(nerd alert!) The drummer can be seen at 2:19. Hi-hats weren't invented til 1927 and weren't rally used much until the 30s. This inconsistency really took me out of the moment (not really, I'm just a music dork)
Ondrej Havelka + opso have a better sound quality than the orginal because of modern electronics recording. But also these Guys are really, really good. They may be better than some of the bands from the 20s
Let's face it, high audio fidelity is wonderful. Ray's orchestra would have sounded like this if recorded today. I think the Prague Orchestra channels them well. Here in the New York City area we have Vince Giordano and His Nighthawks playing every Monday and Tuesdays at the Hotel Edison as of late 2010.
I believe that around the point where the footage from "1900" comes in, the soundtrack changes from Ray Miller's old 78 to the modern recreation by The Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra. I have the CD that it comes from, and know the track very well.
@milanslezak2 Maybe because there are so many beautiful old pieces and don´t want them to be forgotten :-) A nebo se nenajde nikdo kdo by takové dokázal psát
Great clips Aaron1912! I personally prefer the modern re-creating bands. The people who, back in the day, danced on music of live bands heard that sound as well, not the cracked records we have left from that time.
Comparing them seems unfair, to me. You really can't beat the real thing if you're looking for authenticity. I don't think the soul of the sound can ever be reproduced. This recreation is very good, though and sounds more like you're actually in the club with the band and that's fun, too. I still vote for the real thing.
I like them both for different reasons. The first for being more easy going and swaying. But truth be told, there isn't anything rythmical or special that sets the old recording apart from any other 20's pop dance number.
I like the new because of the homage to the original piece of music; written clearly as a blues song and often performed that way. It's low down, stomp-like and portrays what I view as the original intention of the piece the best. Tasty-licks too!! Fun vid!
You Know, This Modern Re-Creation Sounds Like A Columbia Viva -Tonal Recording. It`s Peitty Darn Great.! Whos Orchestra Is It.?They Have It Doun To A P erfection. Most Of The Time, If You Are Watching A Documentry About The 1920s Or 30s They Play Music In The Background That Sounds Awful!!! I Love Boath Of These. Hard To Say . Thanks For Sharing.
I Prefer The Old Recordings. Most New Bands Sound Very Corny As HELL to Me. When They Try To Play 20s,30s Music. I Don`t Know Just What They Are Doing Wrong, Maybee To Much WA,WA and It Seems Thay Are Not Giving It The Gusto This Music Deserves. Altho This Modern Version Wasent Bad At All Most Are. My Ears Are Tuned to the 78 sound, Not Digital or HI,FI.
See and listen to -Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra- here on YT from -Charles Bridge- and I think Pavel Klikar is OK with old sound sitting by the river.
It's not easy to compare the 20s and the modern version of the song, because the first thing you notice is the quality of recording. So in the end, most people just pick the quality of the sound they like the most.
I'll bet you're talking about Vince Giordano's Nighthawks - they and Prague are right at the top of my list of today's trad jazz bands. In my opinion, it's impossible to say what is better - after all, we aren't able to hear the historical bands live/recorded cleanly, as we can hear the recreation bands. I adore both sounds - modern-day precision is wonderful, but so is the warm tone of an acoustic phonograph.
"In my opinion, it's impossible to say what is better"
Not for me--I believe the OPSO is the best by a mile--they seem to get all the arrangements perfect without any of what I call phony 50s-20s distractions. I was finally able to get their 1994 CD, which goes for a dear price when available!
I meant that it's impossible to say what's better - the original 78rpm recordings, or the modern recordings. I will say that OPSO does enormous justice to the arrangements - but if you read that I was comparing them to the Nighthawks, it's hard to agree that either is better by a mile, so to speak. Vince Giordano has put forth a great deal of effort to pay respect to these arrangements, and the Nighthawks as such play them as they were meant to be played - no 50s-esque trash in that group.
Oh yes! Vince and the Nighthawks are second to none! They are the first re-creationists (as opposed to re-evolutionists?) that I ever heard and they knocked me over with their accuracy and beauty!
Although I love OPSO (they are really great, plus they are from my hometown :)), I will always like more the original. Today's recreation have too much clean sound for me :)
Obviously, the original one! The vintage bands were at the same time accurate and free in their playing. The modern ones are in a way more dull, too strictly following the metronome and suffering from a lack of "respiration".
I also prefer the originals. While there are some very good re-creation/revival bands, such as Vince Giordano and His Nighthawks, they never quite recapture the spark of the bands from the 1920's. I was just listening to a nice stack of Harry Reser's band The Clicquot Eskimos earlier this afternoon, and I was just thinking that. They're gone, and they ain't comin' back.
I love the comparison and the dancing!

That's the pint of the video, comparing the classic Ray Miller version to the newer version.

The original is always better. The modern recreation never get the right sound; I think it comes from hearing every sound amplified.

I like the modern re-creations. It gives these classics new life with frequencies never before recorded. Allowing you to enjoy them that much more.

I always wonder why the modern big bands only play songs from the past, why can't they make new swing songs?

Actually - for once - a prefer the Prague mdern band... They seem to get it "right" which mostly these bands don't.
Except there is a VERY good American band, also on You-tube somewhere..
