Mah...!
Yes... I was already thinking it to have been too much good for my country! First... I heard Callas was here... Then, I found the recording and Kraus... and now Gobbi had escaped from me?!!? :-P
About the performance:
This is one of those 5*; yet, there's something missing. Impecable technique (with some hoarsy moments!! Oo''), lovely and well-fitting masculine voice, perfect diction... but something missing in the end, some unifying substance.
what kind of criticism is this supposed to be? Too soft? Gobbi sings with the love and tenderness of a father for the son he adores. I doubt you will get many votes for your 'best baritone'!
This is such a beautiful and simple composition, along with its compellingly sympathetic message - and then there is the superlative and wonderfully expressive rendering by Gobbi.....
If this really was in lisboa 1958, then was the conductor: Franco Ghione". But i think that`s a studio-produktion from Tito Gobbi. In lisboa produktion was Mario Sereni the Father Germont.

You should listen to the 1906 Tita Ruffo recording. It stands alone. Gobbi, however, is very fine indeed!

@LordMgls - If something is missing then maybe it needs more of your imagination to fill in? Just thinkin' .

@goldie0800 Probably. Sometimes I'm just being too hard with singers.
In this case, I just have a feeling that something is missing. That might be as well my imagination! LOL

Gobbi at his most accomplished. Wonderful phrasing. The best D Provenza - amongst all of the other great ones!

Wonderful, as usual... however I don't think Germont was a "Lord" :)
