Most people will never master their native spoken language and if the Internet is of any indication, many barely grasp enough to convey coherent thought--our immersion learning lets us understand enough to survive and convey little more than our most essential thoughts and emotions, and for some people that is enough. However, only through thoughtful study, careful practice, and a thorough understanding of the rules can someone become a master linguist. Music is no different.
@Speer82 No, this was not because of God blessing him; it's because of hard work and dedication by Mr. Wooten. Don't take away from Mr. Wooten's accomplishments by suggesting his talent was simply given to him.
I learned drums by ear for like 5 years then I learned how to read.....reading came very naturally and quickly because I basically already knew it....Its important to develop the ear first.....playing by ear forces you to listen and feel
Amazing! Any guitar instruction video I have seen has 3 minutes of shredding at the beginning. I may have to get some of his DVDs and apply them to 6 string.
What he is basically saying is to try everything and don't be afraid to be wrong, then when you find something that is interesting to your ears, learn the theory and understand what you are doing .
Victor is one of the most profound musicians out there...im not even a huge fan of his playing(i think hes awesome but im not going to model my playing after him) BUT he is the ONLY well known musician i know that can REALLY teach in way that is so humble and with such a positive force it goes beyond bass and beyond music for that matter...think of marcus miller and les claypool and any other slap monster you can think of, awesome bassists right??? But do you see any videos like this from them?
I love how he approaches music, cos I play by ear, don't know mixo from phrygian, just luv jamming to the music I heard from CDs since my teens.. it's still how I play. From emotions and the energy you want to release out there. :)
he could be a hypnotherapist with that voice...

Very true of improvisational music .... still valid, but less so for classical.

When I started on my sax I learned all my fave tunes, and got a feel for it, then I learnt the scales. I love it.
