From DVD: “Woody Herman and His Swingin' Herd 1964”
(TV/Montreal, Canada/1-2-1964, 50mins B&W)

Thanks for posting this. Simply marvelous. What talent!! Does anyone have Woody's song: Maggie Mae or A Stone Called Person? They're from the 70's & I can't recall the album title. I had them on 8 track, but can't find them anywhere. Thanks again.
Trombones from left to right are Kenny Wenzel, Phil Wilson & Henry Southall. Trumpets from left to right are Billy Hunt, the late Danny Nolan & Bill Chase. The other two trumpet players (though I'm not sure could be Gerry Lamy and Paul Fontaine.
this is why i love being in jazz band!! I played next to Billy hunt when i was a freshman 3 years ago and now I'm a senior.. My Jazz director is friends with Billy and plays with him. He's sending me 3 of his personal trumpets to play on and possibly buy.. This is so incredible seeing him and hearing him play
murnien is right on about Billy Hunt playing like Don Fagerquist...He even rolls his notes like Don...Fantastic. This arrangement reminds me of the Les Brown arrangements of the 50's.. Les Brown Jr. has the Band in Branson and makes an annual tour of Florida in Jan.-Feb. each year. Still the great Band it always was!
What a great arrangement and tasty solo by Billy Hunt. I loved this solo so much I transcribed it. I'm looking for a copy of the solo trumpet part to this tune in order to include the chord changes. I'd really like to study what Billy did. If any of you want a copy, send me a message and I'll get it out to you when it's finished.
I was fortunate enough to play with Billy in the house band at Shangri-La many years ago. What a wonderful person and such a lyrical soloist. He's a gem!
Woody's 60s bands are all good until the very late 60s when he begins to try and 'go rock' and then..if that's your taste...whatever.
But he has a beautiful ballad version of WHO CAN I TURN TO on his Columbia LP of Broadway tunes. Just stunning sax section work and a gorgeous alto solo by Woody.
Billy Hunt's solo over the Four Brothers tenor sound is so tasteful and perfect for the setting (a lost art?), plus the seamless way he navigated over the "changes" in the modulation and set up the "shout" chorus is reminiscent of how Don Fagerquist did those same things with Gene Krupa, Woody's "New Third Herd" and the Les Brown Band of Renown. I sure I am showing my age saying how much I miss hearing that kind of playing.
@murnien You can't get in the car and go see bands like this anymore. The next best thing is to aquire a good HI FI, record collection, and pretend like you are sitting in a Balboa Beach club, forty-four years ago. You are so right about the "Long Island Sound" as Getz called it. It is as hypnotic as the Miller reed sound decades earlier.
@murnien : i miss hearing guys your age tell me about seeing Krupa and Les Brown live. Fagerquist is only a legend for me, but every time is hear him, I shake my head. As for Billy Hunt, well, you nailed it.
This is a great arrangement by Nat Pierce. I just got this arrangement and played it with my big band on New Year's eve in Phoenix. The recording sound's great!!!
When I first saw this video on "The Classic Arts" channel 2 years ago (and since than purchased the DVD), this has become my favorite ballad number from the Herman book. I just love the sax voicings behind Billy Hunt's beautiful solo. Wow, what a great number!

AMAZING! Someone needs to put together a documentary on big band / swing era / big orchestras, etc. type music.

Go ahead, MURNIEN, show your age. And think how lucky you (and I) are to have been around to appreciate these musicians when THEY were around.
