@blibble321 There are several triggers you have to hit before he'll tell you about his wife. Then you have to hit a few more before he opens up about Bitter Springs. He'll want to go to Bitter Springs and you finish the quest and upgrade his armor. By triggers, I mean some of them are like rescuing or killing the crucified NCR soldiers in Nelson or saving/losing the monorail. If you check out Valut Wiki and type in "I Forgot to Remember to Forget" it'll tell you all the triggers.

@blibble321 In reality, anyone strung up on a crucifix wouldn't recover, let alone limp back to camp. It could be one of those things where you couldn't save them so you had to kill them. Like he'd understand, relating it to what had to do with his own wife. What really triggers the last part for me is talking to Bitter Root at either Forlorn Hope or McCarran. He almost always wants to go to Bitter Springs after that.
