The original was in G, but Giuditta Pasta (the first Norma) asked for it to be transposed down to F because that phrase with the accented high B's leading to the high C...it's a real killer, and even most sopranos cannot sing it as written, and also because Giuditta was more towards a mezzo soprano (though with a contralto chest voice and high notes up to high D or high Eb) so the lower key was better for her to keep the relaxed feeling of the aria.
exactly, it's all about where the piece lies in the voice. that is why I disagree with all of the cross-fach singing that many sopranos are so found of. most lyric sopranos can sing certain coloratura soprano roles, but it doesn't have the same effect. they sound like they're singing at the tip top of their range (and they are) when they're supposed to sound light and weightless like a true coloratura soprano can in that range
To me it seems like this song was written just for Joan Sutherland, certainly one of the best voices to sing it. She was one classy lady, but more than that her technique was flawless.
Magnificent!!! Finally a good rendition of Casta Diva. She is amazing, unbelievable.

Do you mean the TURNS?
Those 4 notes are indicated by the ~ sign. She sings them correctely, exactly where indicated.

This is really impressive, sung in the tone that Bellini originally wrote before he lowered it.
