  • I guess don't really think of it as "lesbian" but by Shug finally giving Celie the love she had been wanting all along. Shug's love for Celie was true unlike Misters no matter if it was a woman or a man.

  • She has such a cute laugh and smile :)

  • Cheesy smiles XD

  • Whoopi Goldberg did an awesome job as Celie. She looked so innocent.

  • is celie a lesbian...?

  • @jammyfuhtrue357 in the book they go further into Ms. Celie and Shugs relationship and yes they did have a relatiomship and the lived together after celie left albert but Shug left Ms. Celie for a younger man at the end but she sti;; came back eventually after he left her

  • Shug was bisexual. That's why Albert would get nervous every time she was around Celie, and after that song, he knew they were getting closer lol Celie, I think it was the idea someone loved her, that's what it was. Shug wasn't there to hurt her, or beat her, and looked deep inside her and saw for who Celie was. A person. That's what it was. I'm not gay, but understood the scene so well. Women, like Nettie, Sophia and Shug, treated Celie better than men did. And loved her better.

  • 3:31 PAUSE. Celie is beautiful :)

  • THEY HAVE TEETH WHITNERS BACK THEN??

  • @GleeFan26 That was soo fucked up of mr beating celie because she wasn't shug.If he wanted Shug he should have never been with Celie in the first place.I would have left mr and told him don't you ever talk to me again.

  • I've never read the book, but I heard that it goes further than just kissing between Shug and Celie. I do not believe for a second that it's "real" lesbianism. Just two women showing affection toward each other - that both are in need of love. It's hard to distinguish between the two, but it's possible.

  • i think celie never had a man's love in her life, never felt loved by mr or her father.. tht why she admired and loved shug till end sinc the day she saw in her in the picture

  • @mcflyrocks26 Honestly I think Shug felt sorry for Celie because of how Albert was treating her and that she felt nobbody loved her.But I think she looked past what was on the outside and looked on the inside and found her real beauty.

  • i think she was being her

  • why was shug kissing celie, is she gay

  • @AGpixar2000 in the book i believe they have an affair

  • @AGpixar2000 good question. is celie gay? she didnt seem to mind. I wonder if they had sex. I should prolly read the book

  • Shug's dad is so unforgiving! What a jerk! So childish! Why can't he be a man and forgive and love his daughter? I'm guessing he's PERFECT, never made a mistake in his life. looser! my dad is like that...GROW UP!

  • @sOnlight67 yeah mine too he tells u hes forgiving u and the next min he tell u how much he wish he never gave birth to you smh

  • Danny glover will shit on a bitch.

  • @solidsnakeBYTE88 In the book they had a lesbian thing going, she showed Celie about her sexuality and sex

  • was it her dad at 7:21?

  • @7shakeNbake yes

  • why are they kissing like??

  • Yes, Miss Celie sho got a purdy smile <3

  • In Love with Shug Aery!!

I wish she had kissed me and she was born in 1944 and still looks good..

    Better than young girls =)

I hope I meet a woman with a personality and smile like her..

She is a real woman and Whoopie Golberge was beautiful in this film!

  • aww =) she finally smiled

  • I Never understood why they were kissing :/

  • @AnniieMaye24 me either

  • They got some big ass teeth

  • She kisses her cause she doesnt know love :/

  • shug was showing celie what it feels like to be affectionate, thats why the kiss scene happend

  • @michelle19769

In the book they are lovers which is why many schools ban it.

  • Why couldn't she just go with shug when she had the chance ?

  • @pete1210able thats what I was thinking! But maybe she was just worried what life would be like and judging by the way she knows how to do things around the house then she must want to stay.?

  • get over YOURSELF EbClectic...........if not black or jewish,,,,why American?

  • Why did they have to put that lesbian part in it -_-

  • @shawnakay18 Well, you've obviously missed the point of it.

It doesn't matter that it's two women. It's about love, which should have no concern where gender is concerned. Celie has no one in her life who loves her and Shug wants to, if only for a few moments, make her feel truly loved.

  • @tetsuyayamatashi

I want to be loved by Shug Aery too =)

Thumbs up if you agree <3

  • @shawnakay18 It's a classic movie. If you don't like it, don't watch it.

  • @LonerGalore WTF does the fact that it's a classic movie have to do with the fact that I dont like the lesbian part?? Get real if I didn't like it then I wouldn't have watched it all the way to part 8. :@

  • @shawnakay18 You complained about a single part in a timeless film based on a book. I know that a lot of people don't like homosexuals, but this is a movie. You COULD have skipped past the scene, but all they did was kiss. I don't think it was sexual at all, but rather an intimate friendship they shared.

  • @LonerGalore I COULD have and I DID. I didn't say that I sat down to watch that part I just didn't see the point in putting that part in and some1 already replied to my comment and explained why it was put in it. So what's your point?

  • @shawnakay18 My point is that I'm going to ignore you after one more passive-aggressive comment about how I disagree with your argument, and wont admit that I might be wrong. Then I'm going to fume about it for a few minutes before absorbing myself into anime and/or Minecraft and sulk while listening to anime music. But after this finishes, I wont spare you another thought.

  • Thank you LalaLibre..... shout out from Malaysia / Thailand.

  • Shug kissed celie to show her she was really her friend and after that ceile just fell in love with her and wanted her all to her house

  • 5:12 <3 Her smile was so cute n funny!

  • @notmyeverything ha cant lie. i agree ...=)

  • is Celie's name pronounced CELL-EE or CEEL-EE?

  • @sweatersnug See-lee

  • I dont understand the lesbo thing either..Who wrote the book ?

  • @BibleJoker2Face just shut up you sound real stupid :/

  • @BibleJoker2Face Its called the color purple for a reason. at the beginning the were in a field of purple flowers & at the end when celie & nettie reunite there in a field of purple flowers. At the end of the movie she says she thinks it pisses God off when you walk through a field of purple flowers without noticing them. Its not hard to put 2 and 2 together to get the message it's trying to bring

  • 5:22 awww

  • I love the book better. I like how it expresses the sweet, romantic yet complicated love between Celie and Shug. In the movie it was just like a peck on the lips. Idk. It just didn't emphasize like the book did. The emphasis made it more deep.

  • So Shug claims to love Ceily but happy to use her to carry all the bags like a mule while she swans ahead with Mister?

  • damn if shug's father ever found out she had sex with a woman, he would NEVER forgive her xD

  • Goin to the toilet on ya!

  • @premadonna17 R.Kelly lol

  • Does anyone know what was wrong with Shug Avery! did she have some temporary sexually transmitted infection or something more serious..

  • now that's a real church when you can hear the footsteps on the floor. the good ole days.

  • Miss Ceily has a crush on u.

  • when i was little my dad would never let me see the after the bar fight scene. I know see why XDD

  • After facing a lifetime of abuse from men, its absolutely normal for Celie to pursue a lesbian relationship. Hell, she'd fall in love with anyone and anything that treated her like a person, and she found that in Shug. "He beat for not being you" what a line...

  • @somethingswicked i agree wit ya.

  • @somethingswicked in the book she hates men all together. It's a little harder to express that in a film

  • Do yo uwhy Steven Spileberg didn't get an oscar nominaton for best Director in the color purple

It's because he has shown a sort of a lesbien relationship between celie and Shug !

    That's why ;)

  • @fatizoo1000 so sad. this deserved an oscar.

  • @fatizoo1000 I dk, Natalie Portman Just won Best Actress for Black Swan, and in the movie, there is a make-out scene with Mila Kunis, and she still one..I do believe the movie was very underated at the time, He should have won, Oprah should have won best supporting actress. Think the movie was just looked over.. Had that been Oprah now, the movie, would have won hella oscars..lol

  • I love Whoopi in this! she is fantastic when she's in one of her comic roles, but this is just as amazing! Go Whoopi!

  • I just want to thank you for posting but I do think you should just prohibit anyone from making comments because there are many people who are racist and can't say anything positive. For all the racist people making comments, why are you watching this film? If you feel that strongly about watching African Americas on film then don't watch it. Watching something that better suits your needs.

  • miss cellie acts so dumb in this scene

  • @DarrenSanch How's it feel to sin against your Creator? Have no fear. There is ONE who created ALL mankind be they black, white, yellow, brown, or red. You will PERSONALLY have a time to tell Him to His face what exactly you think of His creation. By the way, your little comment has been recorded. Oh, and one more thing, sinner, REPENT and believe The Gospel! Because @ the rate you're going, you'll have your wish; all alone for eternity & not have to see ANYONE.

  • this juke joint jezebel

  • Ok... I just want to know... in the FILM... did Shug and Celie have sex?

  • @TheGothims Yes they had sex. I have the uncut version. Shug pulled out a strap-on dildo and went doggy style on Cellie for about an hour, then they did a muff to face "69." They had to edit it for the rating.

  • @AussieKen1972 You're lying.

  • She Sho SmilIn When SHe GEts That BuTTOn>>>LOL

  • miss whoopi goldberg is a powerful strong reader and powerful black woman just like me.

  • i love tbis ,man best black movie ever madE!!!!

  • @MIZZOUBABII

Black movie? The damn thing was made by Stephen Spielberg. That make it a Jewish movie now? Get over yourself. It is plainly one of the greatest movies ever. But it is NOT a Black or Jewish film.

    It´s an American film.

  • @EbClectic gtfo, its the actors who made this movie.

  • @Usox999

In my opinion most actors suck. To me it is always the director who makes a movie. IMO anyway.

  • @EbClectic whatever u say dude lol.

  • @EbClectic right on man

  • WHOOPI GOLDBERG IS ONE HANDSOME WOMAN...HAHAHA!!!!

  • Entense........XD

  • "He beat me for not being you" :( :( Aw, poor Celie.

  • @GleeFan26 how awful

  • I love yhis movie!!!

  • Whoopi has always been beutafull for sure, even now and shes like 60 probly

  • @brucekirk89 55 this Nov 13th

  • They were attracted to each other. The book is way better and more detailed than the movie, and it does go deeper into celie and shug relationship.

  • Does anyone know what the track Shug puts on at 2:34 is called? Been trying to track it down since I heard it in Doctor Parnassus.

Much obliged to the upload also. xx

  • 4:45 - God, I love that scene. So damn cute. <3

  • I don't think it was a lesbian kiss , i think it was a kiss to say i love you then my sister aswell cause it was prolonging from the song shug sang for celie at the juke joint ,because when nettie and celie carved their names into the tree at the start of the movie ,nettie kissed celie on the lips as the same a as shug kissed celie in this scene , So sisterly love i think would be the word , i don;t know how you'd take the scene

  • @kapiolanii i Understand where your coming from but if you read the book itll show that they had a little bit of a lesbian relationship going on

  • 5:14 smile is so cute. omg, who doesn't like this movie!?!?!?

i never understood but why don't Shug dad talk to her?

  • @naanydiaable her dad never talked to her because she's a 'sinner' basically she shamed him because of her singin and lifestyle but also the children she kept popping out from sleeping with on her travels

  • wheres celines friend gone

  • DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN lesbo scene....HAWT.

  • "You sound like he going to the toilet on you!"

  • wth!

  • ms ceily isn't ugly.

  • "He beat me for not being you" Chilling. I 4got about that part.

  • yes in the book anthe play they got it on big deal.

  • hottest lesbo scene of all time

  • 9:25 thats fucked up

  • so she seduced her into liking women?or did she already like women

  • @Cherrypop513 i believe in the book Celie is bisexual (cause she scared of a men) but the first person (nonNettie) that loved her (Shug) is a woman so that would make her a lesbian... i think

  • Raped by the man she thought was her daddy, married to a monster...the only love she received was from women so if Celie was a lesbian, that's not surprising. Hetero, straight....she wanted love and it just happen to come from first her sister and then Shug.

  • It's so heart-breaking when she can't make it in time to leave with her.

  • Celie is Lesbian, in the book Shug doesn't get married, rather upon her return she comes to live with Celie. The book explores their Lesbianism more than Spielberg could (I mean this DID come out in '85!). There's also a vid on here where Alice Walker (the Author) explains she created Celie with a lesbian/bisexual orientation.

I wish they would've explored their relationship more overtly in the film as they did in the book and do in the play.

  • @BertoV I'm glad they didn't....that's ENOUGH of that lesbo stuff right there.

  • @BertoV You're right film acts like homosexuality just puff started after Ellen came out... I mean even in Fried Green Tomatoes it's the same, they aren't lesbians just friends. Ruth got married and had a baby, but rasied him with her friend and she gave him Idgie's lastname.

  • I can relate to Shug's struggle with her dad. My father was a preacher. I waited til he was dead to do my shit though.

  • the one thing i dont realy understand is that shug is a lez O_o

  • it sounds good to me, no off sync, and celie has a nice smile =)

  • That kissing scene is beautiful - Miss Celie's first and only loving and caring kiss.

  • I'm imaging things or is there lesbian undertones between Celie or Shug? Or is it sisterly affection? It's not cleat what the relationship is about.....can anyone tell me? X

  • @MissOrchid12 well i think its just sisterly cuz in the book they said something about how shug was trying to show her what its like to feel beautiful and what real love is :)

  • @MissOrchid12

i think they r both lesbians but i dont think they r in a relationship in the movie

  • 0:10 I have a friend who reminds me of Celie. So shy and insecure but when you gets to know her you see a sweet, strong, humorous and kind-hearted person and you wonder how such a nice person can have such a lack of self-confidence.

  • @MissEsmeralda1988 I think its rly nice of u 2 say sum like this bout ur friend!

  • what the? did they do it after they kissed?

  • @MsJustSmile1995 Yeah, it's in the book.

What? is it wrong to feel something more than fear and submission?

Miss Celie had all the right to be pleased.

  • @maddoxx18 oh okay so they did.. and i didnt say anything was wrong, i was just asking if they did. why does everyone have to be critics to such simple questions?

  • ? the audio works good for me:)

  • don't worry about the sound, thank you so much for uploading it!!! =]]

  • Love this movie.

  • just keeps getting better

  • just go to megavideo to watch this part. The audio is in sync there. Then come back here to finish it.

  • Everytime i watch this part i still cant believe that Shug asks Celie if she minds if she sleep wit her husband! lol, wth??!!

  • @tbriana05 yeah, but Celie didn't love Mr., you saw it, he only married her because he couldn't marry Shug (Old Mr. won't allow it) and he needs someone to take care of his kids. Celie pretty much he took as his servant rather than wife, and Shug knows this.

  • i cant believe he made her carry all of that stuff

  • (whisper's along with the words) ^.^

  • and to barbarasprague, yes im pretty sure they did because Celie never felt that kind of affection before and Shug wanted to show her how nice it is and feels

  • yeaa i think there is just something wrong with the sound on this one

  • I'm sorry but, I've always wondered, did Shug have sex with Celie?

  • @barbarasprague who is shug ?

  • @barbarasprague yea they do...in the book its mentioned better.

  • was the sound lagging on this or was it just me?

  • the movie is good in it's own way, but the book is better as it is more detailed

  • this is a great movie! It's like having a sister all over again!! Poor Celie!!!...

  • is it slow like this with everyone?

  • Shug did not have sex with Squeak in the book! Shug was a very passionate woman and most likely bisexual. But Celie had never been aroused or learned desire so it was natural for her to need the affection and love that Shug gave her.

  • @ktscarlett66 why are talking about squeak ?

  • @ktscarlett66 Yes, But Celie did prefer the love and affection she felt towards Shug then towards Albert, and at the end she says that 'it makes her sad that women get pregnant'. Meaning she just doesnt understand why women bother to be with men..

  • In the novel it does suggest that they had a same-sex relationship -- but it doesn't necessarily mean they called their relationship a Lesbian one. What I think is so touching about the film, is how well acted it was. There were alot of deviations from the book, true, but it still was a fairly good adaptation.

  • they are not lesb. just think about it: A woman alone, who her first sex contact was with her father, then he gave her to albert like shit, what kind of love does she already learn? just her sister. after she left the onl one who give some love, was Shug. You get it.

  • what happened 2 shug & celie @ the end of the book?

  • does nettie ever come back

  • at the very end of the movie. mister ends up paying some money to immiragtion because the kids had been living in africa since they were very small.

  • sooo they were lezbos.....nothin wrong with that

  • This is when Celie realized she was attracted to women.

  • Thanks for posting this it is very inspiring

  • WHYY IS THE FREAKIN AUDIO OFFFFF

  • u could rent the movie, then u don't have to worry bout......lol.......Its FREE!!!!!! LalaLIbre doesn't have to hear this crap, be greatfull

  • yeah thank you afimearts. I stopped reacting to posts like this, since it's the only part where the audio is off and couldn't be helped.

  • No doubt thats why I made the comment, I take the time to post my own video's of shows i do sound for and performing basically advertise my business, and its damn long time, so to bitch to someone who wanted share a movie so rest of world can get it for free is no sense...I appreciated it and its one of the best quality version on YT, this movie is a classic and has a lot of back story to it. When Whoopi auditioned for this MJ was one of the main ppl sitting in on it watching a new star coming.

  • I think when Shug says, "you make it sound like he is going to the toilet on you" if so fucking funny, that kills me everytime!

  • why does Celie call her husband, "MR", what is up with that?!

  • Sign of respect. Plus, in the book he wasn't known by anything but "Mr_" for ages, until Shug came- it dehumanised him

  • She never knew his name. She was kept in abject isolation and servitude. Hard to imagine, society at the time was even more primitive and backwards then today where women were not educated and even then, considered second class citizens. Celie was Albert's pet, his toy. He probably considered more of his horse then his wife.

  • Well then why wasn't the other women in the movie so called "stupid". So maybe that era was no different from now. You can't change human character, only the events surrounding their character. Women and men haven't changed, only their scenarios have. Seems to me anyway.

    = )
