I read your 17,again piece - very very well written, love the choice of words used.
Can I just say that.. that basically described my life when I was in high school?
totally spot on. :)
there aren't really any 'cliques' i guess (maybe it's a tad different in Canada lol) but I too was the same. I was well known mainly for sports and as a leader in school but was a floater between many groups of friends.
I'm 17, and currently in the process of reading your article. That bit about the student council activist just made me laugh, because I was one too and I was class president last year haha. I can pretty much relate to all of this article, as I am nowhere to be found on the social hierarchy because I'm kind of a floater between cliques haha.
But thanks for the article, Mary! And the one about gay culture too... that one helped me earn an A on my essay :D
hi maryb im only 16 but reading your article made me happy, times have changed and Im a very different person than you were in high school but i adore how i can still relate to you and look up to you. you are a lovely person and my day can be horrible but you still manage to put a smile on my face.
You mentioned facebook...where are you on there? lol. I tried to find you, but I failed.
I hope you're back to your creme filled, sprinkly doughnut self soon, Jess! (I'm assuming that's what a glazed doughnut would be when it's healthy? lol)
If you clicked on the story, you'd know my last name :) And if you guys do pal around on our social networks, give us a one sentence description when you send your add so we recognize your beautimous faces and accept!
Glazed doughnut!! That is just the sweetest analogy! Get well Jess! Read this article yesterday, I love the fact I always have to read your articles a couple of times to fully pick up whatcha layin down! Another fab article MaryB, which had me googling Dave Matthews quotes too (of which I am now a fan)! So double thanx :)
read the article, and i did the 3 sports year round till my senior year, thats when i starting going out with my gf, and doing illegal things. sports prolonged my bad behavior for a good amount of years. <3 basketball
but ... why is your user name called marybside? sounds a little like.. mary's little badonkadong side.. hahaha.. ok.. kidding! Hope your little lover gets well again.
The B's not for my backside, or some expression of booty for days :) It was a nickname first given to me by my Canadian pal in college. She was a DJ and called me Mary B-side, like the B-side of a cassette tape (remember those?) There's a main A-side of radio-ready tracks, and then the B-sides and rarities -- the offbeat nuggets!
Halfway through the article I find myself thinking "why was I never sporty? I should've been sporty! I'm not a real lesbian..." hahah... I guess my queerdom was more evident in my "sickeningly strong aversion to intercourse" and such. Great article, as usual :) thank you.
nice article Mary B, im 17 and could definitely relate. it made me think of a lot of kids in my school, my friends, and obviously myself. it even made me laugh a couple times =)
it was a nice way to start an early friday morning right before school.
Oh man that's exactly how I felt in high school. I thought I was just picky or asexual or SOMETHING. I didn't really put too much thought into it until college. But it turns out i'm probably just a big homo :O
just read the article and loved it! i related to that one alot. in fact at times i felt like i was reading an article about MY experience in high school. i'm looking forward to the next article (and video) already! :)
tell Jess i sent a quick prayer up for her, so she should be feelin better in no time! ;)
your teen years sound pretty darn good. i suck a sports but the one sport that i am half decent at (rugby, haha gay or wut?) i fail at with cheer. i play too many video games, get decent grades, walk to school, have no real rep to my name (good or bad), plan on going into industrial design, listen to indie music, forget things so often im practically disabled, play guitar, wear the same jeans, and have a hyperactive thyroid. pretty much my life.
i will reads your article with pleasure and get back to you when im done. i hope jess feels better soon, i myself have caught the h1n1 and it sucks being sick.
mary ur seriously one of the best writers ive ever read (and i read a lot =). great story, it actually reminds me a lot of my freshman and sophmore year. junior year i became aware & it just kinda all came together.
I decided that I like hearing you read the article while I follow along. Maybe that's a throwback to story time, but I think that hearing the author say the words the way they meant them to be said adds a great deal. But that being said, you write with some of the most vivid imagery I've encountered in articles, and that makes it an absolute joy to read. Thanks for sharing it with us :)
"Mary Buckheit made her journey to SDGLN from the preppy pastures of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Science degree from a Catholic college in New York. She has been working hard as a full-time journalist for ESPN,....Mary currently lives happily ever after in Hillcrest with her sweetheart, Jess. For the record, they have no cats."
thanks SO VERY MUCH for not just clicking but reading it, too. and you even read all the way to the very bottom. you, adri are a doll. i appreciate it.
Haha no problem. I had this phase throughout tenth grade when I wanted to be a journalist, and you remind me of how I aspired to write when I was in that phase.
besides the usually fantastic writing, it felt highly familiar. i know so many girls who live over-achieving, activity filled, athletic, blissful, blind existences, with no worries greater than what car to drive, or what boy to go after. & most of them won't grow up to realize that they're gay.
when i was little, everyone thought my high school years would be like that, myself included. but things don't always turn out the way we envisioned, i suppose. it's interesting.
glad to hear jess is feeling a bit better! i think i speak for everyone when i say that we miss seeing you every week...but i guess saving the world 1000words at a time can suffice as a legit excuse. hope to see you girls back old-school style soon!! much love xo
ps. read the article. love it. coulda ripped the same story right out of my yearbook, well except for the class prez part. i wanted to run but i had a sliiiight dislike for public speaking. yay for "asexual" over achievers!:)
Austen, Dickens, Shakespeare. All names one might rattle off when speaking of their favorite writer. I say nobody compares to Mary B. I tip my hat to you from good old connecticut. Keep up the great articles!
Update videos like this are alllll good so we know the happ's as to why you guys haven't posted in a while :) Definately hope Jess get's better soon! Hope you're having a good Nov 5th (it's fireworks time of year here and I graduate uni soon so hurrah! Just thought I'd share, LOL!)
here's to fireworks and graduation to your corner of the land. i'll pass on well wishes to jess, and we'll be back in action soon -- promise. thanks for watchin, darlin.
