What happens when you are asleep is that monsters all still spawn throughout the night. When you wake up the next day, you might see creepers and spiders around the place, seeing as they don't burn up. Maybe some zombies/skeletons as well if they are in shade.

Also, when you wake up by a monster, it's because it spawned near enough to you and just attacked you. Lol. No nightmares. xD
