Ironically, I think that root beer scene defines deep space nine, a show that wa never pro-federation. In fact, the federation looks even silly in light of the realities shown on the show. DS9 really is the greatest star trek ever :) And Garak rocks.
I think every time Garak got punched he got a bloody lip. Maybe Robinson himself insisted that in his fighting scenes there was damage showing that it wasn't all "clean."
The Lothario stuff, I wonder if that was with Xiyal? I always found that relationship fascinating because she was more aggressive than he. There was always the sense he tried to stand people he cared about off to protect them, or maybe that's just me.
Based on what I've seen, I get the feeling that Garak was more standoffish with Ziyal because he saw her as an innocent. Bashir had made a conscious decision to join the Federation knowing there would be risks involved, and Garak was willing to make him face that choice. But Ziyal was a victim of circumstances beyond her control, and Garak didn't want to make her situation any more dangerous than it needed to be, and part of that meant keeping her at arm's length. At least that's my theory.
I think they should print it somewhere on the convention ticket that whoever attends these conventions should come prepared with at least two really engaging questions or the convention host should at least provide a moderator who can ask the actors questions. What a waste of an opportunity to get to know your favorite actor ya know? The audience could ask him almost anything, and there they're talking about what Andy thinks about South American telenovelas. WTF?
And then it became one of the best scenes ever on DS9!
