Many years after the film was made, Fonda told the story of him and the Sergio Leone (director) meeting up right before filming started. How he (Fonda) had put in contacts to change his eye color so he looked like a villian. But Leone said--no way! Basically Leone told him that his piercing blue eyes (associated with kindness by many) was the key to stun the audience of his characters evilness in the killing of the family. His vision on how it would effect the audience was so very accurate!
@h2ofwlr I remember Henry explaining that Sergio said, "NO ! The key to this scene is; I want people gasping and saying Oh my God, that's Henry Fonda !"
the character of "Frank" in this movie was so shocking in this role at the time because actor "Henry Fonda" was known in film's in that day as the "good guy" character, that would be like watching Leonardo Dicaprio slaughter an entire clan of black slaves in a movie today.
oh yeah, that will happen in "Django Unchained". Tune in 2012. the movie will make history. not "Once upon a time in the west" history, but pretty damn close to a leone homage as you can get
@NeverAloneForever Hmm well the opening scene of IB had a very sergio leone feel to it, with the music, the tone etc. what scene in particular does he reference TGTBATU?.
Man, I'd love to have been in a US cinema when this movie came out and be stunned like everybody else. At the time, Henry Fonda had such a positive image and reputation that he was seen as the ultimate "good guy" by the american public. Apparently the audiences were shocked when they first saw him in this movie, whiping out an entire family without any mercy or remorse. This role was completely out of character for him - which was in fact the main reason why Leone wanted him to play Frank.
Once Upon A Time In The West is one of the greatest movies ever

@IngeniusSpliffwizard Y'know. The home invasion. The cinematic foreplay before the massacre. Loud horrid music playing. Like Lee Van Cleef's intro.
