all DYlan as with the chorus. Bill BRoonzy wrote an instrumental bluegrass song featuring the chord progression Dylan used it in G major when A major was the original. OCMS late bought the tune from dylan for a percent gratuity of sales on their single. the chorus was meant for dylan and he can take this song to the next level u should watch Wagon Wheel performed by OCMS and DYlan in concert. DA BEST
@dnanalahcnap he didnt finish the song...it was just a scetch and Old Crow Medicine Show just used the Chorus you know rock me mama like a wagon wheel rock me mama any way you feel, and they finished it making it a great great cover
@goteggs1234 GAWWWWD ARE YOU IDIOT! OLD MEDICINE CROWZ COPYIED THIS FROM BOB DILAN! YOU ARE A MUZIC N00B! 2 THUMBZ DOWN I GAVE U!!! WTF!!! DEELETE UR UTUBE ACOUNT AND CANCEL UR INTERNETS!!!
@marginalization Dylan did a whole lot more for bringing traditional folk music to a larger audience than simply recording his rendition of "Man Of Constant Sorrow" on his debut. If you do a little research, you'll see that he changed the entire world of folk music. That said, you're missing the point entirely. I enjoy the music of both artists immensely. I think it's stupid to argue that one is a rip-off of the other, when the songs in question have very little in common.
@birdp1lot I'm very aware of the writing agreement between Dylan and Secor. That statement was made several months ago in regards to silly arguments as to whether or not Old Crow Medicine Show was ripping Bob Dylan off. If the writing agreement wasn't enough for people, maybe a simple analysis could help.
If imramblindad had a clue, or even if he could find one, he'd know that Seccor liked this so much he ASKED DYLAN'S permission to write verses and to use it as the chorus. DYLAN GAVE PERMISSION. Co-credit goes to both of them on Wagon Wheel. The "ramblin" flavor of the verses is VERY Dylanesque! A GREAT SONG loved my many!
@imramblindad you don't know shit *(surprise) dylan played another folk song arrangement that is amazing and pleasing to the masses (man of constant sorrow). I think you have a justin bieber record to spin... d*ck lover. These one hit wonders recorded it and it's popular, cool. I love this song and this band.
I dont know if this was touched on or not but from the last arguments i've noticed I thought i'd mention that this song technically is that of Bob Dylan and Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show. Dylan wrote the song but never finished it and Ketch Secor finished it and the publishing rights go to Dylan/Secor. So it's not really a cover, it's technically partially theres, all though i'd rather here Dylan sing it all.

First of all, Dylan's version and OCMS's melodies aren't the same. Plus, their chord progressions aren't even in the same key, let alone the same progression. Dylan played I-V-I-IV-I-V-IV-I in the verse, and I-V-vi-IV-I-V-IV-I in G major, while Old Crow plays I-V-vi-IV-I-V-IV-IV repeatedly in A major. The refrain remains the only thing that two songs have in common, really. Dylan claimed refrain came from Big Bill Broonzy . . . is Dylan a ripoff!? No. It's a folk music tradition. Stop arguing.
@imramblindad obviously dylan came up with the arrangement, ocms messed around with and played it the way they thought it sounded right to them. this is a normal practice in the music world, when you cover a song sometimes you switch some lyrics or play it in another key. you are definately right about dylan on the refrain though, like you said its a folk music tradition. dylan drifted around to fine tune his music ability, prolly picked up alot of stories and music from that time.
@georgiaswamper thats the difrence between a rendition and a cover, and its cool to see what other people can turn a song into, and i agree dylan would have alot of awesome stories from back in the day, cheers,
@imramblindad not saying you're wrong or anything... but OCMS did do a good GOOD cover in the feeling it was written in originally... against me! though? they just raped a good cover and made it popular... i used to love those guys and all i can say is FUCK them peoples!
@imramblindad Well, you can't really say that the refrain came from Broonzy's tune, the words aren't even the same and the tone of the songs are very different. But I totally agree with you. The beauty of folk music is that it is for everyone, it is to be shared and enjoyed by all. Dylan's a genius and OCMS did an amazing job as well. God bless folk!
"aren't even in the same key" : so what? key change means nothing
"not the same progression" : so OCMS throws in a minor 6th, big whoop.
OCMS wrote verses to Dylan's song, that's the bottom line. They took a great song and finished it (and theirs is great). But to say otherwise is stupid.
@mattwfox Hello, sir. This whole "Top Comment" thing takes my argument from almost a year ago completely out of context. Still, in Dylan's sketch of the song there are two separate harmonic ideas that create a verse and a chorus, as well as lyrics to at least one verse (though you can't really make them out). Secor's version only contains the chorus's progression, and none of the original verse idea. In this sense, OCMS didn't "finish" the song, but made their own based on its refrain.
not to sound like a douchebag, but in chord progressions, the 6th and 3rd can be used as substitutions for the tonic. 2nd and 4th follow the same pattern, and the 5th and 7th respectively. it gives it a different sound, but it's basically the same progression.
anyhow, this is cool to listen to as it inspired ocms's version, but i'm not gonna put it on my ipod or anything.
@n3r3m4c Well, yeah, but in that sense every chord is ambiguous. If you were to sit down at the piano and play iii-vii*-I-vi-I-vii*-vi and sing Wagon Wheel over it, it's going to sound stupid. Of course the vi is a substitution for the tonic. The primary difference I was noting was the resolution from the fourth to the tonic at the end of each phrase in Dylan's version that isn't there in Secor's. All I was saying a year ago is that they aren't the same song. Like you said, it inspired OCMS's.
@bovyj This is the kind of jackass 1+1=1.8 argument that I was complaining about in that ancient post that fuckin' youtube has apparently immortalized via the "like" button. Do you really think that on a label debut and a first single for a band, Old Crow Medicine Show was trying to pull some kind of fast one on its audience or something? What exactly makes an interpretation of a thirty-some year old sketch of a song that was listed as a collaborative effort between both parties a ripoff?
@imramblindad Well, it is a similar chord progression, the only reason its in different keys is because Old Crow capo'd the 2nd fret. I think Dylan did an E major instead of E minor during the progression, and he went back to G major after the C at the end of the bar.
@imramblindad The vi can be used as a replacement for I, so the progression is basically the same. Also, they key is negligible. Not hating on OCMS, I really like the song. Just wanted to point out that they are way more similar than you are making them out to be.
@tfkid You're quite right. The key is often simply down to just what suits the singer or perhaps what suits an accompanying instrument. It doesn't in itself change the song. Likeiwse changing a chord progression slightly is only about the arrangement. OCMS's is obviously the same song with verses inserted which themselves are based on the main tune though they do differ a bit.
@imramblindad lol, ignorant you are sir... dylan is the creator of Wagon Wheel, Kech was a big Dylan fan... and i like how you posted a bunch of non-sense to make yourself sound smart, both songs have very similar chord progressions, yet yes they are different... and actually, they used the exact same chords silly :)
I wouldn't call "Wagon Wheel" a collaboration...the melody and vocal inflection is a complete rip. The guy just put in his own words at the verse part, which is by far the easiest part of writing a song. The song is a hit because of its melody and chorus lines, which came 100% from Bob Dylan.
Not that big a deal because Dylan is credited, but if Old Crow had the conceit to even call the song a "collaboration" they would be dishonest people.
you are a jackass sir. first of all writing verses to a good song is just as, if not more, difficult as writing a good chorus. 2, the versus is Old Crow's version are just as amazing and catchy as the whole song. 3, they did credit Dylan. Your just looking for reasons to be indifferent. Besides, if they didn't they would have been sued.
I initially asked if in the description Malapersona meant to say "many years after that" instead of "many years before that". Then I realized I could be sounding like a jerk and thought I'd say it was a great song and THEN I accidentally removed my first comment. But yes, I meant this, it's a great song.
check out against me's version!

I think it's stupid to argue that one is a rip-off of the other, when the songs in question have very little in common.
imramblindad 1 year ago
@birdp1lot I'm very aware of the writing agreement between Dylan and Secor. That statement was made several months ago in regards to silly arguments as to whether or not Old Crow Medicine Show was ripping Bob Dylan off. If the writing agreement wasn't enough for people, maybe a simple analysis could help.
imramblindad 1 year ago
Either way this is awesome..where was this found?
lbru24 1 year ago
everyone is silly Dylan and Seccor are both great singer songr-writers and they get along so why cant you guys
tjemilo92 1 year ago
If imramblindad had a clue, or even if he could find one, he'd know that Seccor liked this so much he ASKED DYLAN'S permission to write verses and to use it as the chorus. DYLAN GAVE PERMISSION. Co-credit goes to both of them on Wagon Wheel. The "ramblin" flavor of the verses is VERY Dylanesque! A GREAT SONG loved my many!
Get over yourself!

Stop arguing.
imramblindad 1 year ago 77
@imramblindad Yeah, in today's world of music, it's pretty hard for most people to relate to the driving forces behind folk music.
hockeyplayer168 1 year ago
@imramblindad i strongly dislike you imramblindad.you should eat my fucking ass.
trevertowne 1 year ago
@imramblindad obviously dylan came up with the arrangement, ocms messed around with and played it the way they thought it sounded right to them. this is a normal practice in the music world, when you cover a song sometimes you switch some lyrics or play it in another key. you are definately right about dylan on the refrain though, like you said its a folk music tradition. dylan drifted around to fine tune his music ability, prolly picked up alot of stories and music from that time.
georgiaswamper 1 year ago
@georgiaswamper thats the difrence between a rendition and a cover, and its cool to see what other people can turn a song into, and i agree dylan would have alot of awesome stories from back in the day, cheers,

@imramblindad not saying you're wrong or anything... but OCMS did do a good GOOD cover in the feeling it was written in originally... against me! though? they just raped a good cover and made it popular... i used to love those guys and all i can say is FUCK them peoples!
riotingferret 1 year ago
@imramblindad that comment was just awesome.
davehallmusic 1 year ago
@imramblindad Well, you can't really say that the refrain came from Broonzy's tune, the words aren't even the same and the tone of the songs are very different. But I totally agree with you. The beauty of folk music is that it is for everyone, it is to be shared and enjoyed by all. Dylan's a genius and OCMS did an amazing job as well. God bless folk!
truhbaby 1 year ago
@imramblindad You're right the melodies are different...they stole that from Social Distortion's Prison Bound.

OCMS VERSION IS BETTER
Scott9740 1 year ago
@imramblindad
"aren't even in the same key" : so what? key change means nothing
"not the same progression" : so OCMS throws in a minor 6th, big whoop.
OCMS wrote verses to Dylan's song, that's the bottom line. They took a great song and finished it (and theirs is great). But to say otherwise is stupid.
mattwfox 9 months ago
@mattwfox Hello, sir. This whole "Top Comment" thing takes my argument from almost a year ago completely out of context. Still, in Dylan's sketch of the song there are two separate harmonic ideas that create a verse and a chorus, as well as lyrics to at least one verse (though you can't really make them out). Secor's version only contains the chorus's progression, and none of the original verse idea. In this sense, OCMS didn't "finish" the song, but made their own based on its refrain.
imramblindad 8 months ago
@imramblindad
not to sound like a douchebag, but in chord progressions, the 6th and 3rd can be used as substitutions for the tonic. 2nd and 4th follow the same pattern, and the 5th and 7th respectively. it gives it a different sound, but it's basically the same progression.
anyhow, this is cool to listen to as it inspired ocms's version, but i'm not gonna put it on my ipod or anything.
n3r3m4c 9 months ago
@n3r3m4c Well, yeah, but in that sense every chord is ambiguous. If you were to sit down at the piano and play iii-vii*-I-vi-I-vii*-vi and sing Wagon Wheel over it, it's going to sound stupid. Of course the vi is a substitution for the tonic. The primary difference I was noting was the resolution from the fourth to the tonic at the end of each phrase in Dylan's version that isn't there in Secor's. All I was saying a year ago is that they aren't the same song. Like you said, it inspired OCMS's.

@imramblindad
lol, nooooooo not obvious at aaaalll that OCMS's version is a ripoff. noooot obvious at aaaaaallll
you make me laugh, sir.
bovyj 9 months ago
@bovyj This is the kind of jackass 1+1=1.8 argument that I was complaining about in that ancient post that fuckin' youtube has apparently immortalized via the "like" button. Do you really think that on a label debut and a first single for a band, Old Crow Medicine Show was trying to pull some kind of fast one on its audience or something? What exactly makes an interpretation of a thirty-some year old sketch of a song that was listed as a collaborative effort between both parties a ripoff?
imramblindad 8 months ago
@imramblindad Well, it is a similar chord progression, the only reason its in different keys is because Old Crow capo'd the 2nd fret. I think Dylan did an E major instead of E minor during the progression, and he went back to G major after the C at the end of the bar.
BakerMassacre 8 months ago
@imramblindad ......... Right on !!
younwhosarmy 8 months ago
@imramblindad The vi can be used as a replacement for I, so the progression is basically the same. Also, they key is negligible. Not hating on OCMS, I really like the song. Just wanted to point out that they are way more similar than you are making them out to be.
tfkid 6 months ago
@tfkid You're quite right. The key is often simply down to just what suits the singer or perhaps what suits an accompanying instrument. It doesn't in itself change the song. Likeiwse changing a chord progression slightly is only about the arrangement. OCMS's is obviously the same song with verses inserted which themselves are based on the main tune though they do differ a bit.
gaconnochie 6 months ago
@imramblindad lol, ignorant you are sir... dylan is the creator of Wagon Wheel, Kech was a big Dylan fan... and i like how you posted a bunch of non-sense to make yourself sound smart, both songs have very similar chord progressions, yet yes they are different... and actually, they used the exact same chords silly :)

phenomenal track.. shame dylan couldnt complete it :(
ReRemixedLive 1 year ago
I wouldn't call "Wagon Wheel" a collaboration...the melody and vocal inflection is a complete rip. The guy just put in his own words at the verse part, which is by far the easiest part of writing a song. The song is a hit because of its melody and chorus lines, which came 100% from Bob Dylan.
Not that big a deal because Dylan is credited, but if Old Crow had the conceit to even call the song a "collaboration" they would be dishonest people.

@MisterAtoms
who gives a shit? both versions are great.
myfanniejigglesaboot 1 year ago
@MisterAtoms
you are a jackass sir. first of all writing verses to a good song is just as, if not more, difficult as writing a good chorus. 2, the versus is Old Crow's version are just as amazing and catchy as the whole song. 3, they did credit Dylan. Your just looking for reasons to be indifferent. Besides, if they didn't they would have been sued.
