"They did everything they could..city and Department of Natural Resources workers put wet towels and poured water on the animals to try to keep them alive. They attempted to float the mammals back to the water on tarps but they were largely unresponsive and had to be euthanized...they couldn't swim very well, and two it basically was bait for sharks...
@tiffyme Not surprising. Beached whales and dolphins are usually sick or injured, which is why they strand in the first place. You can't just toss them back in the ocean; they usually strand again. If the underlying illness can't be treated and the animal won't recover, the only options are euthanasia and letting the animal bake to death in the sun.
We were there at 7a.m. and saw this exact whale, very very sad. Two men were trying to save it before the authorities FINALLY showed up. Seeing live nature in action isn't always a happy time.

On vacation in myrtle beach in 2006, my Mom spotted a whale the length of a truck at sunrise while standing on the balcony.

if they get too tired to surface they will drown. they arent fish, they are mammals. they need air.

whales (and dolphins/porpoises) are mammals which breathe air. if they arent able to surface to breath they WILL drown.
