  • how do you know how much food to store?

  • for everyone around indy check out indy preppers . org

  • nice video Thanks.

  • Most dried foods in #10 cans will keep about a year once they are opened. However, I have had some last longer than that. It depends on the type of food.

  • My quesiton is: After you open any of the 30 yr, 10# cans, how long does the food last after the can is opened?

Obvously no one can eat all that food in one can in thirty days?

  • @patriotusa200 I eat a lot of food! lol I'll eat the entire contents of a #10 can withing a few weeks...I'm a healthy and hungry boy. lol

  • @patriotusa200 When I open a #10 can of beans I pressure can the whole can .. but first I soak those beans overnight with a little baking soda!! It softens the old beans.. I promise anything you open will be used and quickly enough!

  • @patriotusa200 You probably..30 days. But if there are at least two people eating the contents, you'll go through a #10 will go quicker than 30 days.

  • I am a born again Christian... more and more Christians are storing food...who knows maybe we are doing this for those who are left behind after the rapture.

  • @RuthieTalk Could be...

  • I just went down to one of the Mormon store houses here in Indiana. I was impressed I have to say. I was afraid that they would go off about Joe Smith on wot not but much to my surprise they were the kindest people. I will admit that I have changed my perspective about them. The product, by the way, is grade A. I mean, we just tried some of the grains we bought and I will say that they taste so much better than the stuff I buy at China-Mart. Great Vid! This was of GREAT help. Thanks mormons

  • @TheReaganRevolution I've found the Mormons to be very kind and helpful as well. Thanks for the comment and I"m glad you enjoyed the video.

  • Thank you for this timely information. Food prices are definitely going up. Having food stored is going to be a better investment than the stock market I think.

  • @prepster411 Thanks for the comment and good point…storing food can certainly act as a hedge against inflation.

  • Just so you know, the prices are significantly higher online. Here are some examples: -Plastic lids $5 (10) online, $1 (10) at cannery -Starter $31 online, $22.20 for 6 at cannery -Red wheat $28 online, $21 for 6 at cannery -Rice $30.75 online, $24 for 6 at cannery -Oats $21.25 online, $15 for 6 at cannery -O2 absorbers $12 (100) online, $10 (100) at cannery -Pinto beans $40.75 online, $28.20 for 6 at cannery -Mylar bags $94 (250) online, $75 (250) at cannery

    You DO pay more online!

  • Thanks for the info Blackcat.

  • @wakeupsheople You're welcome.

  • Does it still last 30 yrs after you open the can? On one can eat a ton of food

    in a copule of days.

  • @patriotusa200 lol...after you open the can you'd want to consume within a reasonable amount of time.

  • @patriotusa200 After you open the can it is not going to last 30 years. It will last just like any other bean, rice, oats

dry product will. Of course if you keep the open can sealed with a plastic top and in a cool dry place it will be ok.

Once open one should eat the contents within a reasonable amount of time.

  • To add to my other post about the Bishops Storehouse: If you have one near you please go by there and check it out. You can buy more items than what is listed on the store.lds.org website. Not all of the Bishops Storehouse locations have a food storage center but if the one near you does, check it out and see for yourself. And yes, I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints.

  • @FredFlintStoneRox Thank you very much for your thoughtful comment and also the additional information.

  • The church also runs what is called "Bishops Storehouse". It is where one can go to the storehouse, purchase the foodstuff and or the cans, and supplies to can it yourself. The one near me also has a canner they loan so you package the food at your house. Some have the canner and a pouch sealer too. If you do not have a Bishops Storehouse near you, then order the food from the website.

  • Very Good Video. I am not LDS but they do the job correct. Wish more churches did the same!

  • @surfnfx I agree and thank you for the comment. I am a firm believer in learning from history...and no one knows more about food storage than the Mormons.

  • Excellent video. Thank you for the links and advice.

  • @isabstmr You are very welcome!

  • instead of bulk just buy normal foods, buy what you eat and eat what you buy..normal canned stuff will last years on a shelf, years beyond the expiration dates. flour, wheat, sugar..just break them down into smaller bags and vac seal them . store in a tote in a dark basement and it all lasts for years..pasta, soups , whatever. and you dont have food sitting around with no use. as you use some you replace it

  • @ihatesquirrel13 All good points.

  • Great info and video!!! I just ordered the family storage starter kit. Thanks a lot.

  • @Zbee167 You're very welcome...glad you enjoyed the video.

  • I was just looking at the prices on the website you listed. Are you aware that you can get 3 or 4 times as much stuff at the same price if you can it yourself?

  • @dendog21 Oh yeah, for sure…much cheaper if you can yourself. This would be for folks who prefer to buy prepackaged. If you live near an LDS cannery, you can get more variety and it’s cheaper as well. Thanks for the comment.

  • Its good to see other christians prepping. I started a year ago and thought i was one of the only christians that felt a need to prep. Its so good to know Im not alone and others see the need too. Im fortunate enough to have a LDS cannery in my town and get many of my long term storage items there. Thanks for you video.

  • @MsAnna4040 Thanks for the comment. For sure there ary many closet pereppers out there. I wish I had an LDS cannery nearby.

  • @MsAnna4040 what does it have to do with christians ? beleif in fantasies has nothing to do with preperations

  • @ihatesquirrel13 Obviously you are not a christian and dont believe as I do. That is your right, and I respect that. I wld never think of offending you or anyone else that thinks differernt than I do by insulting them or telling them they "believe in fantasies". I show respect towards other religions and non-religious people alike. Maybe you should do the same.

  • @MsAnna4040 if what i say offends you then that is your personal take. i didnt find it offensive. since there is no proof of what you speak of. there is plenty of actual proof to disprove it though. so in my opinion calling it fantasy or fictional is not offensive in any way shape or form. maybe you shouldnt tell others what to do

  • @ihatesquirrel13 I havent told anyone what to do. I SUGGESTED that you show a little tolerance, kindness and manners and dont criticize others for their beliefs. Im secure enough in my own beliefs that i dont need to go around criticizing others to validate what i believe. If you believe God is a fairy tale, so be it. I believe thats ur right and I dont criticize u for it. I wish u wld give me the same respect.

  • @whatiftheyareright No problem, glad you found it useful.

  • If you have an LDS cannery near you, your options open up a ton on purchasable items. Look up LDS cannery price list for the full list of what you can get at the cannery itself. It is a great resource.

  • @jplerwill Excellent idea...thanks.

  • @jplerwill Excellent idea...thanks.

  • Southernprepper1 just made a similar video about the LDS canning. He shows a 220 page preperation book that can be downloaded for free and is extremely full of great info.

  • When storing flour, Freeze it for 24 hours first, it will kill all bug larvee.

  • @skywriter1962 When I was a boy, my mother swore by putting a bay leaf or two in with the flour to keep the weavels at bay.

  • @BlackCatSaloon Yes, my mom did that too, it was later in her life that she found out that you should freeze it first to get rid of any larvee, and the Bay leaf help's keep from any new infestation, Thanks for that I had forgotten about the Bay Leaf!

  • You did a much better than 'halfway decent' job. You did a great job explaining all of this. I really liked the flickering lamp. Your video was well done.

  • @katzcradul Thank you for your very kind comment. It's comments like these that keep me producing videos.

  • thanks for the link. been meaning to go to the cannery and this is a great site.

  • @gilyardk Thanks for the comment.

  • Absolutely its worth it to visit a local cannery if you are near one. You can can your own carrots, onions ptatoes, milk, and that will round out your basics a bit more, The people were really great, there was no religious overtone other than once they started the canning session with a prayer. Its hard to can up a years supply of wheat or something but you can buy your stuff in bulk bags and then put it in buckets at home, thats even cheaper.

  • @preparedchipmunk I agree. My experience with the Mormons has always been positive.

  • @preparedchipmunk Excellent idea...thanks for the comment.

  • Thanks for sharing this. LDS as only recently received lots of exposure lately, and it's a great resource. For those worry about it, they don't bug you with they're beliefs if you go to a center to can.

    Take advantage while you can.

  • @IronRangeSurvival Thanks for the comment. I agree...if you have a cannery nearby, it's worth a visit.

  • I just ordered a starter kit. Thanks for the tip man.

  • @amusingisthedawn You're welcome. Glad to help out.

  • @amusingisthedawn You're welcome. Glad to help out.

  • awesome video!

  • @Krock45bullet Thank you so much for the comment!

  • Thanks, I knew about the LDS Store and had planned to make an order... your video reminded me and I just made a purchase.

  • ROFL, mail the finances booklet to the fed.

  • @davethevanman Yeah, I had to giggle a little on this too...we're expected to pay our bills, why does the Federal Government get a free pass? Their answer is to print money.

  • Hey, you're doing a great job. Thanks for the info. Can't beat that price.

  • @aintgonnaworrynomore Thank you for the comment.

  • Dude......this is a GREAT deal. If I didn't already have a large supply I would for sure buy from here. I still might in fact. My advice would be to buy a few more cases while you can. Eveyone else is charging twice as much as these guys.

  • @MrB0TT Amended, just bought a starter case. My wife will probably kill me...

  • @MrB0TT Ha! Hope you don't get into too much trouble! If so, just blame me. :-)

  • @MrB0TT Thanks for the comment! For sure, they seem to offer the best price for the staples.
