The difference between POTC and LOTR is simple. Pirates was a franchise, designed to entertain and bring in money. It did both of these jobs excellently. Lord of the rings is a masterpiece, both the books and the movies. As far as the arts are concerned, there is no comparison between the two. They both, however, have excellent music scores.

LOTR was a Fantasy Epic, POTC was more of a Fantasy Comedy/Epic, with less emphasis on the Epic, though it was pretty awesome too. Still, there's not much comparison. POTC focused a lot on personal drama, LOTR was more of a worldwide climactic battle.
