I used to hear this when I was a kid on WTMA (now a talk station) in Charleston SC. Someone mentioned the Brits and their "Northern Soul" movement regarding obscure R&B from the classic pre-synthesizer golden age. Here in the Southeastern US, we call it "Beach Music." Whaever you call it, it's music that makes you feel good to be alive.
I'm sure I saw his murder on T.V. as a documentry, and his wife murdered Tony and hid his body for years. Out of respect I won't say where. I think it was an unsolved mystery type show.
@medusa7ful What's going on folks! The lower bottom was popping then, social hour at Defemery Park, talent shows, none of this foolish drug related stuff was going on-Mickey Moore (who now has a church on 14th and Peralta) and Felix (not glamorizing the dope game) real pimps (Frank Hightower and others) the Continental Club on 12th street where the Temptations, Smokey Robinsonand the Miracles, the Dells, Jackie Wilson, and other top groups and singers performed and mingled with the people. Wow
@truth1disciple What's up Truth! Okay! When the Tempts came to the Continental Club, we lived a few blocks up near Peralta, I never seen so many cars parked. People were asking to use driveways to get to the show! I miss those days. : D
us Brits love this stuff,we call it Northern Soul.We still play this tune at allnighters across the uk.This tune is one of the first American import records i bought, landslide is another top tune always gets the dance floor buzzing.............long live SOUL
on behalf of the family thanks for all the comments now i dont know who exactly wrote the post and i dont know how someone in the family might feel about the first post its kinda blunt and sounds brutal but thanks for all of the nice comments about the contents of the music but please realise their are real people behind the scenes that might be mourning their parents or sister or brothers or grand parents deaths and are trying to cope with it
they shouldve reopened who really killed Tony Clarke and his wife too who was killed years later, the man didnt have to died gone too soon like other black artists who died and gone too soon
if Tony Clarke along with Dobie Gray, Deon Jackson,Gino Washington,George Clinton wouldve joined Motown they wouldve had a competition against the top male stars of Motown like Marvin ,Smokey and Stevie.and Babara Lewis and Jackie Ross wouldve butted heads with the females stars of Motown Mary Wells,Diana Ross,Brenda Holloway,Kim Weston,Martha Reeves these artist who are non Motown sound like they from Motown
@brookscsea what was Tony like? If he was anything like D. Ruffin, I guess he was pretty wild, but he is a extremely unsung and talented. I've read about Billy Davis. He was a gifted, talented man. I hear he was a cool guy.
Excellent post. I really didn't know what Tony Clarke looked like. Always did like this song from 1965. It's a shame he didn't have a CHESS full of other hits.

Truth be told there were so many performers from our community who were Giants but due to complexion and connection and the way of the world they never really got their due, but thanx to 45 records, you-tube our great secrets are being revealed to the world. Entertainment is something our community never had to search for it have always been there for us. As Arlester Christian AkA Dyke from Dyke and the Blazers sang We Got More Soul.
Tony Clarke also had a few other hits like, Woman, Love And A Man. But even if he never cut another record, The Entertainer is more than enough to ensure his legacy as one of Northern Soul's absolute masters. He is greatly missed.
I first heard this on XM,,on channel 60,,and was INSTANTLY hooked.Thank you so much for posting this. He would have went on to have many more years if he hadn;t been killed. The organ in this is awesome,,adds so much to the song.I listen to this at least once a week. Tony Clarke HAD the voice,,just like Marvin gaye,,and so many other soul singers that should still be with us. Thank you SO much for posting this B&W video of him. What show was this on????
REAL music back. Fingerpopping and everything. Although I was a young girl ( that black and white film gives it away), I loved this song. Sadness beneath the surface, I can relate then and now.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS! I love his voice, shame he was taken from us to soon, he could have been one of the great male soul singers. I've tried to find this on cd but no hope. Does anyone know how he passed away?
It is said his wife shot him after he beat her (women didn't play back then) but some believe another man was in the house and shot him. His wife was brutally killed in Detroit a few years later. He had the looks, voice, and songs. He wrote songs for Etta James, David Ruffin. He did a lot for a short life. He was from Detroit, I often wonder how his career would have turned out if he went with Motown. To me he's already great, The Entertainer alone is great. His cd displays his work greatly.
@rhythmbluessoul I know I am late but thanks for that information. I was about to search to see if my man was still alive. I saw him at the Regal Theater as a teenager and he was the "Hearthrob" type and we really loved him here in Chicago. Kind of Jackie Wilson looks, cute moves. I am so sorry to hear he's gone. Peace and thanks again.
@9876543217303 You know now that you all mention it, he do kind of resemble Jackie Wilson. Both were from Detroit too and worked with some of the same people.
@MusicandDancing4Ever Sure did and thanks.....I thought I was the only one that noticed that. He had that little sexy swag about himself, similar to Jackie. Both were awesome men who were not from Motown.....everybody from Detroit wasn't. Like Little Willie John was good friends with Barry Gordy as a young man but didn't get with Motown, but I think Willie's sister Mable did for a while. Tony was writing music too. These guys left us too soon. I wanted more of them ; )
@MusicandDancing4Ever Absolutely not. It's like Berry and Jackie Wilson were golden glove winners and were friends during their youth too, it was assumed that Jackie would be with Motown too but he wasn't. I forgot Mr. Wilson's labels that he worked on with Lonely Tear Drops. Motown is cool but we had soooo many musical geniuses that set the bar for me that it seems unfair to only identify Motown as the music of my generation. Oh it's was good but not end-all. Just different...:D
he looks like Etta James.. thats's so odd that he was killed. That really sucks seems like so many entertainers are killed this guy, the sexual healing dude. hendrix.. Wow he was talented.
Tony Clarke was my friend in Los Angeles in the early seventies. He even stayed at my apartment for awhile. An entriguing fellow. But I miss his craziness. Great to see this video.
