The issue was resolved. Quickly after this issue came to light. the Parish President Gordon Burgess called for Keith Bardwell’s resignation. Within a month Bardwell resigned. Good to hear a local government acting quickly and positively against such outdated attitudes.

I just found this, and I agree with you. Where I'm from sometimes in high school mixed kids feel like they have to choose a race, but by college that pressure greatly eases. I thing because of high school cliques. I mean almost all teens won't to be popular. I went to three high schools and I noticed while other cliques weren't separated based on race the popular clique was. Many still do things seperately in many parts of the USA. If multiculturalism overall meant i'd be treated with respect and there was no hard feelings between many people/neighborly and low crime and good schools, I may consider such a place, but haven't really found it.

I just found this, and I agree with you. Where I'm from sometimes in high school mixed kids feel like they have to choose a race, but by college that pressure greatly eases. I thing because of high school cliques. I mean almost all teens won't to be popular. I went to three high schools and I noticed while other cliques weren't separated based on race the popular clique was. Probably because the white one was so prep and the black one was so "hood" (she says rolling her eyes).

People need to get their facts straight. A JOP does NOT issue a marriage license. He did NOT deny them a license. He recused himself from performing the ceremony which is his right to do. Do you have any Idea why incest is a bad idea? Because there is a high risk of the offspring having genetic issues, even when both parents are totally healthy. The more closely related people are the higher the chances of genetic mistakes in the offspring. Even young male lions have to leave their groups to other groups...the farther they go the better. Race mixing is genetically the best thing possible.You may argue about its social convenience, but not the genetic advantage.

I fully agree with you, He is a good person I do know him on a personal level that man has known me since i was an infant, He did do his job based on his morals and beliefs, If i was in that position i would not marry them either, I am NOT racist, I just dont believe in interracial relationships, do not give a damn what people think of me, i have a ton of black friends and they all know my beliefs and they are fine with it, because they know it does not affect our friendship,

Sorry, didn't want to sound like I really cared. Everyone forges their own problems..know one needs help finding trouble.. Interracial marriages have been going on for decades and aren't about to slow.. the point to this, is the decision not to marry this couple was his right to choose..remember, it's "American" to make personal choices ..a right your all about to loose very soon. You should respect his rights and the couple can get married anywhere and should be ready for negative behavior.

It's actually not his choice either. He, in this case, had no right to say that. He in fact broke the law. With his job comes some rights, yes, but in this case telling somebody he won't marry them because they are two different colors was not it. :)

I will say though, if they want to get married then that is their decision and yes he should have said something along the lines of I am sorry but i do not perform marriages anymore and then referred them to someone, i do agree the comment he made was very much rude as well as inprofessional. But just because someone does not believe in interracial relationships does not mean they are racist.

I am so sick of hearing all of yall, You dont even live here. Keith Bardwell is not a racist I have known that man and his family for 30 years. I also do not believe in interracial relations, i have tons of black friends myself. I personally would not date or marry a black man but that is my choice and that does not mean that i am racist either.

Are you really that thick? In 1967 Loving vs the state of Virginia, the United States Supreme Court, with a unanimous vote, that the Racial Integrity Act of 1924(that denied marriages of people from two different races) was unconstitutional, there fore illegal. So by denying a marriage license to an interracial couple, he broke the law. DJ should keep his personal thoughts out of the public arena.. because he is in the "marrying" business. However, he has every right to exercise his right to choose. No one should condemn him for his beliefs. His age indicates he's probably is a baby boomer, and in the late 40's their were many cartoons depicting blacks in a negative manner. To a small child it forms a belief systems that's hard to shed, he may not even know why he thinks the way he does. Blame the government, not ourselves !

Model good behavior is one answer. It may not be a priority in households that could care less about these issues. I find most of us don't want to associate with other races unless your educational level places you in a position that it's forced on you. I doubt very much that this couple will be allowed to sue a judge, get real.. here is an educated man a "lawyer's lawyer" who could bring a lot more legal action than this confused couple could possibly manage... they need to find someone else
