I almost got one yesterday underneath a bridge I got him hooked on I think the side of the mouth, I think it was a 6 hook, we were going for sunnys, we got him up to our feet but we didn't know how to get him out of the water, would a net help??? or is there an easier way to pick it up?
A net could have been helpful but they tend to get caught up in them pretty bad. The smarter and easier way is to just grab them by the tail and be sure to hold them out away from your body. They have long and strong neck muscles but they can't get you if you hold them away from you by their tails. Good Luck!!
You cannot remove the hook without severely injuring the turtle. I would not really recommend a snapping turtle as a pet unless you were able to keep it outside in a very large enclosure, like an outdoor pond or lake environment. A box turtle would make a much better pet. Snapping turtles are very messy and grow very large. And like I said there is no way to get the hook out safely.
The thing is, if you're able to gently remove a smaller size hook from it's mouth then you still gotta worry about working near the snappers mouth. They are mean and doing something delicate near it's mouth is near impossible. It's sound to me like you really want one as a pet so I would recommend you just get yourself a wide-mouth net with a long pole and just try to scoop one up. Take a look at your area on google-earth and try to find nice long, wide, water-filled shallow ditches to hunt.
thanks for the info

youre doing it wrong there needs to be air so the trap should be at least 5 inches with space so they can come up and breath..they have lungs

Hey man does the depth of the water matter
LDHSgangsta 1 year ago
@LDHSgangsta shallow water is better. Anywhere from 6 inches to 3 feet is usually good...

i'm told by quite a few people that you wont get anything that tastes better than a snapping turtle

i heard you have to put floats on the trap so the trap floats and the turtle can breath?

what is the liter for? please reply
anidin22 2 years ago
the leader (not liter) is where you attach the hook and it's usually made of steel so that the turtle can't bite through it and escape.

okay but will the turtle die if you get the hook out of the turtle?
BryceTannerCooper 2 years ago
More than likely, yes. It's nearly impossible to remove a swallowed hook without tearing up the turtles throat pretty bad.
kepics 2 years ago
what if its not swallowed what if its just hung on its cheek, and where is the best places to catch them at like the conditions for best results
