At about 1:53, what is that electronic instrument emulating? Steel Drums, or something else?

It's a synth lead sound created for this piece by the guy playing it, Lance Saxerud - not really trying to emulate any acoustic instrument. If I remember correctly, it's a layered sound created on the E-Mu Extreme Lead sound module.
