So I think comparing the positive and the negative aspects, I think the negative ones are more harmful. Violence can ruin child's attitude and it could not be omitted for years comparing with the loves for books that could be easily distracted by friends, technology, etc. So Matilda is VERY FAR FROM COULD BE CALLED an educated kids movies.
I only review Matilda's movie. first of all, it depicts a child that is somewhat much higher in intelligence and also naturely loves books, it is very educated, it is a REAL KIDS MOVIES intended for the kids to increase their life's quality, but later, it tells about the telekinesis, which is never proved scientifically, and the worse, the very horrible violence by a teacher, incl, hitting, throwing, beating, insulting, knocking, etc, is very harmful, it will make children become agressor. sorry
When I was a child, Dahl inspired me to become a writer. Over ten years later, to become a bestselling author is my dream, and now, I'm flirting with the idea of scriptwriting ^_^
Wow....this...just...AWESOME!! Matilda is one of my favorite movies! Yes, that's stupid but hey I'm 14...not to mention that it has a real nostalgic value for me. Although if I can just say one thing, I think Matilda acting like an idiot makes her more human :P
Wow, this film stars the little girl from Mrs. Doubtfire, Aunt Marge from the third Harry Potter movie, Carla from Cheers, Pee Wee Herman and Danny Devito.
For me, I did not like the movie. I found it annoying how it protrayed the adults as thoroughly corrupt caricatures whose faces constantly filled the entire screen. It seemed to send the message that adults are jerks. I did not like Matilda's powers, or rather the lack of explaination for her powers, & I also thought Matilda was a bit of a brat and hardly relatable.
But then I have not read the book, and it seems that you benefited from reading it first.
As a fan of children's literature, and Nesbit and Dahl especially, your comment about Dahl being the father of modern children's literature seemed really odd. Have you ever read any Nesbit? The modern tradition started way before Dahl, with probably Nesbit first, and Blyton following.
@laddiebuck12 I have not. I name Dahl because he's the one that a lot of modern children's authors seem to reference as their inspiration for writing, not because he's exclusive in the way he writes, or even because he was the first to do so.
@bandgeek8408 Fair enough. If you read or listen to what Rowling says, she tends to mention Nesbit and not Dahl -- the comparisons to Dahl are by critics, from what I can tell. No idea about the others, Rowling is the only (post-1990) modern children's author I've read.
Ya-- yu DID do a great job describing both... And yuu were right; the antagonists in the movie were MUCH better... :) however, I think the antagonist in the movie is also better... Simply because, she's more realistic.. In my opinion... :)
Personally, I find that almost (if not always) books are much better than the movies, and I say much better because it's not just a tiny bit better, it's noticeably better. But then again, this is just my opinion. For example, I always feel more immersed in Harry Potter books than their movie counter-parts. Also the book feels much more, alive? But, as I said before, this is just my opinion. I'm stating "my opinion" a lot as to avoid conflict that someone will probably bring about.
@StrGrlOllie oh, I would research that though, because there has to be some laws concerning it, I mean what if someone said that they were doing a review than played the whole movie and then talked about it for like two sentances. wouldnt that technically still be a review? they have got to have thought of loopholes like that
Wow :) I see what you mean about lots of editing! Bravo :) I do agree with Jethro - both Matt and Matt-with-hat seem to be intelligent guys who give a well-rounded opinion of the book and movie, and the back-and-forth did feel a little distracting at times. However, you rock at insightful analysis, still loving the concept, and totally confident the balance will be there within a few videos :)
In this review, I found myself a little lost between the back-and-forth between you and movie-balanced-you. It seemed like both Matts were discussing merits and disadvantages of the book and movie, and it was hard to follow who was talking about which.
Maybe a little less bickering between you and movie-balanced-you? : )
@IJethrobot Yeah, I actually found myself getting lost a little during editing, which is never a good sign. It doesn't help that we both have similar sounding voices. =) I guess I could try to bicker with him less, but he's just so darn snotty! =P
Hmm yeah... though her ability to strategize does indicate a higher level of cognitive maturity and quite possibly intelligence, impulsivity does not necessarily indicate lower intelligence. In fact, as far as I know, they're not directly related. I do agree that movie Matilda is less intelligent, but this is due to the fact that she appears to lack the level common sense someone at her age should have, not because she's impulsive.
@Christi543 This page was still open on my computer when I woke up, and I just read my comment. Sorry, the school psychologist in me felt like defending all of those poor impulsive kids who are perfectly intelligent. This was a great video, though, and I am looking forward to the next one! :)
@Christi543 That's basically what I meant, but I guess I should have been clearer. I didn't mean that Matilda is dumber BECAUSE she's impulsive, but that she's dumber because she lets her impulsiveness lead her to do stupid things. And Matilda's still very intelligent in the movie . . . just not as intelligent as she is in the book.
@TravelJoe2010 Yeah, he does tend to mock things more than analyze them. =) His Old vs. New series (upon which this is based) is a little more analytical, though.
@bandgeek8408 So you're a fan of the Nostalgia Critic, huh? Have you ever thought of trying out for a spot on his website? I think you'd fit in there really well.
@StrGrlOllie I didn't actually talk about that in this review, but I did notice it, and it kind of bothered me as well. The whole movie is just more power-oriented in general, but since it's a movie rather than a book, that's a pretty easy way to make it more visually interesting.
@StrGrlOllie I don't see it that way. It's not effortless at the beginning. The tipping the glass was by chance in both, and in the movie she found she couldn't do it again, while in the book she easily did it the second time.
I vividly remember enjoying both the book and movie versions of Matilda as a child. I'm generally prejudiced against movie versions of books but always thought that Matilda was reasonably well done. I like you comparing the main characters of each version. Looking forward to part 2!

I remember watching the movie after reading the book, and being very annoyed.
In the books, it took her a long time and a lot of practice to start being able to use her powers somewhat well.
In the movie, it's completely effortless. Almost to the point of being really annoying.
