  • From the Master himself..very nice ! Just as much of a Genius like Brian Wilson in my opinion.

  • Is this the same guy who sang the Welcome Back Kotter theme?

  • Sadly, John is showing us how to play the song in the Key of C...he originally sang it in E but I think his voice isn't what it was back then. If you find the videos on them up here, you'll see what I mean

  • Well... tears are coming from my eyes.... where are my younger years!!!! How much we enjoyed with these guys!!! In Chile .. in the beach.... my friends playing soccer!!

  • Younger Generation is the best song he ever wrote but unfortunatly he will never play it again....:( He said since he had kids he refuses to play it but you would think that mabye he would say ok this song is something I wrote but it isnt how I really feel?

    Nah me either LOL

  • Holy crap!!! Did I really just get taught guitar by John Sebastian himself? SWEET!!! He's one of the true greats. :)

  • Genious, genious, genious...

  • ha Ha, I wonder how many people darted after the intro chord prog and didn't stick around for the triphammer being dropped.

  • As much as I enjoyed John's instructional on how to play this song on your own, I would LOVE to find a video that shows how to play the triplet run going on in the background of the original song... My band has two guitarists and I can play guitar as well so I think covering this song could be loads of fun if we could get more parts figured out than just the chords and main riff... This song still owns nonetheless though haha :D!!

  • You never know until you try.

  • I would really love to play guitar, but it looks really hard.

  • @benoit4reel Do it! The wonderful thing about guitar is that a simple chord or an easy single note line can sound beautiful and be satisfying. Yes, guitar playing can get very complicated and advanced, but, you can also find peace and healing in strumming some simple chords!

  • @benoit4reel Not really, I've been playing Since 1967 when I was 11 years old(I'm 55 Now,I'll be 56 On: 1/2/2012)!

  • Thanks John...great song and...oh hell...thanks

  • cool !

  • We saw you in San diego recently. Loved ever minute of it and wanted more. My sons will review this video and imitate the master as much as possible.

  • Still great stuff John, I kissed quite a few sweet girls to the Lovin' Spoonful tunes. You fellows played a huge role in Rock Music History. Best of life to you all.

  • You go WAY to fast and don't take enough time showing the picking. Slow down...even maters need a little time to catch on!

  • I love you John you are one of rockin rolls greatest! I love you, you have filled my life full of music and joy, thank you for that!

  • Interesting didactic video, I am sure it is great for young musicians. It also shows you how they made those hit records.

John Sebastian - one of the all time greats of American pop music, a great craftsman, yet somewhat under-appreciated by the general public.

  • What a fantastic songwriter and all around cool guy.

  • I never learned how to play a musical instrument in my life, but he makes it interesting and I might give this a try, and great song too I might add. ;)

  • I went to the original and picked it out..both great !!

  • I can't get that one chord on the 2nd fret. The one that looks like an A .I'm putting my first finger on the 2nd string/2nd fret...mid finger 2nd fret 5th string ...ring fingr 2nd fret 4th str.. pinky 3rd string&fret

  • This is one of my two favorites of John and his group. The oterone is "Do you believe in majic"

  • 1:20 - 1:22 lmao

  • Such a beautiful melody in this song over a simple chord progression. Fantastic.

  • Outstanding!!!!

  • he is great !

  • Espetacular a musicalidade de JS, simples e direta.

  • This is not only instructional, but also historical... kinda like a video history book.

  • Here's the deal. Have fun with the way John is explaining the chord structure, how he put it together. In the long run, simply learn the song if you want to. It's a classic song. Who cares how he explains it. His list of hits and the people he played with are more than impressive. Lovin' Spoonful, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, The Dead, Rita Coolege, Joe Cocker, Booker T, James Taylor, so many. Songs..Summer in the City, Nashville Cats, Darlin' Be Home Soon, and so many more......Just dig it.

  • John Sebastian looks like someone's granddad now. I suppose he probably is....

  • i fuckin love the guitar beat!

  • hunkyfunster. LOL. "that guy above" as you put it, wrote the song and several hundred others, many of which were million $ sellers. His group was "The Lovin Spoonfil". Thought maybe you'd like to know

  • it's starts on the Z chord then goes to H then L , just kidding lol, no, that guy above is right, it's C Em F G7, the F is just a normal C played with the F note, just need to hold down the fourth string with your little finger

  • LOL!, oh yeah, i know the guy on the video is thje lovingspoonful's frontman, when i said the guy above, i was referring to a post a guy had typed above me, and not the actual video, slight misunderstanding there, but it's funny lol

  • First three are as stated - the fourth chord is not a straight G nor a G7,

it is Fmaj7 shape with a bass note G on the 3rd fret of low E. When 3rd finger goes to that note it is replaced by little finger. Ok?

  • Dude are you sure about those 4 chords?

  • Can you or someone please post Welcome Back

from this same lesson? It used to be on

youtube, but now it's gone. It's just great hearing

the voicings and how rich it sounds with him

by himself, as it does here. Great!

  • What are the chords he plays starting at 0:57?

  • C - Em -F - G(7)

  • One of the best songs ever written.......

I listen to the original atleast once a week to remind me of what great music I encountered as young musician. It lives to this day. No tatoos. No one note rap. No garbage about filthy humans.. Simply...."You didn't have to be so nice. I would have liked you anyway." Thanks John...... Music pre Bullshit.

  • Sad but true.

  • best music is always the simplest

  • Way to keep on rocking!

  • Musical brilliance is John Sebastian.

Sun records soul & Classic Nashville cool.

A song painter who can zap us any play anytime with one stroke of his pen.

  • Take care of yourselves. And each other.

  • Johnny. You're a true musical genius!

  • Absolutely !!

  • Thanks for checking out this sample. It's a really great video. He teaches acoustic arrangements of his songs and shows some very cool songwriting tricks along the way. I'm a pretty seasoned player and gleaned some interesting things from the lesson.

  • Is this a "sample" of the lessons? For what seems like quite an easy song, I couldn't make out all the chords, and the picking was a bit fast. I'm sure the lessons for sale are alot better. Anyway, I've seen a couple of famous singer/songwriters on You tube, and I think its so cool of them to teach their own songs, like this great one. Thanks, John! Always loved your songs, going way back to the 60's!

  • I don't know of any other musical legend who does this. John Sebastian - brilliant and unsurpassed. Thanks for post from someone who can't play a note but does appreciate great music.

  • What are the chords?

  • what kind of guitar is he playing?

  • I believe it's a Collings sunburst with Gibson-style body. Collings makes beautiful instruments. If you ever have the chance to try one out, you should.

  • @homespuntapes there is a guy (tonedr) on youtube that plays an electric Collings guitar . It's a beauty. He does video lesson and coverswith his son plaing drums. Stuff like Bad Co. good lovin gone bad...etc.

  • what are the chords?

  • HELL all i know its a good song. I dont even know what the hell he talking about!!!! DA..

  • what a sneaky chord that F/G is! I always thought it was just a straight G!

  • This song is so well written, sometimes I wonder if JS even realizes its spiritual depth. The verse is hauntingly beautiful but with a plaintive quality. I assume Steve Boone is playing the wonderful elec piano part. This recording is like a warm bath.

  • I've heard a few times from pop artists like JS that the songs they write take on their own life. After a while, they kinda forget they're the one who wrote it, and can enjoy it like everyone else.

  • I thought it was really cool that john had explainations of chords in lovin spoonful songbooks he comes across as being very sincere

  • Incidently, that song was played so much in the 80's and fit the song style of the 80's that I actually thought it was new in the 80's.

    A timeless song.

  • Nice to get a guitar lesson from the man himself on his famous song.

  • John, where is your tie dye coat and sideburns? (he he) Hey, thanks very much!
