i have no problem getting to roleplay in 4th edition, granted all the people i play with have been playing since the 80s almost but i never get told i cant do as i please within my characters personality and alignment

Ah, I fucked up. Perception is spot/listen, Insight is sense motives.

Skill challenges work. Also 4e has no less roleplay than any other edition, it just doesn't bog the edition down with countless rules on RP. Diplomacy, Intimidate, Bluff and perception(sense motives) are still used.
