I wonder if this was the gamemakers trying to put some kind of answer to the question regarding the first movie: 'How is it that Marty's parents don't recognize him as being the same Marty they met in 1955?'

Then again, there were no photos of the Marty they met way back then, and it can't be that easy to remember someone 30 years later whom you just knew for a couple days.
