Even when gold was used as money, it was not a very good money because it was deemed to hazardous to carry on person, so people deposited in safes which led to fractional reserve banking. If we had a gold standard today, the same thing would happen because gold is too valuable to be held as real money, but people are too dishonest not to carry gold certificates without debasing the paper. A real solution is to let the marketplace decide on its own money.

yes but, the gold standard is more complicated than that. If the banks create to much unbacked paper the market notices and people demand redemption in metal. I read the book. That theory is great if you believe in a perfectly rational market.
