Yeah, especially when a particular tune requires a lot of notes in sucession. Beautiful sound.... It's just that some of the notes clash when they overlap.
Beautiful sound! I think it would be much better if the player had more control over the amount of sustain... because of the long sustain duration some of the notes were clashing.
@DSlam Not sure I was clear with that. A lot of people play these with their hands, rather than mallets. It would be a skill you'd need to acquire, but I'm certain you can easily mute a ringing note by touching it with your hand. On the other hand, with a structure like this you're going to get sympathetic vibration; the more you play, the more the other notes are going to ring gently, and muting all of them would be hard.
Decent tone. Now you need to post a vid of someone playing something a little more interesting. Music choices on this were really not the best. You can show tone and decay with a simple scale. Let's here what the thing can do when played by a good musician.
Lovely sound, But can I ask - why are the keys arranged on opposite sides? Would it work as well if the notes were arranged in scale sequence in a clockwise manner C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C etc? I know this mirrors steel drum layout, but is there a technical reason for it?
if you play with sticks your sound is louder than without a sticks, but "hand playing" is real and nice. This drum is the miracle! Thanks from Russia, Kevin)
@pete5668 I bought a mini accordion for a trip, played it for 20hrs straight and it was awesome. my hang drum arrives at the end of the week, I can tell you how they go on trips if you want
I must gently disagree about a minor point however -- when I invented the hank drum, I had the hang drum in mind, not the steel drum.
"Intention" may not make a thing so, but I wanted something that played and was keyed like a hang. I love steel drums too, but my inspiration was the hang. The tongue concept is just as foreign to the steel drum as is is to the hang drum. Whatever their ancestry, you've got a nice thing going there! Keep on!!!
hi Dennis, just wanted to point out that tongues are not really foreign to the steel drum, these two were mixed together back in the 80s' when Denzil Fernandez invented the "bora steeldrum" which had so called "reeds" or tongues. they were used to produce an octave overtone to the fundamental note of the bora pan. :)
Nice drums. Great idea to make a chromatic double-tank drum. That will be my next project. You are dead right that the hank drum should be considered part of the steeldrum family. There's way too much emphasis on the Hang, when steelpans are the real grandaddy of them all

I can't see why you shouldn't mute the notes when you want to.

hank drum? cheap copy of the "hang"... no comparison to the beautiful, mystical and penetrating sound of the hang
